Stolen / missing pets are too important to let battery power be a limiting factor in us being able to help locate & return them home where they belong… So today I made a large investment in the Honda EU2200i gasoline powered generator… This portable power solution will keep our all weather, any condition DJI Matrice M30T up in the sky hunting for as long as needed to complete our search missions… It wasn’t the cheapest option, but Honda has a bulletproof reputation 🚁📸🌳🐶🐕🐈‍⬛❤️‍🩹

**Can a thermal drone effectively track a lost pet in dense, leaf-covered wooded areas?**

We frequently receive this inquiry, especially during the time of year when trees are in full leaf. To address this, we invite you to watch the accompanying video for a demonstration.

In short, the answer is YES, but the reality is more nuanced. While it is challenging, it is indeed possible and we have successfully done it on numerous occasions. Effective tracking in such environments requires slower flight, repeated searches of the same area, keen observation, and proficiency with the drone technology being used.

Certain conditions can make tracking easier, such as when the pet is moving rather than stationary. A stationary animal might be obscured by multiple layers of canopy and could be missed unless viewed from various angles. Conversely, moving animals tend to catch the eye more readily and find more openings in the foliage than stationary ones.

In the example shown below, I successfully tracked a moving dog through dense canopy and even located it after it stopped moving. This demonstrates that with the right pilot and favorable conditions, tracking through dense cover is achievable.

It's important to note that the chances of missing an animal under heavy canopy are higher, but with careful flying and refined search techniques, a skilled pilot can significantly reduce the risk and increase the likelihood of a successful rescue.

Amigo the less than 1 year old Retriever is home safe !! Early last night I was contacted by some concerned folks about Amigo, breaking his collar yesterday afternoon and becoming lost after he ran into the woods after a UPS truck beeped it’s horn from close by scaring Amigo… After not being able to found overnight, I was requested to help search for Amigo with the thermal drone… It rained much of last night, as well as today and I made arrangements to meet the owner at approximately 11:30 am on General Leroy Manor Road in the Town of Morrisonville, NY… After getting some details from Brian, I wasted no time launching Maverick up into the rainy sky to get on the search. In the first 2.5 hrs of searching, I located numerous deer, birds in nests, 3 porcupines and a dead raccoon carcass, but no signs of Amigo… Then while expanding my search of a dense swamp area Maverick spotted a lone heat signature deep in the swamp… I clicked over to my color zoom camera and positively identified Amigo, who was bedded in the swamp, licking his paws… I GPS’s marked Amigo, notified Brian and we made a game plan for rescuing Amigo… Due to a local farming having several cows in the vicinity with a few aggressive bulls, it took us about 20 minutes to get Brian and a farm employee into the swamp and near Amigo… As I was trying to relocate Amigo for the rescue I noticed he was no longer at the GPS pin… It had briefly stopped raining during this time and Amigo got up out of his bed and began moving again… With Maverick overheard, Brian and the farm employee navigated towards the drone and got to within eye sight of Amigo on a narrow wooded path… Despite Brian’s best calling efforts and with food dish in hand, Amigo bolted upon seeing them further into the swamp… I spent the next 30 minutes trying to relocate Amigo while the men stayed put in the area… During the time frame I was trying to re-spot Amigo, Amigo circled back close to the men and Brian moved out into the open path and got low… Amigo spotted Brian and very cautiously, slowly approached him… Brian was able to entice Amigo the last few feet to him with his food dish and some cheese in a noisy wrapper he brought in with him… While flying, Brian called me and said “I got him”… I was elated, let out a loud “Yes” and landed Maverick and awaited the arrival of the men and Amigo back at the road… About 10 minutes later the 3 of them came back out to the road with Brian carrying a very tired Amigo who had endured a lot of cold rain overnight and throughout today… We all celebrated and high fived the successful end to this search & rescue mission… On the map, the pink outlined area is the terrain Maverick searched during the mission, with the orange dot being the location Amigo went missing… The blue diamond is where Maverick spotted Amigo bedded in the swamp 🚁📸🌲🐕❤️‍🩹
