A Love for Pembroke Welsh Corgis

The Pembroke Welsh Corgi caught the attention of Tiffany Killblane over ten years ago as she worked in a veterinary teaching hospital. Of all the loveable breeds that came through the oncology ward, Tiffany was taken by an old, red and white corgi with a hilarious personality named “Doc”. The personality and intelligence of the otherwise grumpy old man prompted a search for puppies. Tiffany found Loki’s breeder in western Colorado. They were working dogs - every adult on the farm regularly worked goats with their humans. Loki was love at first sight and they would become inseparable in the years that followed. As Loki’s connection with Tiffany grew, he helped her in many ways - most notably by displaying a natural medical alert that could be shaped into something helpful. He continues to change Tiffany’s life for the better every day. When Tiffany and her husband Chad got engaged, he obtained Freya from a breeder in Salina, KS as he knew how much she loved corgis.

To share her love of the Pembroke Welsh Corgi with those around her, Tiffany and her husband Chad started Asgardian Corgis, named for their two starting corgis, Loki (the Norse god of mischief) and Freya (the Norse goddess of love). The intention of Asgardian Corgis is to provide an ethical, hands-on experience for puppies raised inside the home. The Pembroke Welsh Corgi is well suited to work in a variety of settings and homes. They are intelligent and eager to learn as well as please. The Pembroke was traditionally used as a herder, companion, and farm guardian by the Welsh. Legend has it that corgis were the steeds of faeries and elves in Wales as well, pulling coaches, working cattle, and serving fairy warriors in battle. If you look closely, an adult corgi typically has a “saddle pattern” on their back just behind the shoulder, harkening back to this myth. Perhaps it is the loyalty and intelligence or whimsy that drives Tiffany’s love for corgis.

Corgis are thought to either be descended from the Swedish Vallhund (a cattle dog brought to Pembrokeshire Wales by the Vikings) or from the ancestors of the present-day Schipperkes and Pomeranians, both of which were introduced to Wales by Flemish weavers.
