This page is dedicated to Skylar, a 9 week old kitten with a esophageal stricture that may have been caused by an antibiotic given at a shelter.

Skylar was brought in as a stray to a local kill shelter on 10/16/14, she didn't have a name, just a number. She had a upper respiratory infection & was put on clindamycin at the shelter. Such caustic drugs like clindamycin can literally burn the esophagus if it gets stuck, like it did with Skylar which may or may not have caused her esophageal stricture. I got her home with me on Sunday- 10/26/14

, she was a bag of bones. The sweetest bag of bones & I knew something was not right about her immediately. Every time she would try to eat food, she would vomit it right back up, every single time. The only time she could hold something down was when I gave her KMR. We had an appointment with a vet on Wednesday, and I was on my way to bring her down to the president of CACR, Sara's, house so she could take her. When I got there I put Skylar in the bedroom, she was fine. About ten minutes later, I went to check on her & she couldn't breathe, foam was coming from her mouth & nose. Sara said we have to get her to Red Bank Veterinary Hospital now, so off we went. They took her in the back & got x-rays, CT scan, bloodwork, and got her stable. On the x-ray it showed a mass of food stuck in her esophagus. On the CT scan it showed the stricture. They told us the only way to temporarily fix this issue is with balloon catheter dilation. They stick a balloon catheter down her esophagus, then blow it up to dilate it. I say temporarily because some cases can require multiple dilation procedures, so there is a chance this could come back. For now she is recovering from surgery, eating a special diet & is on special medication in my home. She is the sweetest little girl ever, all she wants is love & attention. This page was created to share her story, for people to donate to her on going medical care if needed, and to bring awareness to animal lovers that this can happen to any pet!
