He and Shadey the Tabby Cat are incredibly bonded. She looks at him with such love and then will look at me in a way that certifies I am just his side chick.😸

This week, Feline Wellbeing Panel member Dr Mikel Delgado joins us to talk about recognising the more subtle signs of pain in our cats and not falling foul to the placebo effect when it comes to assessing pain in cats receiving medication. Not sure what the placebo effect is or want to know more about the signs of pain? Mikel is here to join us so ask your questions in the comments!

To treat pain in our cats, we must first recognise it. This can be challenging as cats are infamous for hiding discomfort. There are obvious signs of pain, such as limping or sensitivity to being touched in a painful area. But there are more subtle behavioural signs of pain – such as hiding, reduced appetite, increased vocalisation, and avoiding human interactions. You may also notice some changes in your cat’s facial expression when they are in pain, the most common being squinting, a tense muzzle, and slightly flattened ears.

YOU know how your cat behaves day-to-day when they are feeling well, so trust your instincts: if your cat seems “off” seek help from your veterinarian.

Any treatment for pain should be supervised by your veterinarian – pet owners can be susceptible to a “caregiver placebo effect” where we see improvement when there is none. I’ve blogged about this research: in one study caregivers believed their cat’s pain improved when receiving a placebo treatment (http://whatyourcatwants.com/purrceboeffect). Another study found no evidence of improvement from a supplement for joint disease, but a big placebo effect in the owner’s perception of their cat’s pain (http://whatyourcatwants.com/does-a-supplement-for-cats-help-with-joint-pain).

Scruffing is unnecessary and harmful. There are kinder handling techniques that utilize trust, rewards, and respect. For many years, I scruffed cats. Knowing better helps me do better. Cats deserve the best we can give them.

We’re urging feline welfare, behaviour, grooming, training and veterinary organisations to join us to warn people of the possible negative effects of using unnecessary scruffing techniques to restrain and punish cats.
