Stevie's "stop on recall".
Great morning for a walk with my swamp monsters!
This is the only flower I saw in a large area. Really stood out. Gus can't believe Earl wants to apprentice as a model!
Hey! Found a great place to keep my ball!
I have friends who lost their dog because of this. I have also struggled to release a dog whose jaw got stuck in his playmate's collar. His tongue was blue, his 5 year old owner was hysterical, and I finally managed to cut the collar.
This episode taught me the danger of a buckle collar. It was pulled so tight I couldn't get it unbuckled. Now I only buy snap release collars and don't leave them on when my dogs are unattended or playing.
Sweet 14-week-old Golden Retriever puppy Percy is on the road to recovery after spending some time in our ICU over the weekend! He was an excellent patient and feels better already thanks to some time in our state-of-the-art oxygen kennel. In this photo he had popped his little head out to say hello to our staff during one of his treatments, and we don’t think he could get any cuter!
How Percy ended up spending the weekend with us is an important story that his caring owners allowed us to share to help keep other pets safe. Percy and his big brother were rough-housing, when Percy’s collar got stuck on his brother’s mouth. Percy panicked when he was suddenly stuck, and while twisting around trying to escape he caused his collar to become even tighter around his neck! Thankfully their owner noticed quickly that something was wrong and freed Percy before he lost consciousness. When his owners rushed him to see our ER team, Percy was struggling to breathe, drooling profusely, and very distressed. Radiographs showed that Percy had fluid in his lungs (non-cardiogenic pulmonary edema) caused by the time he spent struggling to breathe. Pain medications and oxygen support quickly helped Percy breathe more comfortably as his body worked to heal from the experience.
The strangulation hazard of dogs playing while wearing collars is a hidden danger that many pet owners don’t know about, but a story we hear with some frequency in the ER. Thankfully Percy’s story has a happy ending, but if his owners hadn’t been there to intervene it could have been tragic. Please, get your pups microchipped so they have a permanent form of identification, and then take those collars off when they’re playing with or interacting with other dogs!
We appreciated the cooler temperature in class this morning. Puppy Bright joined the fun, meeting and working around other dogs.
This lucky fellow just got a name (Matisse) and his forever home. We expect frequent updates! He's from a poodle rescue, so he's really appreciating a true home.
Good morning from Teika.
Beautiful Ayla's silly side.
One in four Labrador retrievers carries a gene that tricks their brain into thinking they’re starving
Gus grudgingly allowed the littles to join him this morning for a picture. MUCH easier with just Gus!
Great morning up on the Kaibab! Cool enough that Gus could play and run.
Ma'at is my zippy little dog (didn't get a video to do her energy justice).
I hate that I have to keep her on a long line, and can't give her the freedom of choice. But she's pretty hard of hearing and can't locate me when I call her, so it's for safety.
The other 2 keep track of me. Ma'at not so much. So she's stuck with the long line.
Couldn't help myself. Had to share as it made me laugh out loud!
The pups and I are staying at the Nomad Cafe to avoid the Pioneer Day fireworks.
Gus this morning. The look was because the little dogs were trying to horn in on HIS gig.
Bright loves training and learning (she calls it playing), but it can lead to needing a nap!
Meet another pup named Stevie. She's as clever as she is beutiful.

Yuccas are probably my least favorite plant. Partly because they have stabbed me so many times (yes. I hold a grudge!). Mostly because I always worry they might poke my dogs. When I was doing Search and Rescue, I never put a scent source near a yucca. But I have to admit, a yucca with fresh blooms in the early morning sunlight is pretty impressive!
Allie is a star at nosework, but here I set up a hard problem. The scent source was under the rug! She knew it was in the area, but was having a hard time actually locating it. She finally did, and indicated. It was a challenge!
