I happened to be out shopping today and found a brand new collar with the name “Maisy” engraved on it. It just so happened Rachel and I were heading out to do training with one of our puppies named Maisy. I had to pick it up and give it to her mom Heather.

She’s such a pretty girl, and working on all her training disciplines.

She’s doing an amazing job!😁

Let's talk about this photo. It's cute, except it's not. I see a dog who cannot get up without telling the child to get off. How do you think a dog is going to do that?

The 7 Golden Toddler Dog Rules:
#1: If a dog walks away from you, you DO NOT FOLLOW.
#2: Always leave room for the dog to walk away from you.
---that right there is 90+% of dog bites eliminated---
#3: We do not climb on the dog.
#4: We do not grab or pull on the dog.
#5: We do not hit or throw anything at the dog.
#6: We do not touch the dog's food.
#7: We do not go into the dog's kennel.

I promise these are not overly difficult concepts for littles, nor will they rob a kid of their bond with the family dog. It will deepen that bond, while keeping everyone safe.

"Oh, it looks like Moose is walking away from you. She is saying she wants a break. Let's play with this instead!"

"It's Moose's dinner time! Let's give her space to enjoy her yummies."

"That is Moose's room(kennel) and only she is allowed to go in there."

"If Moose wanted a break, could she walk away from you right now? No she really couldn't. Let's move away from the play house. You can keep playing but now she can leave when she wants a break."

In conclusion, ***parent your child or your dog will do it for you, and you will not like how they do it.***

Looks like I was asleep at the wheel for “National Pet Day”. I’ve been busy planning a wedding, preparing for the Pet Expo in Ottawa, along with getting a greenhouse up and functioning.

National Pet Day is everyday in my house, one day isn’t enough. I love on them daily!

Do your dogs eat stool?

I saw this in a post yesterday and chuckled, it’s definitely the truth with a new puppy and the phases it will go through. Sadly, many potential pet parents think when they come to visit me, their new puppy will be the same as my dogs. I always tell them, through diligence, constant training, and following through with our expectations of behaviour, our dogs are trained.

I’m the only breeder I know of that requires basic puppy training classes to pick up a puppy. It’s not because my pups are hard to train, it’s because the whole family needs to be on the same page when training. Far too many times, especially with younger children, I have witnessed more than one person giving commands, and the puppy is confused. Clear, concise verbal command, that the dog understands, with the follow through included. To repeat a command 3,4 or 5 times, and when it’s not completed, you give up, and do not require the dog to do the command, you’ve wasted your time.

Dog training takes work, puppies are work, the stages of development are work. This is a funny pic, however, it’s kind of true, puppies chew, they can damage things and can hurt someone if the biting is not stopped. Do not get your puppy going with play, then he/she gets to the point of “alligator”, biting all over, then expect it to stop, play needs to be positive and stopped before the puppy gets too excited. We can be the problem without even knowing it.
