- There’s a few commonalities that happens when you switch your pet from kibble to fresh food 🐶 🐱 These are the most common ones:
💧 Drinking less: This is completely normal! In kibble, there’s less than 10% moisture, while fresh food is usually around 70% water. Naturally they need to drink less to compensate.
💩 Smaller poops/change in frequency/color/smell/consistency: Fresh foods are generally more bioavailable and often contain less fillers. The stools become smaller when they utilize more of the food that they eat. They may also defecate less often. They have a short digestive tract, and colors in the stool can be seen from the food they eat (eg orange from carrots or green from vegetables) - all normal! Many owners also report a more pleasant smell, especially in raw fed dogs. Consistency may also lean more towards the firmer side, especially in raw fed dogs fed bones (can look more white-chalky).
🦷 Shinier coat & better oral health: Among the most reported findings in fresh fed dogs 🐶 It can improve their microbiome and in turn, lead to less smelly breaths and build up of tartar.
👁️ Mucus in stool & eye discharge: This is often transient and common while the body is detoxing. Usually starts happening about 1-4 weeks in and usually lasts for days-a couple of weeks. Herxheimer reactions are also possible 👩🏼⚕️
💪🏻 Better muscular health: Often better BCS and muscular size (depending on diet) - this is particularly obvious in cats 🐱
