I try to avoid rocking the boat in the dog world. But, there has been a serious uptick of dog training franchises following the same business model and training requirements to become a professional dog trainer. This post is not to knock franchises, it's about transparency. Some have really great trainers working for them. When I started training dogs over 16 years ago, you really had to know your stuff. Be well educated, well rounded in your abilities, know what you were looking at when dealing with behavior modification, and you wouldn't dream of taking on a behavior modification if you couldn't actually fix the issue. You'd apprentice with successful trainers for months on end, or go to school for long stents. I've redacted the company in their hiring ad, as this is not a personal attack on them. It's to highlight the business model. This is nationwide (many found in RDU) that only require 3 weeks of training to be considered a dog trainer. Which would technically make most of our clients certified dog trainers, lol. As an owner, please ask questions!! Dog training companies do not need to be transparent about their staffs education on training tools, animal husbandry, or animal psychology. -Ask who will your dog be working with. -Ask what their certifications are and through who. -Ask what their experience is in the issues your dog is facing, or the training tools they will be using. -Ask for an in person consultation before sending your dog away to training. -Ask for references from recent clients who have worked with the trainer. If you've asked the company all these questions and have a good feeling, then yes, absolutely move forward with the training. Not all training is considered equal (franchise or small business). Since covid, the amount of dogs that have come to us to be re-trained, or "fixed" after training tools or training methodologies where used incorrectly, has been staggering. YOUR DOG HATES THE CRATE. CAN IT BE FIXED? Addresing crate training after a dog has had a negative experience in a kennel, or was never properly trained in one is work. It is not impossible to change your dogs attitude towards being kenneled, as long as you understand: 1. What the trigger for the dog is. 2. How to keep from pushing them over threshold (forcing a step they are not ready for). 3. How to remain patient during the training process. Sweet Chance (dog in video) was great in a crate. Until one day he wasn't. He had to be moved to an impact crate because nothing was keeping him in, and his owner worried about his safety. Digging at the kennel, chewing on the kennel, barking, and refusing to enter the kennel on his own, where all things he was struggling with. Crate training is not a quick fix and will take time. Luckily, he has an owner dedicated to his wellbeing. Here is an overview of the jumpstart we've created for the owner: First, we made the crate a game. Not an obligation. We allowed the dog to enter and leave at their pace. Along with showing Chance different kennel types. Second, once he felt comfortable, we started to shape staying in longer. We did this by repetitive treat offerings. He was allowed to leave any time he wished. Third, was getting him comfortable with the door being shut and him still having a positive response to it. Part of this was expecting him to self regulate (stay calm) if he'd like to come back out. Think your dog could use some help? Mr. Winston! Where we started and where he's at now. Winston is your typical hound, sweet, but... very opinionated, loves the sound of his own voice, and likes to do things on his terms. Part of why he is with us is that he'd get overstimualted by the sight of other dogs, making it hard for his owner to walk him or to get him to refocus on her. Probably the cutest thing on the internet right now! Seeing children thrive with their dogs is at the top of the list for favorite things ever. We all remember our childhood dogs. When you're little, shy and nervous. Part of Dolly's issues at home is that she will not come when called. So we're keeping it super low-key for Miss Dolly to help her gain trust in us while learning behaviors. Shy dogs need things to be on their terms. This doesn't mean we ignore poor behavior. Mr. Mando! He was found by a rescue running the streets with a friend. Who knows what Mandos' back story is. He is a few years old, blind in one eye and reactive/aggressive towards people and dogs. He would have happily bit me when we first met. But, once he trusts you, he is incredibly sweet. He's with us to learn neutrality to people and dogs. Luke was attacked by a dog and is now dog aggressive/reactive. Which was making it extremely difficult for his owner to walk him. We are working on threshold and disengagement games to bring back his confidence. Showing him not every dog is going to get into his personal space and that he is safe. That staying calm will make the dogs go away, too. You can't force a fear based response out of a dog. The only way to get neutrality is by building the dogs' confidence around their triggers. Eventually, I'll ask for a real heel position. And eventually, we'll work on dogs in closer proximity. But the pace is really up to the dog. www.CanineTrainingCo.com I have a new puppy, now what? What's not to love about a group class with nothing but puppies! Socialization, training & exposure. Everything your dog needs to be well rounded, right? Not necessarily. Here's why holding off on a group class will help you more in the long run: 1. Picture taking a child to Disneyland and telling them they can only do homework. 😬 There's no chance they'll be able to focus or retain any information. This is what happens to your puppy when you place them in a high commotion situation and expect them to focus and learn. It's simply too much stimulation for their brains to successfully task. 2. Puppies are awful at generalizing behaviors. This means, just because they learn something one place, doesn't mean they understand to offer the same behavior somewhere else. And let's face it, we struggle with puppies at home. Crate training, potty training, nipping, and pushy behaviors with children. 3. Dogs under 16 weeks really shouldn't be in places with heavy dog traffic. Puppies should be fully vaccinated before heading to pet stores, dog training facilities, and dog parks/daycares. Parvo can be deadly. You can start training your puppy as young as 8 weeks old. And you should start as soon as they arrive home. But you need to set them (and yourself) up for success. So what are group classes great for? Building on focus once your dog has an understanding of the behaviors you're asking for. The video above is student Rex working on impulse control with his child. Rex had a bad habit of nipping at and being pushy when his kid was trying to play on the floor. Which is totally normal for a puppy to want to do when there's movement and excitement. But not ideal, or enjoyable, for the human at the other end. Unfortunately, situations like this are really difficult to replicate at a group class.
