If you love a dog long enough, you’ll notice they share some of the signs of aging that humans exhibit like gray hair, decreased activity, and perhaps arthritis yet at a more rapid pace. The Dog Aging Project with 50,000 participating dogs and counting with the goal of getting to 100,000 dogs is looking into factors that affect dogs’ aging and their quality of life, or “healthspan” with the goal of improving both canine and human health longevity. It is the world’s largest and most ambitious dog study to date and you can take part. Currently, the project is staffed by approximately 120 scientists, students, and veterinarians from over 20 institutions is open to dogs of all ages and breeds in the United States.

While some cats love to be brushed, others may not like it so much. Regardless of where your cat falls on this list, it's important to be able to brush your cat to help keep them free of mats. Here are a few tips to make the process easier:1.Go slow at first. Try not to push your cat past their comfort zone and have lots of treats handy. 2. Start by showing them the brush and letting them sniff it, followed by a treat. 3. Let them rub against the brush or gently touch it to their head for just a second, then treat. 4. Do a short stroke on the head or cheek, then treat. Increase the length of the stroke to the shoulders, treat, and so on. 5.Brush your cat in the direction of hair growth.6.Remember to never force your cat to be brushed. If you see your cat is getting upset stop the grooming session.

Meet Hermione, today’s Tuesday Tail. Very pregnant, Hermione, was found by one of The Pixel Fund fosters so she became a Pixel kitty. Being a Pixel kitty meant that Hermione was able to have her babies in comfort and with the care that she needed. Hermione and her four kittens received the full gamut of tests, vaccines and surgeries to make sure they were ready for the furever homes, and we’re happy to report that all of the kittens have been adopted. Sweet Hermione is still waiting for that special someone to adopt her, but we know they are out there!

For today’s Tuesday Tail, we’re highlighting a special senior pup from @thepixelfund. We’re not sure why Tyson has been with the rescue for two years. They say he’s a wonderful, sweet 10-year-old boy with so much love to give…
With Tyson, every day is Tongue Out Tuesday. He loves to give LOTS of sloppy kisses.
He’s calm, gentle, and snuggly.
He has good house manners, is potty trained, and kid-approved!
He wants all your attention as the only dog of the house, although he is good interacting with other dogs on walks.
Speaking of walks, he does well on a leash and doesn’t pull!
He likes to chase everything, including flies and ants, which means you wouldn’t want to bring him around kittens or critters.
He’s the perfect travel companion who loves car and boat rides.
And his adoption fee is fully sponsored, so you will pay $0.
If you want to break his streak of having zero interest, apply to adopt Tyson at thepixelfund.org

About Franklin’s Friends
Franklin's Friends was formed in 2003 when a handful of pet lovers came together to raise money for the SPCA of Central Florida by walking in their annual "Wiggle Waggle Walk". In 2012 we created our own 501(c)(3) non profit organization so that we could support more than just one local animal welfare agency. Since our inception we have grown from a small group of friends to an organization of several hundred volunteers and their four legged companions. We were proud to raise over $182,000 last year to help needy pets in Central Florida. Over the past fifteen years we have raised over 1.2 million dollars for local animal welfare.
Our mission is to support Central Florida animal welfare by fundraising for local nonprofit and government agencies that are dedicated to Shelter/Rescue, Spay/Neuter, or Community Education programs. Our tax ID is 46-1111664.
We are a strictly volunteer based organization with no paid employees. We pride ourselves on fiscal responsibility. Expenses for our fundraising events run under 15%; well below the industry standard of 33%.
Franklin's Friends raises money primarily through two signature events - "Unleashed. Uncorked. Unframed" (a cocktail attire event with spectacular live and silent auctions) and "HOWL-O-WEEN" (a fall dog walk-a-thon and canine costume contest). Then, through a rigorous application process we grant those funds to deserving local animal welfare agencies.
We accept grant applications year round from organizations in Orange, Seminole, Osceola, Volusia, and Lake Counties. We will only contribute funds to 501(c)(3) organizations or government agencies that are veterinarily and fiscally responsible. We will not consider applications from individuals. We will not provide grants for the purchase of property or buildings. We will not grant funds to organizations who do not treat heartworm positive dogs with immiticide injections unless they are applying for funds to allow them to do so.
All funds granted are restricted to the purpose specified in the grant application which must be aligned with our mission. Any organization receiving a grant from Franklin’s Friends is required to furnish receipts demonstrating how our funds were spent.
