🐾 Meet the Breed Monday: Weimaraner 🐾

🐶 Personality:

Weimaraners are intelligent, energetic, and deeply affectionate dogs, often referred to as “Velcro dogs” because of their strong attachment to their owners. They thrive on companionship and are happiest when they’re part of the action. Their bold and confident nature, combined with their hunting background, makes them both adventurous and loyal family members.

🎾 Activity Level:

Weimaraners have high energy levels and require plenty of physical and mental stimulation. They excel at activities like running, hiking, and agility training. Without proper exercise, they can become bored, leading to destructive behaviors. This is not a breed suited to a sedentary lifestyle!

🩺 Health:

Weimaraners are generally healthy but can be prone to conditions like hip dysplasia, bloat (gastric torsion), and thyroid issues. Monitoring their diet and providing regular vet check-ups are essential to keep them in peak condition.

📓 Training:

Highly intelligent and eager to please, Weimaraners respond well to training when it’s consistent and engaging. However, they can be headstrong and require firm boundaries. Early socialization and training are key to managing their enthusiasm and ensuring good manners, especially since their size and energy can be overwhelming if left unchecked.

💇 Coat Care:

Weimaraners have a short, sleek coat that’s easy to maintain. Weekly brushing helps remove loose hair and keeps their coat shiny. They do shed, but routine care minimizes the mess. As with all breeds, regular ear cleaning, nail trimming, and dental care are essential parts of their grooming routine.

Did you know that dogs mimic certain behaviors during play that closely resemble their pre-fight rituals? Can you spot the difference?

🐾 Here are the 4 key points to look for in appropriate dog play :

1️⃣ Relaxed Body Language: Look for loose, bouncy movements, play bows, soft eyes, and open mouths. Exaggerated movements and playful vocalizations indicate happy playtime!

2️⃣ Equal Participation: Dogs should take turns chasing and being chased or swapping roles when wrestling. Watch for mutual engagement—no pinning or hu***ng. Fairness is key!

3️⃣ Fair Play: Play should remain gentle and not involve excessive biting or growling. While it’s normal for dogs to use their mouths and vocalize during play, it should be controlled and not cause harm.

4️⃣ Breaks and Resets: Dogs need to pause and reset during play to prevent escalation. Calming signals like lip licking, shaking off, yawning, or looking away are great signs they’re taking a quick break.

✅ Supervision is Key: If play gets too loud or intense, there’s nothing wrong with stepping in for a short break. It’s always better to be safe than sorry!

🐾✨Does your dog tune you out when they’re excited on walks? Training isn’t just for structured sessions—it can (and should) happen during daily activities like walks! Here’s how to use your outings to strengthen engagement with your dog:

1️⃣ Use a marker and reward: Whether it’s treats, toys, or praise, reward good behavior like loose-leash walking, ignoring distractions, and checking in with you.

2️⃣ Play with your dog: Whether it’s during a walk or at home, play is a fantastic way to build engagement and strengthen your bond. Tug, fetch, or even a quick chase game can add fun and energy to your relationship.

3️⃣ Change direction: If your dog pulls ahead, stop, reset, or switch directions to teach them that walking with you is rewarding.

❄️ 🐾 Winter weather can be tough on your dog’s paws, but with a little preparation, you can keep them safe, comfortable, and ready for adventure. Here are six essential tips to protect your pup’s paws this winter:

1️⃣ Use Paw Balm or Wax

▪️Apply a paw balm or wax (like Musher’s Secret) before heading out. These products create a protective barrier against ice, snow, and harmful de-icing chemicals.

2️⃣ Invest in Dog Booties

▪️Booties provide the ultimate protection from cold surfaces, sharp ice, and salt. Look for ones with a secure fit and grippy soles to prevent slipping. If you’re worried about your dog losing expensive booties, consider thinner, disposable rubber booties. They’re affordable, easy to use, and great for protecting against salt and snow.

3️⃣ Watch for Ice Melt Products

▪️Salt and chemical de-icers can be toxic if ingested. Stick to pet-safe products around your home and be cautious of treated sidewalks.

4️⃣ Avoid Prolonged Exposure

Baking Homemade Pumpkin & Peanut Butter Dog Treats! 🐾

Treat your dog to something special with these easy-to-make homemade biscuits! Packed with wholesome ingredients like pumpkin and natural peanut butter, these cookies are as healthy as they are delicious.

Why Make Homemade Treats? 🍪

Store-bought snacks often have additives or fillers, but with these biscuits, you know exactly what your pup is eating. Plus, they’re budget-friendly and freezer-safe for up to 3 months!

What You’ll Need:

▪️2 cups pumpkin puree (not pie filling!)

▪️3 tablespoons natural peanut butter (unsalted, dog-safe)

▪️2 Eggs

▪️1/2 cup rolled oats

▪️3 cups whole wheat flour

How to Make Them:

1️⃣ Preheat oven to 350°F

2️⃣ In a large bowl, mix all ingredients into a dough.

3️⃣ Dust your hands and rolling pin with flour, and roll out dough into about 1/2 inch thick. Cut into fun shapes (bone cutters are adorable!).

4️⃣ Bake at 350°F for 25-30 minutes.

Meet Finn!

Finn is a big, energetic mixed breed who joined us for training today. This lively guy has a ton of personality, but he’s also a bit of a handful! Finn is hyper, mouthy, and loves to jump on people. He’s used to throwing his weight around to get what he wants, which has created some challenges for his family.

Our goal for Finn is to channel all that energy into positive behaviors while teaching him the rules of polite doggy etiquette. We’ll work on building self-control, addressing his jumping, and reducing his mouthiness to help him become the well-behaved boy we know he can be.

Finn’s transformation is just beginning, and we’re excited to share his progress along the way. Stay tuned for updates on this big guy’s journey to becoming a calm and balanced companion! 🐾✨

Here’s why those ear muscles are so impressive:

• Directional hearing: Dogs can move their ears to pinpoint exactly where a sound is coming from—up to four times better than humans.

• Expressive communication: Their ear movements help convey emotions like curiosity, fear, or excitement.

• Sound sensitivity: Dogs can hear frequencies as high as 65,000 Hz (compared to humans’ 20,000 Hz), and their ear muscles help them focus on specific sounds.

🐱 🐶 Ever feel like your home is a live-action version of “Tom & Jerry”? While chasing cats might seem hardwired into your dog’s instincts, you can absolutely teach them to coexist peacefully with training and management. Here’s how to restore calm and order in your home:

1️⃣ Manage the Environment

Set your dog and cat up for success by limiting opportunities for chasing:

▪️Use barriers: Baby gates, crates, or separate rooms can keep your dog and cat apart when you can’t supervise.

▪️Provide safe spaces: Make sure your cat has access to elevated areas or rooms where they can retreat if they feel threatened.

2️⃣ Leverage Obedience Training

Building a solid foundation of obedience with your dog is key. Start with these commands:

▪️Place/Stay Command: Teach your dog to settle on a designated spot. This creates a safe boundary and prevents your dog from engaging in unwanted behaviors.

▪️Leave It/Out Command: This is essential for interrupting your dog’s focus on the cat.

3️⃣ Introduce Controlled Interactions

Reintroduce your dog and cat in a controlled manner:

▪️Keep your dog leashed: Use a leash during initial interactions to prevent chasing.

▪️Reinforce good behavior: When your dog ignores the cat or remains calm in their presence, reward them!

4️⃣ Correct Bad Behavior Appropriately

When your dog attempts to chase, it’s important to interrupt the behavior immediately.

▪️Use clear corrections: If you’re using a remote collar or leash correction, make sure it’s timely AND meaningful. If you have done the proper training, a correction should interrupt the behavior but not cause fear or confusion.

5️⃣ Be Realistic and Consistent

🔺Dogs with a strong prey drive may *always* need supervision around cats. Consistency in training will set clear expectations for your dog, but management will help keep everyone safe for the times you are not there to supervise.

🐾Trick Tuesday: Teach Your Dog to “Cross Paws”! 🐾 Looking for a fun and elegant trick to wow your friends? Teaching “Cross Your Paws” is sure to impress any audience! ⭐️Prerequisite⭐️ Your dog should already know how to give paw or target an object with their paw. Ready? Let’s get started! 1️⃣ Start with “Paw” • Ask your dog to lay down and practice giving you a paw while in the down position. • Work on one paw at a time to keep things simple and avoid confusion. • Click and reward when they succeed! 2️⃣ Guide the Motion • Gradually move your hand toward the opposite paw and encourage them to reach across. • If needed, gently hold one paw in place while asking for the other. • Mark and reward when they begin to cross over—it doesn’t have to be perfect yet! 3️⃣ Add a Hand Signal • Once your dog is consistently crossing their paw, introduce a hand signal • Reward them each time they respond to the signal. 4️⃣ Switch It Up • When they’re comfortable crossing one paw, try it with the opposite paw for an extra challenge. 🚙 🐕 If your dog jumps on the couch or other fun surfaces easily but hesitates with the car, it’s often just a lack of confidence. Try these simple steps to help them out! 1️⃣ Add a small step to break down the jump into more manageable stages. Here, I’m using a twist step attached to my vehicle’s hitch, but an RV or truck step stool, a KLIMB platform, or anything that creates a little height will work. 2️⃣ Get your dog comfortable jumping on the step alone. Once they’re confident, place it near the vehicle and use a bit of a running start. (You can also use food, toys, or whatever motivates your dog to encourage them!) (This step helps your dog realize they can do it!) 3️⃣ As your dog becomes more comfortable, lower the step or make it smaller until it’s gone—and voilà! ⚠️Off-Leash Etiquette on Trails⚠️ 🐾 When you’re on a trail with your dog off-leash, it’s crucial to recall them immediately if you encounter other people or dogs. While your dog may be friendly or just curious, not everyone is comfortable with unfamiliar dogs approaching them. Personally, I prefer not to have my dogs interact with other dogs on trails—not because of aggression or distrust, but because I prioritize their safety and the comfort of those we meet. It’s about mutual respect for everyone using the trail. If your dog isn’t always reliable in coming back to you when there are distractions, simply, they should not be off-leash. While many people I’ve encountered recently have been respectful of this, there are still those who allow their dogs too much freedom without considering the potential risks. 🥾 Let’s all work together to ensure that everyone—humans and dogs alike—can enjoy the outdoors safely.
