VT Dog Rescue We rescue mixed breed dogs of all ages from high kill shelters in the South, rehabilitate and place them in loving homes.
(40)

VT Dog Rescue is a non-profit dog rescue. While there are many canine rescue organizations, our focus is on saving the underdog. The dogs who are passed over simply because they are not perfect. These dogs may have lost a leg or are shy. An underdog may be an older dog who is not as active as he used to be or one with a heart murmur. Dogs who have had a rough start in life but against all odds, ha

ve retained their ability to be loyal and trusting companions who love unconditionally. We believe the underdogs deserve to be rescued and placed in loving, responsible homes where they can shine.

Brynn arrived in mid-July and is super sweet! She has been acclimating well to her Vermont foster home who has been working to get her ready for her new home. A little timid to start, she has come out of her shell and her personality is starting to shine through.

She loves to play with other dogs! She is interested in the cats in her foster home but is not aggressive. With boundaries and guidance from her new owners, she can live peacefully with a feline sibling.

Brynn is doing great in her foster home! Her foster mom shared, "Brynn is the sweetest puppy. She LOVES everyone and all animals. She is a perfect mix of puppy energy and snuggles. She enjoys walks on the bike path, but take her for a walk near people and she MUST greet everyone. If she sees someone she will sit with hopes that they will come over to say 'hi'.

Leash walking is a work in progress, and she is progressing well with house and crate training. Gentle with children and loving towards all humans, we think she could fit in just about any loving home. Being with another canine friend helps her confidence, so another dog in the family or a walking buddy would be beneficial. She is highly food motivated which will help make training easier!

Greta is coming to Vermont this September! She is two years old and ready to steal your heart. As we learn more about her we will share, but for now this is what her southern foster has shared:

“She did great! Of course, I made sure to wear her out but she slept all night in her kennel peacefully! She maybe whined for a few minutes - but no accidents, no barking, no tearing anything up and honestly it took some convincing to wake up this morning haha!

She’s very good on the long lead, and while she doesn’t really know her name or how to sit (which we are going to work on lol!) she never strays more than 5 feet away and constantly checks in with me! She’s a great pup!” Be the first to apply today!

Charlie will be making his way to VT next month and we cannot wait to meet him! He loves other dogs, is great with cats, and is the sweetest boy with humans. He loves car rides and goes for walks 2-3 times a day! He does get nervous during thunderstorms or fireworks but as long as he's in his crate he does fine. Could you be the forever home he has been looking for? If so, apply today!

We are thrilled to share that Nova, formerly Klea, has found an amazing forever home!

Her mom shared "We went on our first proper walk together today and she did great! We went to the pet store after and she picked out a couple of new toys and we got a puppy puzzle (she's already starting to learn that so well). She has had an absolute blast learning the ropes at our house, exploring her yard, using her nose to figure out all the animals that live on the property, and learning and doing amazing at fetch with the ball. We're over the moon living life with Super Nova and again, we can't thank you enough. Feels like such an honor to be able to rescue this sweet girl 🥲" Happy tails, Nova!

Please share! And donate if you can 💚

We are raising funds for the increasing number of strays and abandoned animals in Vermont. The cost of vet care for these dogs has fallen on the shoulders of the animal welfare community as the state continues to fail its animals at every turn. Highlighted are a few of the dogs that are currently abandoned and in need of vet care and foster homes.
A collaboration of rescues, animal control officers, and veterinarians is happening behind the scenes desperately seeking solutions to the increasing number of issues facing the animals in this state. One big hang up is the rising costs of vet care for our local dogs and it is not a burden we can handle alone. The cost just to spay/neuter and vaccinate an animal ranges from $600-$1000 depending on location in this state. This is PER DOG. We have exhausted all low-cost options to no avail. The ones that are willing to help rescues are booked months out which is just not feasible for an animal that doesn't have a home. We are struggling just to find vets willing to administer a Rabies vaccine for less than $100. If you are a veterinarian that can help PLEASE reach out to us. With the number of unvetted animals pouring in, this is not a need we can handle without the help of our community. All money raised will go directly to the vet care needs of our local animals that have not been secured by a rescue/shelter.This is an issue that is not going away and we need all hands on deck now. If you can't donate, then please share. We also urge you to reach out to your local representatives and put pressure on finding a solution for this issue. Fundraising efforts can only get us so far. Thank you to all who are willing to help us help our animals!!

Happy tails, Daisy (formerly Blondie)!!

"Daisy is getting much more comfortable and her silly side is definitely coming through. She LOVES all people and gets so excited when anyone comes over. She really needs young dogs to play with and I am working on finding her some options. She likes being outside now and is a big fan of sticks. She even chases a ball and (sort of) brings it back!

My cats have NOT welcomed her but they are starting to hold their ground rather than just hide all day. I'll take that as progress! She desperately wants to be friends with them.

She is such a sweet girl and we are so happy to have her. Thank you for everything you did to make it happen!!"

💚 FOREVER HOME FRIDAY 💚

This sweet pup was hand-picked by her mom and arrived in Vermont a few weeks ago. We recently received this wonderful update:

"Saturn (now Sadie) is approaching three weeks at home with her person and 2 horses. She owns the place, runs to every adventure, and is fearless. She is loved by her family and human friends. Adult dogs are tolerating her, but joining a local dog daycare and getting into puppy kindergarten are the next activities. Thank you to her foster family, Luna Farms Rescue and VT Dog Rescue for helping Saturn join her forever home."

We are so happy for Sadie, her mom, and her grandma! 😉 Happy Trails sweet Sadie! 🐾❤

These beautiful pups are the siblings to Blondie, Sable, and Brynn. All have gentle and sweet dispositions. Unfortunately, we only had foster homes for the 3. The remaining pups got left behind. If anyone would like to foster or foster-to-adopt, please reach out to us at [email protected]. They are 5 - 5 1/2 months old and weigh about 25 lbs. Thanks for considering! 🐾❤

💚FOREVER HOME FRIDAY💚

Ren (formerly Daphne) is doing wonderful. She shares a home with her two feline family members that lovingly welcomed her in! She loves taking walks on the 40 acre property with them and her owner, and especially loves learning new training skills at a rapid and brilliant pace!

Her joy of chasing butterflies, meeting new people, and snuggling up with anyone on the couch captures the heart of everyone who meets this sweet little rescue.

Thank you to our southern rescue partners and to Ren's fosters for helping this sweet girl find her way home, and a special thank you to her mom for adopting. What a lucky pup!

Brynn arrived in mid-July and is proving to be super sweet! She and her sisters have been acclimating well to their Vermont foster homes, and all have amazing foster families working with them to prepare them for their new homes. A little timid to start, these girls are now coming out of their shells and their personalities are starting to shine through.

All of the pups like to play with other dogs. They are interested in the cats in their foster homes, but not aggressive, and with boundaries and guidance from their new owners, they can live peacefully with a feline sibling.

Leash walking is a work in progress, and all of the pups are progressing well with house and crate training. Gentle with children and loving towards all humans, we think these girls could fit in just about any kind of loving home. Being with another canine friend helps their confidence, so having another dog in the family or a walking buddy would be beneficial. They are highly food motivated which will help make training easier!

These girls were found, along with their siblings (10 total), abandoned under a shed. A good citizen contacted the local rescue in Mississippi and they were all rescued. Thought to be hound/bulldog mixes, these pups are fairly petite and we don't expect them to be very large dogs. Our best guess is around 40 - 45 lbs full-grown.

Meet Klea! She is an Aries with a birthday of 4/2/24. This energetic pup is a smart, confident and playful pup. She plays well with other dogs and knows "sit". This happy, bouncy girl likes people, has been exposed to children, and ignores the cats in her foster home. She likes to eat and sleep in her crate, settling down at night within a few minutes. Highly food-driven and housebroken, Klea is a goofball. She is growing into her legs and often tripping over herself. She is in the puppy mouthing stage, but listens well to redirection. Her foster mom says she is a good girl and will grow into a big, beautiful dog.

Klea would do best in an active home. She would be great with kids who will run around with her in the yard or with an adopter who likes to hike or take long daily walks. Klea has the stamina to be active all day, but will also settle down after exercise.

While we can not confirm her specific mix, we believe she may be a hound mix, potentially including black and tan coonhound.

This sweet pup is Klein. Klein is 4-5 months old and currently weighs 20 lbs. Klein has typical puppy energy, is doing well with potty training, and is a happy-go-lucky boy. Klein is good with other dogs and children. Klein will do best in a home with a dog-savvy cat or one without a cat. Klein is learning so much in his amazing foster home and is now ready for his own home.

His foster mom shared:

Klein does amazing in his crate at night. When you put him in during the day, he will whine/howl for a minute but settles down quickly. He loves to play, walks well on a leash, and enjoys playing with other dogs. He wants to play with my cats too, but is a bit rough and my cats just want to rub up on him so won't stay away. He eats quickly so a slow feeder or putting part of his meal in a kong slows him down. He has been great with going potty outside. He is practicing sit, come and fetch. His baby teeth are super sharp and he needs occasional reminding to chew on his toy when he thinks an arm or toy is fun to nibble on. He rides well in the car (does not drool or get sick). Does best when he has company to sit with- then he will just curl up and rest.We have taken him into Tractor Supply twice and he has been on his best behavior

While we can not confirm his specific mix, we believe he may be hound/mountain cur, possibly lab.

Look at this happy girl! We are so thrilled that Zangi, formerly Marley, has found such an amazing forever home. Her new family shared "Marley/Zangi is settling in well! Coming home was a big adjustment for her and she was quite timid for the first few days. She quickly opened up to us and has become the best cuddle buddy. The biggest surprise for us has been how much she loves to meet new people! Meeting our family, friends, and neighbors has motivated her to try so many new things and has helped her come out of her shell. We're having so much fun spending time with her and our loved ones and introducing her to our neighborhood. She gets a little more brave every day and we are really proud of her :)" Happy tails, Zangi!
