CONSULTATIONS STARTING SEPTEMBER 2024 AT LOCAL VETERINARY HOSPITALS

MVN HOSPITAL DOORS OPENING EARLY 2025 Minnesota Veterinary Neurology has been established to provide easy access to superior care for the small animal neurologic patients in Minnesota and the surroundi

ng area. MVN will be the first and only neurology specific specialty hospital in Minnesota. Background:
Dr. Carpentier graduated from Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine in 2011. Following veterinary school, she completed a rotating internship in Connecticut at VCA Veterinary Referral and Emergency Center. She then completed a one-year post doctoral fellowship in the Comparative Neurology Program at the University of Missouri College of Veterinary Medicine. Dr. Carpentier stayed in Missouri to pursue a three-year neurology/neurosurgery residency that was jointly performed at The University of Missouri College of Veterinary Medicine and Veterinary Specialty Services in St. At the completion of her residency, Dr. Carpentier received the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine Resident Research Award for her work on 3D Magnetic Resonance Imaging of the Dog Spine in Hansen Type I Intervertebral Disk Disease. Dr. Carpentier has been practicing in the Twin Cities for 7 years. She enjoys all aspects of neurology, from the medical side of managing an epileptic patient to improving and maximize their quality of life, to the surgical side assisting a patient to be able to walk again and live a pain free life. Dr. Carpentier also brings the experience from the pet owners side, having to manage her own dogs with epilepsy, atlantoaxial luxation, and intervertebral disk disease (yes she takes her work home with her even when she tries not to!). Dr. Carpentier enjoys educating fellow veterinarians through her work as a neurology consultant for VETGirl and speaking across the country providing continuing education opportunities for the veterinary community.

As the warmer weather approaches (hopefully!), we want you to be aware of a condition that can commonly affect our kitty friends called Feline Ischemic Encephalopathy. This is a condition caused by the organism Cuterebra, which is a bot fly. The larvae of this organism can enter the nose of kitties and travel to the brain. Most commonly, cats will present with vestibular (vertigo) signs and have a history of sneezing a couple weeks prior. As you can imagine, as the organism travels through the brain it makes the brain a little angry (to say the least), and if that isn’t enough it causes the vessels in the brain to spasm causing areas of decreased blood flow in the brain. Luckily, because cats are cats and there isn’t anything they can’t do, they can do excellent with treatment.

If your feline friend acutely develops vestibular signs, likes to spend time outside, and was sneezing a couple weeks prior to getting dizzy, be sure to remember this condition and have them evaluated by a veterinarian or a veterinary neurologist. And don't forget, we are always here if you need us even if our doors aren't open yet!

Below is a MRI of the tract of a larvae as it made its way through the brain of a kitty. The tract is circled in red and can be seen as two white lines.

For this weeks Neuronavigating Neurology with MVN, we are giving a shout out to all of my small but mighty pups! This topic is near and dear to my heart due to a special little dog that won his way into my heart (even if he has no manners!)

Topic 5: Atlantoaxial subluxation.

Variants in CLCN1 and PDE4C Associated with Muscle Hypertrophy, Dysphagia, and Gait Abnormalities in Young French Bulldogs.

G. Diane Shelton, James R. Michelson, Steven G. Friedenberg, Jonah N. Cullen, Karina Graham, Missy C. Carpentier, Ling T. Guo and Katie M. Minor

When the French Bulldog overtook the labrador as the top purebred dog breed in America, it really was no surprise to those of us in veterinary medicine. They definitely are the most common breed that I treat as a neurologist, easily over-taking the dachshund in regards to the number of neurosurgeries that they require. And I get it, their loving personalities and cute faces win everyone over (including myself), but as they become more popular so does the recognition for all of their health concerns. As the French Bulldog becomes more popular, we need to make sure that we are paying attention to new health concerns that they bring to the table. One such concern that I most recently encountered was the hypertrophy (enlarged) muscles that many of these dogs have that truly inhibit their movement. As such, I looked deeper into the problem and it turns out so were some of my colleagues. Through the brilliant mind of Dr. Diane Shelton and others, identification of a genetic variant in Frenchie’s has been identified that causes their muscle hypertrophy, dysphagia and gait abnormalities. This information is vital so we are able to hopefully breed out this variant to help our Frenchie’s live a more comfortable life. Stay tuned for more information!

Now that we have had some time to unwind, we want to say a sincere thank you to everyone that took the time to come meet us at MVMA. We were truly touched by the overwhelming support and excitement for MVN being brought to the veterinary community. From TA’s to CVT’s to students to veterinarians to industry representatives, thank you for your positive energy and believing in our dream. One of the kindest comments we received at the meeting was being told that our energy was unlike anyone else’s, and it was uplifting to see in veterinary medicine. We believe in building a supportive and encouraging hospital, allowing everyone to be at their best which will allow us to provide unprecedented care for our patients. Thank you again.

Now, there is a much needed discussion on our game Can You Tap This? I had no idea it was going to be so popular! We promise to bring it back and get an abundance of swag. Your next opportunity to play will be at the ACVIM Forum June 6-8 in Minneapolis! More details to come.

Neuronavigating Neurology with MVN
Topic 3: IVDD

This will be a two-part series, focusing on intervertebral disk disease and how it can affect our pets. By far, the number 1 reason that a pet will need neurosurgery is due to an intervertebral disk extrusion or protrusion that is causing them either severe pain or paralysis. But what I also want clients to know is that there are many pets out there diagnosed with IVDD (whether it is incidentally off of radiographs or advanced imaging such as MRI) and it may never affect them clinically.
