SciFi Labradors Producing Labradors that are out of this world! I strive to breed dogs that are as healthy as possible.

A labrador should conform to the breed standard, have a good work ethic with intense drive while still being a good companion in the home. Because that is my goal every dog in my breeding program, at a minimum, have their hips, elbow, eyes and heart tested by specialists and the results certified by the OFA. I also know their EIC status, either by DNA test or parentage. The clearances on my dogs can be found either on the OFA database or on the database belonging to Pawpint Genetics.

Wise words

Puppies are puppies, not adults

They don't have developed bodies or brains and it's unfair to place expectations on them as if they do

Would you ask a kindergartener to get a master's degree? When we expect puppies to learn and behave like adults, we set them up to fail. Even a 2 year old dog may have a developed body, but their brains are still cooking in there, just like a 20 year old human.

Yes, dogs and humans are different, but sometimes we need to understand the parallels between our development in order to set reasonable expectations. Look back on your developmental years and imagine having today's adult expectations placed on you. It just isn't reasonable or fair, is it?

Another common problem I see (and have fallen victim to) is the curse of the 2nd service dog. We put so much focus into that perfect first dog who saved us, and forget that they weren't always that fully trained adult. When a puppy can't live up to the standards set by that retired or passed dog, resentment can build and harm your relationship. Your 2nd dog will never be your first, but we need to prioritize bonding with the new dog *as they are,* including stage of development. A teenage puppy can never be as good as a trained adult and that is OKAY! It doesn't say anything negative about the puppy other than that they aren't developed enough to have all those skills mastered.

Giving puppies grace is one of the most important things we can do in order to set everyone up for success as a team

Petri is still a do**us, but after 4 months old he definitely didn't get stuck in a tomato cage again. He did that because he was a puppy who hadn't yet figured out how to use his body and brain, which is completely normal

Many thanks to Mt Rainier Labrador Retriever Club and their annual health clinic chaired by Kimberly Dotson and hosted by Stacey Parsons. I am pleased to share I took 6 dogs for eyes and 3 for hearts and I am coming home with passing tests for all. I may hate testing for TVD (I've been burned a lot) but I sure understand why it is so important.

I don't think I have ever shared my first experience with TVD.
This was many years ago while I was still in Georgia and had a bitch I imported from England. Puppies had gone home and I thought all was well and good until I got a phone call from one of the owners telling me their puppy had been diagnosed with TVD.
One hyper-focus crash course later learning everything I could about this disease I decided what I would do. I got my girl ECHO'd and she passed and my keeper puppy was also done at the same appointment, sadly he failed. I called the family back and offered them their money back or a puppy out of the next litter. They opted for another puppy. I assured them that litter would be examined by a cardiologist before going home to be doubly safe. I then called each and every puppy family and told them the news. Let me tell you, the silence of fear is the loudest sound I have ever heard, and I heard it with each family when I spoke to them. I explained to them where their nearest board certified cardiologist was, to make an appointment for an ECHO and to have them call me for payment. Fortunately, the original puppy diagnosed and my keeper puppy were the only puppies in the litter that were diagnosed with TVD but after that I was determined to do my best to never go through this again. The originally diagnosed puppy died before it was 5 months old.

It is hard for me to believe that over 20 years later there are still breeders out there who don't test for TVD. Health testing is what separates us from the BYBs, and in my opinion, anyone who is not doing these tests (or breeding on failed tests) cannot stand in front of their puppy families and say that they did everything in their power to produce a healthy dog for them. Breeders can compartmentalize loss, pet families should NEVER have to... The disease is out there. Auscultations are not enough. The cardiologists themselves say ~20% of the dogs diagnosed with TVD do not have a murmur. The only way you know you are doing your best is to test using ECHOs.

Update: A home is pending. A meet and greet is scheduled for next weekend.
This beautiful chocolate girl was on her way to her new family when they backed out mid-transport so I am helping her owner find her a different family. Chancla is sweet, fun, and ready for adventure. She loves to play and cuddle. She is just about a year old. She grew up in Montana but is currently located with me in Western Washington between Seattle and Portland. Here is what her owner wrote about her:

This sweet goofy chocolate girl is 1 year old and looking for her next big adventure.

Loves to explore, has a pretty reliable recall, loves fetch and is game to try just about anything.
Crate trained, rides great in a car crated or uncrated, potty trained, leash and show leash trained. LOVES kids, good with other dogs, unknown with cats but I suspect by her temperament she would be fine with patient cats.

Update - Crowley has found a home.

Older Yellow Male Available -
Name: Crowley (SciFi’s Good Omens)
DOB: 2/23
Parents:
Sire - Best in Show Winning, Grand Champion Silver Moonlit's Meet the Press
Dam - Grand Champion Gold, Multiple Best of Opposite S*x at a Specialty SciFi's Alter Ego
Clearances:
Both Parents tested and passed hips, elbows, heart and eyes plus DNA (Details in picture pedigree)
Theme Song: I Fought the Law - The Clash
What Crowley thinks his theme song is: Rebel Yell - Billy Idol
Neutered? Not yet, he’s not old enough. This will need to be done once he is 15-18 months of age at the earliest.

Extra Details:
Crowley was kept as one of the picks from Marvel's latest litter, but he will make a better pet or performance dog than a show dog. Crowley plays well with others, is crate trained, leash trained, and travels well in a car. He is eager to please and craves attention and just wants to be your partner in crime. He does like to give haircuts so if you have another dog, be prepared they may come up with holes in their coat. Crowley will come fully vaccinated and up to date on his deworming protocol and flea medication. Transport can be arranged so don't be intimidated by distance.

Yay! It's always a good day when it's made official!

GCH Sterling SciFi Muggle Born Witch was piloted to her Grand Championship by Mallori & Sarah of ArcticStorm Handling! Hermione will go out to select clusters and specialties but mostly stay home to revel in her free time playing with her doggy friends.

I've decided to place Flick (SciFi Sterling Wingardium Leviosa). She will do better in a less busy environment. She needs to be one of two or three. She plays well with other dogs, no issues in that regard, just needs more personalized attention to reach her full potential.
Parents are CH Rainydaze Tall Lover Man x GCH Sterling SciFi Muggle Born Witch. Flick is already pointed toward her championship and I would consider letting her go as a show dog/juniors dog to the right home.
She is sweet and goofy as the day is long. The only health testing she has had so far is her eyes which cleared with no issues. You can see her parents' health testing on the attached pedigree. Please note the pedigree doesn't show the most recent titles earned by the parents. She is neither cheap nor free.

Courtesy Posting for a fellow breeder:
Yellow female available for pet home, 6 months old. Parents have all health clearances. She is leash and crate trained. Travels well. Vaccinated and dewormed on schedule. She will be a smaller dog as an adult. I estimate 55 - 60 #'s. She does like to sing periodically but not habitually bad. Just a notification that she is still there and to not forget her. Please message me if interested.

Day 5 of Labrador Week ends with Marsh being the only chocolate dog to make the initial cut and Marvel making it through all the cuts but alas no ribbons for her. But the week has been great exposure for the baby puppies. Marvel picked up her Top 25 ribbon and Marsh was seen by a lot more people than those that have already seen him. Today's pics are more previews since we took the opportunity to so a little photoshoot with Marsh and Myth. My new laptop doesn't have a card reader and I don't have an adapter yet 😭😭 otherwise I would post these for reals.
Next year Labrador Week will be in Chehalis, WA so we hope to see you there. There will be conformation, obedience, rally, agility and hunt tests....maybe even more. The planning has already begun!
