Just finished a pet sitting job. Got a call from the client stating her dog has been missing me since I left yesterday.

When I’m at a clients house it’s all about the pets. They want to play? Let’s play! They want to walk? Let’s walk! They want to just hang out cause it’s a rainy day? Let’s cuddle and be lazy!

That call made my day.

Pet sitting can be tough. I have been second guessing continuing to do it. Until this thought hit me this morning. This is a painting a client painted for me as a gift. I have pet sat for them for years, know their dogs very well. The dog in the middle passed away Friday.

I was in charge of pet sitting all last week for them while they were away on thanksgiving vacation. Charlie was fine thanksgiving morning and evening. He ate his dinner went outside. Then at around 7pm noticed he just didn’t seem right. Gave all 3 of them a treat before bed. Awoke the next morning to see Charlie had not eaten his, but he had moved away from it. Since he is the only one that doesn’t get crated at night he is always first to go out. I opened the door to back yard. He didn’t budge. Tried coaxing him outside nope. The only thing he was able to move was his head and wagging his tail. I immediately sounded the alarm to the owner at 6 something in the morning.

I even sent them videos of him throughout the day. They got on the road sooner than they had planned. Made it back just in time to say their goodbyes. They took him to emergency vet once they got back and vet said something ruptured in his stomach and there was nothing anyone could of done.

So I thought about not pet sitting anymore. But then I said Charlie spent his final day not locked in a cage in an unfamiliar place. He spent his final day at home with not his family, but someone that loved him just as much. If he wasn’t home his family would of gotten a call the next day stating he had passed. Being that boarding your pets you aren’t aloud to pick them up after hours. So he was home and in his last few minutes his family was with him to say their goodbye.

Pets do better when they are in their own home. It’s familiar. So they won’t stress because you have gone away. Taking a vacation? Business trip? Need a trusted sitter?

Over night pet sitting with Mr. Bean. We had a fun day. The other two dogs mind the electric fence. Mr. Bean however pays it no mind. So he gets leash walked. He doesn’t like being leash walked, so slipped out of his collar and off he went. Luckily it’s a area with nothing but fields. He goes and visits the cows sometimes and maybe a few neighbors. Always returns and sleeps the rest of the day and most of the night!
