- There’s a few commonalities that happens when you switch your pet from kibble to fresh food 🐶 🐱 These are the most common ones:

💧 Drinking less: This is completely normal! In kibble, there’s less than 10% moisture, while fresh food is usually around 70% water. Naturally they need to drink less to compensate.

💩 Smaller poops/change in frequency/color/smell/consistency: Fresh foods are generally more bioavailable and often contain less fillers. The stools become smaller when they utilize more of the food that they eat. They may also defecate less often. They have a short digestive tract, and colors in the stool can be seen from the food they eat (eg orange from carrots or green from vegetables) - all normal! Many owners also report a more pleasant smell, especially in raw fed dogs. Consistency may also lean more towards the firmer side, especially in raw fed dogs fed bones (can look more white-chalky).

🦷 Shinier coat & better oral health: Among the most reported findings in fresh fed dogs 🐶 It can improve their microbiome and in turn, lead to less smelly breaths and build up of tartar.

👁️ Mucus in stool & eye discharge: This is often transient and common while the body is detoxing. Usually starts happening about 1-4 weeks in and usually lasts for days-a couple of weeks. Herxheimer reactions are also possible 👩🏼‍⚕️

💪🏻 Better muscular health: Often better BCS and muscular size (depending on diet) - this is particularly obvious in cats 🐱

What else have you seen after this diet change? 🐶 🐱

Not saying that more expensive pet food is always better pet food. But investing some time and budget into making sure your pet gets the best quality food you can get a hold of, and that suits you and your pet, can be an investment with high returns!

An ultra processed, poor quality diet have shown to increase markers of chronic inflammation in pets just as in humans (posted a study on this earlier). By giving them a good quality food, you can potentially decrease their chances of developing chronic illness (which can be very frustrating and expensive to manage). So, cutting costs on pet food does not necessarily decrease your overall expenses over time!

- We have come so far by addressing pathogens and agents of disease. We have Latin and inventor names for all of them..

And yet, we still don’t understand the full extent of the role of our endocrine glands and other organs…

There’s always those cases that have taken every diagnostic test under the sun and still not gotten a firm diagnosis.

In western medicine we can help by numbing the symptoms. But in holistic medicine, disease is often seen as arising from the body’s impaired ability to heal and maintain balance. Having a diagnosis is helpful, but not always necessary to start supporting the body heal. Cleaning up the diet, supportive herbs, help the body detox, manage lifestyle roadblocks and identify triggers can often take you a long way in managing disease. The body wants to heal, if you give it the right tools 🛠️

Need further support on a complicated case? I am open for online consults on my website 👩🏼‍⚕️ 🐶
