Day 16 🐔

It's been 16 days since Lucky hen came into our care. 16 days of rehab and it's paying off!

She did a long intensive course of antibiotics, she's been getting her legs massaged and moisturizered since the wound has closed over to help heal the dryness and her skin flaking off. She is now using her leg more and her wound is also if you didn't gather fully healed over.

It's not been easy, there's been worry, questioning, a vet visit, ALOT of medical supplies used, ALOT of cleaning (rehab crates get cleaned out a minimum of twice a day sometimes more depending on why they are in a rehab crate open wounds get cleaned as soon as there's been poo!)

There has been alot of expense but all of the above has been worth it to see this hen flourish and recover.

The first photo attached is of what her leg looks like today, second photo being half way through and the last 2 photos the day she came in.

We thank everyone who has bidded and won our recent auctions without you doing this we couldn't help these hens who deserve the chance to be rehabbed and to be given the chance to live life how they should.

It won't be long and this beautiful girl will be transitioned to an outside hen house and area and slowly transitioned so she ends up with a buddy or few.

We've been getting alot of messages recently asking when our next rescues are, which areas, people wanting to adopt...

Well........ keep an eye on our page as we have not 1 not 2 but 3 rescues coming up! And we are committed to them all.

We will be seeking homes in Manawatu, Taranaki and Auckland and we will be traveling far and wide over the north Island in a couple of weeks.

So if your wanting to adopt we will be starting to search for homes once we have finalized a few details and dates. So watch this space on when applications are open. We thankfully have a small waiting list of pre approved homes so to those adopters you'll also hear from us soon 💜

In the meantime if you want to support what we do jump in, bid on our auctions as all money raised goes into rehabbing the current rehab hens to get them ready for homes and to open space for new rehab hens that may need it.

The Lucky hen 🐔

We've had several messages asking how our latest rehab hen is doing the one who's leg was severely wounded from a cable tie.

Well we can confirm she is doing amazing! The wound is healing nicely but it will take us several weeks to get her legs looking like they should they are still very flaky and dry but each day there is progress.

The first photo shows how it's looking now and the last photo hidden at the end is what it was like once we removed the cable tie.

We are extremely happy as her swelling is going down, blood flow seems to be great and antibiotics have done their job as every day there is improvement and we've not gone backwards or downhill so 🤞 because she is one very lucky hen!

We recently had a oopsie daisy moment here at the rescue...

I'm afraid oopsies happen way more then I'd like to admit 🙈

But never fear thanks to Michelle we are back to easily carting stuff around on the farm again.

A massive thank you to some of the most amazing people who support what we do and came to the rescue with more towels then we've had in a while!

The team at Petstock Ponsonby for 2 HUGE boxes of towels and a treat for some of the rehab hens 🐔

Amber and Rod from HorsePower Bed and Breakfast in Feilding long time supporters who had recently replaced some of their towels and linen and sent a huge box up 😍

And to Paula a supporter for dropping off a bag 💜 and Sam a friend for also meeting me at the vet with a large bag of towels as well.

You are all amazing and have no idea the biggest difference you've made to ensure the rehab hens are cozy and ensuring no matter the weather if towels don't dry quickly we are okay.

The newest rehab hen has settled in well and we can report her leg is starting to heal amazing!

She's on a course of antibiotics and our vet and myself have agreed on the best course of action for her rehab. Her blood flow is great and swelling should start to subside in the next few weeks with minimal side affects from the cable tie that was cutting away at her leg.

She is one very lucky hen that she was found when she was and we were called!

If anyone has some name suggestions for this gorgeous hen please pop them in the comments.

Cable ties + animals = ❌️❌️❌️

This is your reminder that cable ties and animals are NOT OKAY. They are dangerous! They are NOT OKAY for leg tags!

We had a hen come in today that shows you exactly why cable ties are not okay! Please note photos are disturbing so veiw at your own discretion!

Imagine if this hen went on a few days, a few weeks or even a few more months like this! Would she have survived? Very unlikely and if so would she be doing it with only 1 leg?

She is currently tucked up in our rehab area, the cable tie has been removed, the wound is cleaned, antibiotic sprayed, packed and wrapped, she's had some pain relief and she has a vet appointment. 99% of the time Dani can deal with most injuries and illness in house but on the rare occasions she books a vet appointment to ensure she's doing everything she possibly can to help one of her rehab hens.

We will be ensuring this hen can beat all odds and come out the other side with 2 functioning legs.

Recovery will likely take months! But that's what we do, every hen deserves a chance 🐔

WE NEED TOWELS!

We go through soooo many towels with the rehab hens! And we always love to reuse, repurpose, recycle as much as we can!! But some of the towels are on their last legs they are falling apart with each wash.

Do you have any old towels you can donate to rehab hens? The reason we use towels is that they are soft, easy to wash, means we can change frequently to keep an eye on what p**p and everything else looks like and for hens going through feet treatment the last thing they want is hay or sawdust stabbing their feet even when bandaged.

Each bath towel provides us with 2 rehab hen towels, so if your going through your cupboards and want a purpose for your old stained towels we will happily take them off your hands!

Drop offs to our rural Inglewood branch, otherwise ask for our address to send them to us... otherwise if you have a spare few dollars to donate we can search op shops for old towels or we can buy them new for $4.50 each. Our account details are New Beginnings Rescue 06-0709-0926847-00.

It's been a tiring weekend but a weekend well spent 🐓

We headed up to Auckland to finally collect supplies we never have the chance to do when on a large hen rescue but not only did we get what we needed and do everything that's been on the to do list for MONTHS, we were able to help other rescues this weekend that help animals we don't specialize in and hope the supplies we dropped off help make atleast small difference for what they do and the animals they help.

We not only helped animal rescues! But we had the privilege to also drop a decent amount of supplies off to a charity who sends packs out to families in nicu/neonatal etc.

We are back at the rescue now, showered and ready for bed awaiting lots of cuddles from the permanents in the morning (I think I'm more excited about the cuddles then they are 🤣).

I'm sure Kirsty is glad to have the full team back so she can have a well deserved sleep in!

BUT..... Most of all we got to transport this handsome boy so he could go to his forever home! It's very rare but in the past week we have helped 3 roosters find their forever homes! 🐓 💜

Who can relate 👋

Surviving is something we help alot of animals achieve. Without our amazing adopters we wouldn't be able to help as many hens or farm animals survive.

Without our volunteers we couldn't physically save as many as we do.

We thank you all 💜

Here's to another day of surviving and helping animals survive a horrible situation and helping them experience freedom from cages, from abusers from alot of situations.

Bok Bok 🐓

This handsome dude was dumped and saved by the most loveliest people however they couldn't keep him so they contacted us.

Normally we can't take roosters due to rehab hens but on the odd occasion we actually have a rooster home so with the stars aligning we were able to take him where he has now gone to his forever home!

But to make things even better! We are taking another rooster up to Auckland tomorrow for a forever home. So we've been able to help not 1 but 2 roosters this week get forever, loving, safe and WONDERFUL homes.

Thank you to the wonderful people who love roosters and have room in their homes for them. You are truly one of a kind..🐓

Colony caged hens experience FREEDOM

They've seen sunshine on their bums, grass and hay under their feet and most of all... worms and grubs and bugs and ALL the goodness that comes with freedom! Experiencing all things hens should!

It's been a very hectic 48 hours!

We've driven 12 hours, travelled many many kms.. and SAVED a few hundred hens...

These girls finally get to feel the sun on their faces, grass under their feet and learn all about worms and grubs!

A huge shout out to our adopters for loving their new hens and giving them the best of best life's and for working around our very tight schedule with short notice. To our Manawatu volunteers Hannah & Caydan thank you for always showing up to help out.

And to The Pup & Sourcer for helping us ensure any hen coming in our care had what they needed as well as the other animals in our care.

HEN RESCUE UPDATE

We would like to thank everyone who has applied to adopt we will be in touch with you all as soon as logistics are all worked out 🛻🐔

We have CLOSED our applications off while we approve homes and have a count up to see where we are at.

Unfortunately this rescue has come with alot of abuse.. And although we are understanding at the frustration some people have of our application process these rules are set in place by our charity team to ensure we follow all laws around animal rescuing properly BUT to also ensure the hens have a safe, dry and warm home to go into.

Without seeing a hen house in person, photos or other we can not process an application, we understand people have the best intentions but by our rules of our charity this is the biggest thing that has to be ticked off is confirming the housing is suitable.

For those that have abused Dani today please understand she is following our rules and regulations, she will ensure she can SAVE as many hens as she can transport safely.

We ask those who do not agree with what we require to unfollow our page. And please know all rescues we work with actually require this as part of their application process.

For now we thank Dani for everything she is doing for the gorgeous 🐔🐔🐔 who deserve to feel the sun, the grass under their feet and discover what a worm is!

EMERGENCY HEN RESCUE

We've been contacted by a farmer to help assist in removing and rehoming 350-400 hens with in the next few days which of course we said YES to straight away!

We are still working on logistics and which day we will do it on as it's roughly a 12 hour round trip for us... over 1000kms round trip...

So we need your help because of its location we are seeking interest from TARANAKI and MANAWATU adopters.

If your in Taranaki or Manawatu and would LOVE to adopt some hens in a few days time flick us a message! (Adoption donations do apply as well as meeting our adoption criteria).

*These hens are hyline hens and about 17/18 months of age.

DIRT BATHES To the general public it really doesn't seem like much... For the hens and for us it means the world... It means these newly rescued hens are exploring, having freedom and learning new aspects to life. We have a area that's rather large and designated purely for hens to dirt/dust bath. In the below video you can see one hen who is taking full advantage of this new experience and of course it's all loose so she can flap and roll as much as she wants. This is pure happiness. We currently have 155 newly rescued hens here until they head to their homes on Saturday morning and it's an absolute joy to watch. HOWEVER every rescue comes with rehab hens! And we have a fair few who require extra care, isolation and ALOT of tlc. So we need your HELP! We are running a raffle that closes in 7 days!!! We have just over 100 tickets left to sell. Here at the rescue anything that's come out of animal shelters generally goes into the garden as a way of composting but also providing the garden nutrients in a eco way..... Well Bubbles and Cherry wouldn't have a bar of it and before I could get it out into the garden, they were right into it spreading it around looking for worms! Safe to say they were happy chooks but me.... not so impressed for the gardens sake 🤣
