The story I posted yesterday has got a bunch of question so here goes...

The "service dog"/"easy-on"/"no-pull"/Norwegian harnesses (pic1) are meant to be used by...service dogs. Not our pet dogs. Service dogs are HIGHLY trained and are usually paired with owners who have special needs - vision impairment, etc.

The "service dog" harness wraps around your dog's chest and puts pressure on their shoulder, impeding their movement and gait. It may appear that your dog is magically walking better and make you feel good and powerful and "in control", but it's because your dog literally can NOT walk properly. Over time this pressure on the body will cause joint problems and soft tissue damage.

For your pet dogs, get a harness that looks like a "Y" from the front (pic5&6) and make sure it fits well (pic7). The Y-shaped harnesses allow the forelimbs to move freely, but if they don't fit well or are adjusted incorrectly then even they will cause discomfort and pain over the long term. I have linked to some Y-shaped harnesses in my bio (check for sizes).

Regardless of the harness or tool, if your dog pulls - they are going to end up in pain...as are you. Some dogs might be pulling BECAUSE they are in psychological pain/stress or are expecting pain/trauma around a certain trigger.

Any harness or tool designed to be "no pull" should only be used under the supervision of a trainer, eg a front-clip harness or a martingale collar. I'll give you a fresh reason why - as a pet parent you probably don't know how to use the tool. Your dog will soon get desensitised to any effect the tool has and render it useless even when you call a trainer later.

If your dog is pulling on the leash on your walks, sign up for the webinar (link in bio) and learn why your dog does this and what are the options available to teach your dog to have a peaceful walk.

If your dog struggles when you're trying to put on a harness, address that instead of changing to an easy-on harness. Tire your dog out before the walk and teach them to sit patiently while you put on the y-shaped harness. Take a friend's help!

Amongst the myriad highs and lows of 2021, the one high that stands out was all the time I shared with my two new companions and . There was joy, laughter, pain, tears, sleepless nights, cozy naps, meows, purrs, trills and growls, countless knocked over items, puke and p*e, a consistent sprinkling of litter on my floors, and insatiable hunger characteristic only of hyperactive kittens.

Laddoo and Katli have fixed forever my oxytocin levels, probably worsened the cortisol, reminded me of the importance of naps, stretches and daily time in nature. They have taught me how to pause to watch birds and butterflies and bees. And snakes. And bugs. And anything that moves, you know?

Thanks to them I have (re)discovered an entire species, learnt and unlearnt, and generally had good reminder of what being a new pet parent feels like. Something a puppy could never achieve, these two kits have given me - a taste of my own medicine. Worrying about nutrition, health, vaccinations... That one week I want to obliterate from my memory forever when their lady balls were removed. Where's the time left to train, huh?

It's not easy. I get it. Bast knows I have tried and failed, and tried and succeeded. As of today my 8 month old kittens are confident around dogs, cats and humans, can walk on a harness and leash, don't hate car rides, their carrier or the vet, respond to their name, can do a sit and give a paw. It might not sound like a lot but it definitely took a lot of effort, patience, research, time, and practice. And all of it was so worth it.

I cannot wait for the rest of our lives together, dolls. Love you x

Is your dog hu***ng everyone and everything? Forgotten all the commands you taught them? The sp*ed with which our canine companions grow up surprises all of us, but even the best of us are caught completely unawares when adolescence strikes in dogs.

Similar to what it is like in humans, canine adolescence is all about neurological reorganisation, hormonal changes, and maturation - sexual, behavioural & social. Dogs can hit puberty anywhere between 6 months to 16 months of age, while the period called "adolescence" can last up to 24 months of age (in humans this lasts until 20 years of age)

Happy Diwali! Great occasion to put up terrible pictures of yourself! 🎉

Last minute Diwali reminders:
- Plan walks for around 5 PM and then 11 PM avoiding the peak cracker times. 🔇💥🎆 🔇
- Keep mithai, diyas, candles out of reach from your pets. 🐶🚫🍫🍬🚫🐱
- Designate a cozy, well furnished room for your pet to chill in... Ideally, turn on some music/movie and relax with them. 🐱🐶💆🎧🎶🎞️🍿
- Don't force your pet to do anything they don't wanna. 🙈🐶🐱💖
- It is still 2021 and if you're not celebrating/feeling low, pls reach out...I'm not in a festive mood either. 🫂🤗💖

Read somewhere today - don't let your happiness come at the cost of pain/discomfort to others.

For all those using Hill's....

ATTENTION Pet Parents!

A chemical used in Milk-Bones, Ol’Roy, Kibbles’n Bits, Hill’s Pet Food and other pet foods should no longer be considered safe for consumption due to concerns about its ability to damage DNA according to a new animal-model study.

According to the Environmental Working Group: “A scientific panel created by the European Food Safety Authority found that titanium dioxide “can no longer be considered as safe when used as a food additive.” The panel, citing concerns about titanium dioxide’s genotoxicity, or its ability to damage DNA, based its conclusion on a review of hundreds of scientific studies. EWG called on the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to quickly consider whether to ban titanium dioxide from use in food."

A chemical that may damage our pet's DNA should not be fed to pets.

Titanium dioxide is on The Forever Dog’s Dirty Dozen list of additives you need to avoid in your pet food. www.ForeverDog.com/about

🥺 Our star indie pup Kuku features in this video made by his mom Samyukta. 🥺 Link to full video in the bio, do watch for all the cute footage of Kuku being a champ.

Running an online course for puppies is not easy. Each puppy is different, each family is different. Sometimes I just want to teleport through the screen and give massive cuddles to each pup, or solve their problems in a more hands-on way.

Each family who signed up for the course had their own unique experience - the outcomes may have been different but it's safe to say that the course made the pups and their humans a little bit happier and better informed than they were before.

Climate change sux. When will this heatwave end?

Even when you think the temperature is OK or feels fine to you, your fur kids may feel very differently. Animals don't sweat like humans, so they heat up a lot quicker than we do. Their primary source of cooling down is through panting which is woefully inefficient when exposed to heat (they also cool down through their paws, so be aware of this when putting booties on your pups).

The #1 cause of heatstroke in dogs is leaving them in a vehicle! Never-ever leave a pet in a car even on a mild day. While you're in the air-conditioned store grabbing a few things, your car is quickly turning into an oven. Pets can suffer brain damage and die from heatstroke.

Helpful Tips: Walk in the early morning and late evening when it is cooler. Carry water with you. Limit exercise on hot days. Avoid surfaces that absorb heat, like asphalt, pavement, metal, sand, and car seats. These materials absorb heat from the sun and can stay hot for hours (even after the sun has gone down). Temperatures on these surfaces can exceed 145° F (62.7c)‼️

Keep your fur kids safe and cool! Fans, cool surfaces, frozen treats, kiddie pools, cool washcloth under armpits, and sprinklers can all help keep the kids cooler on hot days.

Make sure fresh water and a cool place to rest is available at all times.
