There's a whole lot of cuteness going on over here!
Despite Momma being dumped and her finding a shed to have her babies under in 90+ degree weather, they are all doing good. They won't be ready for adoption until the first week of October. They are a Pyrenees Mix around 8-10 weeks. Adoption fee is $100 and that includes $50 toward the spay/neuter at a later scheduled date. 1st pic was taken 3 was ago.

Look in the comments for a short video of Duncan on his way out, oblivious to us silly Volunteers, so much that he never even looked back! WTG D - Man. Thanks for showing everyone how it's done! 😁 (Thank you to you too adopters!!)

Every time rescue is asked to take an owner surrender- we have to somehow make room on our little raft for that dog. When an owner says stuff like “I don’t have time to give them the best life” or “I have to move” or “they have too much anxiety” it really falls flat because that means if we bring them on the raft, another dog out there in the freezing water gets to die.
Every day in rescue we adjudicate life and death by gate keeping who can get on the boat.
Rescues and shelters are the tiny rescue boats.
The ship is our community at large.
The iceberg is comprised of puppy mills, careless owners, backyard breeders, and a$$hats who won’t spay/neuter.
* Copied and reshared *
Let us not forget all the homeless animals on the streets trying to survive until they either die or rescued.

This is Nala. Mariah’s housemate. We can’t express enough that this is unacceptable. No animal deserves to be starved. There are too many caring people that would be willing to help with dog food. Ask your neighbors, ask your pastor, ask someone you know who is a dog lover. Ask, just ask. Please call the shelter if you or you know of a person that needs help with dog food. We can’t support your dog, but we can certainly help you with enough food for a couple of days until you can get something figured out. And please, take in consideration all aspects of what it takes to have a dog before you decide to get one. With most dogs you are looking at a minimum 7 - 15 year commitment.

If you are having trouble caring for your pets especially by way of food, please reach out to someone or a shelter, we will help when able too. . This should never happen.
Due to circumstances the owner trusted someone to take care of her pet and needless to say, that didn’t happen. The picture on the left is Mariah nice and healthy in 2022 and on the right is her today. She is completely emaciated, and back with us at the shelter.
If you need help, please ask.
(Mariah brought her housemate Nala along with her who is in just as bad of shape as she is. )

This little guy is Duncan. He is a 9 year old senior. He is very sweet! A total love bug. His owner has passed away so he has found his way here. We believe he is a sh*tzu mix. He wants to be back in a home where he can be happy and be loved.

Today we had Troop 380 from Ft. Smith, Crew 1111 from Ft. Smith and Troop 30 from Poteau at the shelter. They painted all of our kennels, put dirt down in the holes the dogs have dug. What a superior group of kids. They always do a fantastic job and they actually enjoy it and they have a fun time doing it. The Volunteers and shelter animals want to say THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR ALL OF YOUR HARD WORK AND FOR GIVING BACK TO OUR COMMUNITY. Such a fantastic group of kiddos!

We brought in this momma dog and her 9 puppies. They were born under a shed and never seen the inside until yesterday. Unfortunately momma has a sister with 6 puppies that still need help but at least they are all in foster care for now. With 15 puppies between both Mommas, that’s going to take a lot of Puppy Chow. If you can spare a bag or two please drop them off during business hours or you can call and leave a message and someone can pick it up. You can also purchase through Walmart just put PVHS as the pick up person and then let us know. Thank you so much. Donations, volunteers and saving lives is what makes our world go round. đŸ„°đŸ„°

Hilda has returned! But now she is more ready than ever to find a new forever home. Hilda will need time to decompress once she gets her new place with her new people. She is very active and is ready to go at a moments notice. She currently hangs out with the female big dogs during the day and shares the office area at night with Momma Dog (a lab). Definitely enjoys being a lap dog and cuddling. Come by and see her then get your application in!!

This is Lola. She was having a hard time at the shelter because of the heat. She needed to be somewhere cooler and in Foster care instead of another rescue. So we did just that. Yesterday I took her to a rendezvous point where she was picked up by a transfer partner and 12 hours later here she is with her new foster parents. Just look at her face. I think she is very happy with our decision to move her. After all, everything we do at PVHS, we do for the love of dogs (and cats).

If this isn’t enough to inspire our community we don’t know what is. Eagle Scout Troops 380 G & 380 B from Ft. Smith, Arkansas and our very own Troop 30 from Poteau came and volunteered their time, to come clean, paint, make some minor repairs all for the sake of our shelter dogs. It’s been a wonderful Saturday at PVHS. The appreciation we feel is immense. Thank you Troops. You are today’s rock stars too.

This Awesome little girl who is already thinking about and doing things to make a difference in this world started with us. Baya and her Mom Jessica came by the shelter today so she could share her love and compassion for humanity with our shelter animals. WTG Mom and Baya. You are today’s rockstars. The animals thank you from the bottom of their paws. Please share the kindness.

This is Everett. He is just turning 7 weeks old so he'e not quite ready to go to a home yet. He has 8 other siblings that will need safe loving homes also. They have been living outside since birth. They are very friendly, loving and curious. As far as we know they are a lab/heeler mix. More Information and pics on his siblings will be posted in the next week or so.

This is Miley, she's a fun loving, 8 month old, schnauzer mix. She was returned to us at no fault of her own. Miley got bigger than the previous owner thought she would get. She gets along great with everyone, but she tends to jump up on people, when she gets excited. Like most pups! Go to our website at Poteaupets.org and fill out an adoption application or call at 918-649-0986 for a meet & greet.

Interested in Adoption? Adopted Pets are The Best!

Poteau Valley Humane Society has been helping rescued animals find permanent, loving homes since 1995! Each of our rescues are worked with, socialized and oftentimes, leash and house-trained. A small base of Volunteers work each day to ensure that you adopt a healthy, happy animal! We take pride in maintaining a clean, inviting shelter in which you can visit, stay awhile, and, perhaps, choose your new best “furry” friend be it puppy, adult dog, cat or kitten. We do have an application process should you see a rescue which you would like to give a permanent, loving home. There are two ways to make application: (1) ONLINE adoption Form or visit the shelter by APPT.

To access the ONLINE ADOPTION FORM, please go to poteaupets.org and click on the ADOPTION LINK. The LOBBY is closed to visitors during this time; however, we are welcoming visitors by appt. Please call 918-649-0986 between hrs. of 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. Monday thru Fri. or Sat. from 10 a.m. - Noon to SCHEDULE an Appt. Adoption fees range: $100 for adult dogs; $50 for adult cats; $50 for puppies; $25 for kittens (adopter will be asked to sign a binding agreement to have the puppy or kitten spayed or neutered on a timely basis and follow up is done; )

The PVHS website poteaupets.org is currently undergoing major changes to bring it up to date, but you can access it for the ADOPTION form and to see posts of some of the rescues currently available. Should you have questions about adoption, etc., please call 918-649-0986 or email [email protected] We also have News and updates posted to our facebook.com/poteauvalley.pets If you are considering adoption, we invite you to check out the many healthy, wonderful rescues that are available at Poteau Valley Humane Society!!
