Today's good news story.

This is Shiva the Leonberger. Many of you may recognise her, as her face and her owners face have been plastered all over the media as one of the 8 dogs seized following the incident in which a young dog walker sadly lost her life.

The case was finally heard today at court and we can now finally confirm publicly that Shiva had NO Involvement in the death of the victim. Despite how the media portrayed it and continually speculated in their stories. Shiva was in fact innocent of any involvement.

Shiva was still given a control order because she jumped up at a passer by causing a scratch. This is still legally classed as being dangerously out of control.

Prosecution had asked for a lead and muzzle order on several of the dogs but thanks to the barrister the court agreed to a lead order only for Shiva.

We ask everyone to please remember a young lady sadly lost her life and our thoughts and prayers go out to her family.

We also hope the media after their speculative and bias reporting at least now print the truth and offer an apology to Shivas mum whose business and personal life suffered because of this.

Many thanks to Shiraz the barrister representing today and Pamela Rose barrister advising throughout.

Silver Paws!!!

Given we share our home with two over 12 year old dogs - which for larger breeds, definitely puts them in the Silver Paws category … and how often I meet older dogs in vet practice…. I felt it was time for some dedicated posts to help us, support our aging pets better.

I thought we d start off with a classic issue - Arthritis… some great myth busting from Canine Arthritis Management in this link

If you want to be able to take your dog places with you it’s a good idea to help them learn to settle and feel relaxed in different environments. I use a specific blanket for twig (‘pub’ blanket 😄) and she lies down and chills out on it wherever we take it. I always want her to be able to explore and said Hi to everyone first as the rewarding bit for her of going to a pub or cafe is the social aspect and being able to say hello to people. When she’s had chance to be sociable I get her blanket out and put it in a nice cosy place by my feet and she now just lies down and relaxes on it. When we started teaching her to settle I encouraged her onto the blanket by dropping a few treats on it and then I paid her for sitting or lying on the blanket by dropping treats down to her. After a while I could leave longer pauses between treats and then eventually I don’t need to use many treats at all as she finds it rewarding to relax on the mat. It’s a happy place for her as she has good associations with it. Now I just get the blanket out and she pretty much lies straight down on it. It’s worth helping your dog learn to settle and relax if you want to be able to take them to pubs etc and of course if means you need to visit lots of pubs, just to practise of course 😄

So after closing my books 6 weeks ago and turning down so many enquiries, I found myself saying yes to this beautiful lovely giant girl last week. I am so glad I did 💖. The dogs that she has met so far think she's fab 👍.
I'm just a suckered for a giant breed 🤦‍♀️

Ever wondered why a puppy's behavior seems erratic during adolescence, which occurs between six months and 18 months of age?

The neurobiology of adolescence is fascinating, with some key events that alter both the structure and function of the brain.

During canine adolescence, s*x hormones are changing which effects the animals stress responses. Adolescent dogs have a decreased ability to modulate sensory processing and subsequent behavior.

The connectivity between the frontal cortex (responsible for decision making) and amygdala (responsible for emotional processing) decreases, resulting in less behavioral control.

So what does this mean? This could mean that your dog, who used to come when called, suddenly cannot. This could mean that your dog, who didn't jump up on guests, suddenly does. Your dog that walked nicely on leash is now pulling. Or perhaps it seems like some days your dog responds to behaviors you ask of them, and some days they don't, without any rhyme or reason.

We also see increased risk taking and more sensitivity to fear.

As your puppy undergoes this transition into adulthood their inner world is intense, even chaotic. Many pet owners experience an increase in undesirable behavior and find themselves becoming increasingly frustrated. In turn, frustration and impatience sometimes cause us to act unpredictably.

This adds to your puppy’s inner turmoil. When the inside and the outside are both unpredictable it can be difficult for puppies to adjust.

By understanding this we can gain greater compassion and understanding. When we approach adolescence with patience we can help create a world that is predictable and gentle so our puppies grow up to be their best selves.
