Dear friends,

Our hearts are heavy as we share the story of a sweet orange cat in The Plains. His collar had become trapped around his leg and neck, making it hard for him to walk. Over time, it caused serious injury and became embedded in his skin, leading to infection.

Despite a tireless community effort to trap him and get him help, his injuries were too severe, and the infection had taken hold. Yesterday, we had to say goodbye, releasing him from the pain he had endured. The loss is heartbreaking, and we grieve for this gentle soul who deserved so much better.

We are deeply grateful to everyone who tried to help him. Your care and efforts ensured that, in the end, he didn’t have to suffer any longer. Sometimes, the kindest thing we can do is to let go, even when it hurts.

We also want to take a moment to share important reminders for all pet owners:

Not all collars are safe for all animals. This sweet boy was wearing a dog collar, which can be very dangerous for cats. Breakaway collars are a much safer choice for outdoor cats, as their quick-release mechanism can prevent strangulation or serious injury.

Microchips save lives. A microchip can help reunite lost pets with their families quickly and safely, even when collars fail or come off.

Our hearts ache for this cat, and we hope his story reminds all of us how precious every life is, and how important it is to protect them 💔

💙 $5 Friday 💙

Every animal that comes through our doors has a story. Some stories break our hearts, and others remind us why we fight so hard to give them a second chance.

🐾 Cojack was found lying on the side of the road, and our volunteer feared the worst. It looked like he had been hit by a car. But the truth was different. This tiny kitten had a rare condition, Legg-Calve-Perthes disease, that was slowly destroying his hip. Surgery was his only hope. Today, Cojack is healing and finally learning what it means to feel safe and loved.

🐾 Then there’s Lil’ Wayne, a sweet dog whose gentle eyes tell a story of suffering. He came to us covered in fleas, his skin raw and infected. The fleas had drained so much from him that he was close to needing a blood transfusion (did you know that fleas can cause life-threatening anemia?). On top of it all, his mouth is filled with diseased teeth that will require treatment. And yet, through everything, his tail still wags, and he leans in for love.

These are the animals of Athens County. They don’t ask for much, just a chance. And with your help, we can give it to them.

In the midst of a busy Rascal Unit day, we can’t help but marvel at Pluto’s transformation. He came to us in such rough shape, but with gentle care, vet visits, and plenty of love, this sweet boy has blossomed into the beautiful cat he was always meant to be.

His journey is a reminder of just how resilient these little souls can be and why we do what we do ❤️🐾

Stormy is the tabby and is a female. Pepe is the black cat and is male. Both are very playful and will warm up to humans. They have bonded, so they would be good to go home together, but they can be adopted separately as well. Both are from the same litter and are 2-3 months old. They have been to the vet and are FeLV negative.

These babies have been well cared for and are looking for their forever home!❤️

Cookie is a sweet girl who is very loved by her current owners but is not getting along well with the other cat in the home. She is very cuddly, kid friendly, and does well with other animals (housemate is not a fan of her).

The UnderDog beer release at Jackie O's Taproom was such a blast! 🍻 Our winners looked so handsome in their crowns, and they soaked up every minute of it. 👑

Now, let’s help Steel find his forever home! Who could possibly resist this sweet boy—with his face on a beer can? 🐾 Reach out to the Athens County Dog Shelter to set up a meet and greet, and be sure to check the Friends of the Shelter Dogs page for more about him.

What a day of celebration for our Underdog Champion and runner-ups! 💛 Each of these sweet souls has their own story of resilience and endless love, and on Sunday, we had the chance to honor them in the best way possible.

They were showered with gifts, crowns, and pup cups. 🐾 Maverick made the trip to join us, and it was pure joy meeting him and hearing his story. Cush, our local celebrity, popped in with his signature ear-to-ear smile. Clyde, one of our beloved Underdog alumni, even made a special appearance to pass the torch. And last but never least, our champion Steel carried himself with the true grace of royalty. 👑

The love of rescue animals and the love of these four dogs in particular has already made an enormous impact on the animals of Athens County. The joy and hope they’ve inspired will keep carrying forward, helping us give so many more the chance to find safety, love, and forever homes. ❤️🐕
