I mentioned in a previous post that I use the SMART method when I teach. This is something I actually learnt during my A Levels to help with developing revision techniques which was further touched upon during my equine degree for my dissertation.
SMART is an incredible tool to help develop goals and targets to reach that are…
🐴 SPECIFIC - what are you actually trying to achieve?
🐴 MEASURABLE - how can we measure your progress? Perhaps our transitions are cleaner than before or you’re getting better marks in your dressage tests?
🐴 ATTAINABLE - can you meet your goal? Your goals should challenge you but they shouldn’t be completely out of reach.
🐴 REALISTIC - just started riding and wanting to compete at Badminton next year? This isn’t realistic… but just started riding and want to be confidently cantering and starting to jump by next year? This is definitely something we can work towards!
🐴 TIMED - always have a goal date. I usually give months to aim for such as “by Christmas we shall be doing x” and allowing us to work towards that!
Now the smart method can always be adapted to meet riders needs. Goal posts can ALWAYS be changed and goals tweaked to continue to promote rider development.
The main focus of riding should be fun but also safety..
I always say “if it isn’t fun, why are you doing it?!” 🐴🐴🐴
