Sadly, this heartbroken family lost their beautiful 7 year old Border Collie named Kindle on Wednesday when she suffocated in a chip bag. Wendy Jordan, a professional dog trainer, says, "I can’t write now. It’s too raw. I have warned people for years about Pet Suffocation. I’m a dog trainer/business owner by profession. And today, because I left a chip bag on a table, in an area I thought the dogs didn't have access to but knew they sometimes could get through, my best dog of my pack is gone. She opened the gate to the deck, went up the steps, got the chip bag, took it down the steps, even spilling some of the chips, and then somehow accessed the inside and suffocated. She was right beside my gate where she is used to entering and exiting the yard. I’m devastated. I may never buy a bag of chips again. I used to worry about this when my kids were young, and I warned my kids when they left home with their dogs, and yet one freak accident, and I’m the one it happens to."

Even though someone may already know about pet suffocation and take all safety precautions, accidents can still happen. We can only do our best. Kindle was a very determined pup. Her story will help save other pets from this happening to them. Please help us spread awareness. Thank you.

FIRST AID FRIDAY!

Water intoxication in dogs is fortunately rare but it does occur. If left untreated or recognized too late, it can be fatal.

It is most commonly reported in dogs that love to be and play in the water. Interestingly, it can also occur in athletes who consume excessive amounts of water or sport drinks and is termed exercise-associated hyponatremia. Hyponatremia means a decrease in the sodium content in the blood.

Most recently, a fatal case was reported in Alberni Valley news - a border collie playing in a wading pool rapidly developed signs of water toxicity. These signs came on rapidly and progressed from agitation, vomiting to coma.

These cases typically occur with dogs who have an affinity for water (playing in lakes, wading pools, retrieving objects in the water or drinking from a hose).

Although not all cases are fatal, by the time more severe signs are recognized (coma), only prompt diagnosis and treatment can help.

There are multiple factors and the cause is not completely understood but, in some individuals this excessive water intake dilutes blood electrolytes which can lead to brain swelling and coma.

Prevention is KEY:
An excellent article published by the American Kennel Club summarizes the key points:

Because water intoxication is irreversible in advanced cases, prevention is key. Take note of your dog’s swimming style. If he tends to splash, hold his head low in the water and his mouth open — even slightly — he is at greater risk for water intoxication. Don’t allow your dog to swim or retrieve in water unchecked and take frequent rest breaks. In between swimming sessions, give your dog plenty of opportunities to relieve himself, which helps remove excess fluid.
If your dog is a fetcher, avoid tennis balls and round-shaped toss toys, opting instead for a flatter object, which allows him to better close his mouth around it. Don’t allow him to dive for objects and ditto for biting at the high-pressure stream from a hose.

Trustworthy dog boarding in Merrit or Kamloops?
My dog sitter canceled due to a family emergency. I need to be in Kamloops tomorrow at 10am-~5pm for a Celebration of Life, BCAS Honour Guard. My original plan was to go this evening and return Friday morning. If I can find a good place for my girls, with room, I’ll make whatever I can work. Ideas?

Has anyone moved recently? Have you updated your address with the pet registry? It’s common for pets to get restless when moving to a new home and slip away, into new territory and be lost. Their microchip with your outdated contact info and address is then useless if someone else finds your dog.

I picked up a couple of hoofs for the girls today. I didn’t think it was a first for JudiQ but….🤣

DohG does well in the snow. JudiQ loves it but her coat causes issue, snowballs galore. After the first outing a warm shower thawed her out. Before giving it a go again I put her in her post op onesie (tail flap out of the way) and managed to get two boots one the rear paws. Much better. Hopefully next time she’ll tolerate four boots.

As soon as I hit record DohG stopped snoring lol. I’ve never had a dog who dreams so much. Merry Christmas all, may your day be as chill.

For those who don’t know, I’m fostering two bunnies for the Chilliwack SPCA. They’ve been in pens I built in the garage which has been working with a heating lamp and at times a small space heater but temps are going down to-15C before wind chill the next few nights. So, I now have a bunny condo in my kitchen using dog crates. The boys, Wesley and Zayn will spend the nights here this week. Both boys are around 1yr old, very calm. Wesley is the more outgoing but both are very good natured, as long as they don’t share the same space. 😂 Then boys will be boys. Neither has ever tried to nip me at all, even in the beginning. I sure hope they find forever homes soon, they deserve more than I can give them, but I’ll do what I can.
