Luna Rose has been placed with Pound Hounds ResQ
On intake, she kept trying to turn back and go after her parent as the staff tried to walk her to her kennel. She looked longingly back, confused, heartbroken. What had she ever done wrong to deserve this. After all, she had lived with 6 adults, a young child and a small dog and was nothing but friendly and tolerant of them all. She is such a great girl, she even earned herself a Level 2 on her behavior assessment at the shelter. Her skill set is sterling, her report card is stunningly perfect. And now she is going to die because her family said they don't have time for her? Seriously? Luna Rose is a no brainer. She is a wonderful family pet who never did a single thing wrong. She's never hurt a living thing. The only one hurt is her -- her heart is broken. There is no reason for her to die. So please, read her beautiful owner notes below, then rush to foster or adopt her now. If you cannot do that, then please SHARE, CROSSPOST, TAG and PLEDGE for her. MESSAGE OUR PAGE for assistance saving her life.
A VOLUNTEER WRITES:
"I think I told Luna Rose how beautiful she was 1000 times when I met her. She is a true beauty, and even hidden behind a fearful exterior, it shines through. There is a note in Luna’s intake that breaks my heart. “On the way to the kennel she began turning back and trying to walk towards the door.” As hard as we try to make their experiences positive while at the shelter, it’s undoubtedly an intense place and more so for a sensitive soul like Luna Rose.
Surrendered due to her guardian no longer having time for her, Luna is 4 years old. She is described as social and affectionate, and during her short 25 days at the shelter she has grown fond of familiar people and leaned in for pets. Slices of cheese helped win her affection, but overall she has continued to have a hard time.
In her previous home she lived with 6 adults, a child and a small dog. They said she preferred contact with dogs on her own terms, and in her dog to dog greeting at the shelter she was nervous, lifting her paw, freezing and walking away.
Luna Rose is available for public adoption. You can meet her at Queens ACC. Her ID is #210751."

Summary: n/a
MEDICAL BEHAVIOR:
Date of initial: 1-Oct-2024
Summary: Nervous with tail tucked and acts head-shy
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: Level 2
Recommendations:
No young children (under 5)
Recommendations comments:
No young children (under 5)- Luna Rose displays fearful behavior due to this we recommend she is placed in a home without young children.
Potential challenges:
Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition
Fearful
Anxiety
Potential challenges comments:
Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition- Luna Rose takes treats roughly causing treats to be tossed instead. Teaching her to take treats gently by rewarding calm behavior and using a clicker or marker word can help. Please see handout on Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition
Fearful/Anxiety- In the prior home Luna Rose is reported that She is fearful of loud noises/thunder, and when strangers and dogs pass she will watch them and try to pull towards them for play. She isn't bothered when she is held/restrained, disturbed when sleeping, push/pulled off furniture, feet touched or collar grabbed. When startled she will run. During Luna Rose assessment she displayed appeasement behavior such as clown smiling. she also displayed a tucked tail and back ears when greeting handlers. To help Luna Rose overcome she fearfulness, use gradual desensitization and positive reinforcement. Identify the specific triggers that cause her fear and introduce them at a low intensity while pairing them with high-value treats. Gradually increase the intensity of the trigger while ensuring Luna rose remains comfortable. This process will help her build positive associations with previously fearful stimuli. Always allow Luna rose to approach new situations at her own pace, and never force her into uncomfortable situations. Using a calm and patient approach will help reduce his fearfulness and build his confidence.
