Here at Puppies Unleashed we take health clearances very seriously and advocate for all breeders to do the same regardless of what breed of dog they breed. We have used OFA and the CHIC program almost exclusively for Labrador specific tests and documentation.

Excellent perspective, quick read. We offer limited quantity of high quality food to our girls - being Labradors they eat efficiently - and we monitor their general health and weight routinely.

Free choice feeding is definitely the easiest option for owners — just fill up the bowl and top it off whenever you notice it getting low. Unfortunately, "easy for owners" and "good for pets" are frequently at odds with one another. Dogs that are free fed are at a high risk for becoming overweight...

It’s the season to be hyper-aware of your dogs environmental exposure.
Although our Labrador girls have water, fans and shade, we use 90 degrees as a cutoff for our crew to come inside to the Air Conditioning.
We have also seen a popular threshold to contemplate of temperature + humidity 150 or higher means bring your dogs inside to cool down.
Clearly, different breeds and routine living conditions have different tolerances. Stay cool 😎 🐶🐾🐾

All the intentionality of picking breeding healthy, purebred dogs to breed and then carefully selecting permanent homes for pups takes a huge effort by itself. This on top of the commitment to mom and pups for 8 weeks all day, every day… it’s fabulous but exhausting…

When a breeder tells you they socialize their puppies, ask how and when. Being an informed consumer is essential in today’s market.

WHY is it so important to find a reputable & responsible breeder?? Most people would rather get a $500 labrador than a $1800 labrador. The most common reason? "We don't need a show/sport dog, we just want a nice family pet!"

1- Good breeders breed dogs with good body structure.
A dog with poor structure is at a much greater risk for injury, such as a torn ÄCL. The surgery for a torn ACL is $2.500, minimum.

2- Good breeders health test.
Healthy dogs live longer. Degenerative Myelopathy is a genetic, incurable disease that can remain dormant for generations. Dogs with DM inevitably must be euthanized.
Good breeders have dogs with OFA certified hips and elbows.
Hip dysplasia is becoming increasingly common. The cost of a total canine hip replacement is about $1,700, and your dog will have to live a life of special diets, physical therapy, and joint supplements.

3- Good breeders breed dogs with good temperaments.
Contrary to popular belief, your dog's personality is not all about "how you raise him." Genetics play a huge factor as well. Exceptionally well-bred dogs will have fewer issues with things like, potty training, guarding food, getting along with other dogs, and getting along with kids.

4- Good breeders start training early.
Early training, socialization, and exposure can give you a puppy that is already mostly potty trained, leash trained, crate trained, and more!
Taking the time to search for a responsible breeder will save your sanity, your wallet, AND your heart.

We are picky about who we select to adopt our puppies because not all homes are a good fit.

Seriously, we start car rides with the pups early on so they can feel the movement and noises of the vehicle. Their last trip is to the vet for the their go home check!

I am a puppy raised by a responsible breeder.
My parents were health tested to ensure that I had a chance at the happiest, healthiest life possible.
I was socialized so that I would be well-adjusted and confident in the real world.
My breeder went through a rigorous application process in order to carefully select a loving and responsible home for me.
I grew up in a household that set me up with a great foundation so that I could go out and be a wonderful companion and representative of my breed.

Nice little infographic with good points. We do belong to the Labrador Retreiver Club and find it to be very useful. Additionally, we are very careful with decisions about homes for our puppies and carefully consider every pup’s temperament.

Preparing puppies for the real world is an essential part of our curriculum. Helping them learn to be calm and accepting of human hands touching them all over allows for better examinations by you and your veterinary team.
