I adopted a 3yo corgi at the beginning of December. She’s very calm and well behaved, and is taking well to training, socialization, and adjusting to her new environment.
**EDIT: I know the adjustment takes time, especially as it’s only been a few weeks here, and she’s making good progress. I’m not trying to push her to “adjust faster”, just trying to do one small thing each day that lets her try something new and give her many Opportunities for exploring new things. Thanks for everyone’s comments, especially those who gave me ideas I hadn’t considered-like specific toys, and different ways to prep/offer fruit and veggies that she might be more enticed to try! **
I’m wondering how to introduce two “fun” things to her world: toys and fruits/veggies. My last corgi I raised from a puppy, so he would try anything you offered him food wise and decided from there which he liked. Plus toys were a necessity for his energy.
This girl doesn’t want to try new foods unless it’s meat or starch (single noodle of pasta or bit of potato). I’ve tried offering different things and she just sort of noses them and ignores them. Other than putting it on top of her food at mealtime, any other ideas for how to introduce things? Hoping she might learn to enjoy carrots or celery as a fresh chew, or bits of fruit as a treat.
For the toys, she’s very interested in bones and puzzles and other “dead stuff” chews, and loves chasing squirrels/rabbits and stealing cat toys (which we “trade”, becuase we don’t let the cats steal her stuff either. But any textured rubber stuff, or a tug toy, or a ball, or anything else that is definitely man-made, she won’t touch (looks at it and walks away). I know not all dogs are “fetch dogs” or “tug dogs” etc, but I’d love to have her at least explore different toys and find something interactive we can play with together. So trying to figure out how to initiate that “explore this with me” sort of mindset.
Photo for tax, her favourite indoor thing to do is take a nap beside you.
