With permission from Susie, I'm sharing her loving tribute to Marshall:

Marshall
1/24/12- 12/18/22
Some losses knock the breath right out of you, this is one of them.
Now, I love to look at his collar. It tells the story of him.
It's faded, like his beautiful Brindle coat became as it softened with the velvet white hairs.
It is shredded and frayed, like the scars on his skin, from multiple knee surgeries
It's soft and comfortable, like his cuddly self, and comfort he provided.
It's a little less strong, as was he, the last few months.
It's well worn and tells of the adventures he had, hiking, camping, swimming, chasing, running, flying through the air for frisbees and balls.
It has connected us, so I could drag him out of a frozen lake, or a pond covered in duckweed that he thought was solid.
His hair is embedded in that collar. It smells like him, it feels like him, it even kind of looks like him.
I will always have that collar. I will always have my Spirit Dog.
One collar, one life.
Run free, beautiful Smarsh. No more meds for you, no more pain. Take the gang for a ride in that 'Roo 💔🌈💔

In today’s Sunday Seattle Times (8/28/22), Luis Carrasco writes a farewell love letter and lessons learned from his beloved canine creature, Penelope, in “Life and death lessons from my very best friend.”

He finishes his tribute:
“Yet, this is one more case of Penelope pushing me to grow up, to understand that death comes with pain, but it also comes with happiness. Even as tears still flow every time I think of her, afterward I am left feeling joy; blessed to have known her and for the time we shared.”

Mory's person, Sarah C. B. Guthrie, has given permission to share her beautiful testimony about her dear canine companion.

"I am so very sad to share with you that our very beloved Tobermory Jenkins “Mory” Guthrie the Golden Chow and Senior Studio Dog and Senior Joy Advisor passed away last week after a long battle with osteoarthritis, after an extra year of life together that was a bonus gift. His passing was peaceful and at home with Tom and I at his side.

We are heartbroken.

He was a good boy who came to us from Texas thanks to Big Dog Rescue Project. We adopted him when he was five years old. Our first meet and greet was the day we took him home.

Mory looked like a lion and had the heart of a lion—loyal and proud—but he was also a bit of a Muppet—wanting to love everyone and earnestly trying to understand what the people and dogs around him wanted in order to be friends. He had no sense of irony or sarcasm and worked me out of those bad habits in our six and a half years together.

He was also the source of Joy—in our day to day with that big beautiful smile of his—and in the practice of daily walks and looking at the sky that inspired my life and art so deeply.
If I was sad, he gave me little kisses and licked my tears. If I was stressed, he sat next to me and insisted on pets, knowing how much better I would feel. He would also do that if I was on Twitter too much. And would come to get me when it was time to go to sleep.

I always called myself Mory’s human companion, rather than dog mom, because we helped each other out as friends and companions do. Our relationship grew over our years of working together to understand and care for each other.

He helped me get through very difficult times and I am deeply grateful for the gift of having been in his life. Grateful to Ashley Lauren for matching us with Mory and for fostering him until he came to us and to Crystal Nichols for making sure we were going to be good people for Mory.

We miss him so much. 💙"

Rubin's person, Gretchen Dietz (Rubin Dietz-Gilpin), gave permission to share her tender tribute to her dear companion. I will miss Rubin's "I love my life" photos and his many adventures.

"Rubin Dietz-Gilpin February 28, 2007 - December 30, 2021
On the day before your last, we will head to the woods
Smell the fermentation of earth and water
burrow our noses in the moss
and balance walk along the trees felled by the last winter storm

On the day before your last, the ocean will call to us
and you will chase gulls and oyster catchers
roll yourself in the wet salty sand
and smile when the ocean spray lifts your ears

On the day before your last, we will swim in the lake
Racing along the shore we’ll play
A game of fetch in the shallows
and brave a long swim to retrieve your favorite toy

On the day before your last, we will eat popcorn and ham
Delight in the game of catch the kernels
Bark at the meat still left in the package
and rub our faces on the carpet in ecstasy

On the day before your last, we will run zoomies
Around the backyard, stopping to play-bow,
A wild look in our eyes
While we bark at the crows mockingly perched on the fence

On the day before your last, we will remember all your friends
the humans and the canines,
who played with us, ate with us, and stayed with us
some still here, but many, now gone

On the day before your last, we will ride in the truck
You sitting shotgun, proud and content
and roll down the windows
to watch the world, your world drift by

On the day before your last, we will climb that mountain again
Your tail swaying with each
switchback until we reach the
vista of remembering and sigh, long and deep

On the day before your last, we will going skiing
And you will race ahead barking for no reason
your curls covered in snow
Unwilling to let the day end

On the day before your last, you will not age
You will be suspended in time
Youthful and playful, determined and stubborn
Goofy and charming, impatient and loving

And on the last day, we will hold you in our arms,
Thank you for filing our hearts every moment of every hour,
For your devotion and your trust and
Our almost 15 long, short years together

And on the last day, when you’ve finally let go
we will walk you to the shore and send you out to sea
And tomorrow the waves will wash you back to us
Again and again and again"

Saying Hello to Goodbye

My name is Wendy Dahl, and I am offering this page to share my stories and yours about the companion animals we have loved and lost. My intention is to offer a space to talk about our grief and heartache, to build community for healing our hearts and to spark hope to love again.

I invite you to share personal photos of your beloved companion animals as well as public resources that have helped you. Perhaps by writing, we will discover new things about ourselves. Or our words may comfort someone else.

My lessons have helped me open my heart to love and to trust that the strength of love will keep me whole when I say goodbye. I look forward to hearing about yours.

I have a private animal behavior consultation practice and am a licensed Small Animal Massage Therapist in Washington state. My business website is: www.dahlbehavior.com. You can read my blog “Saying Hello to Goodbye” at: https://sayinghellotogoodbye.blog/.
