In this :::circus music::: time in our house, I thought I’d introduce another of our special herps. Meet Pokey, a ~35yro California desert tortoise (Gopherus agassizii)* we inherited from a family member a few months ago. 🐢
Pokey had a significant limp in her right foreleg, so we took her to Dr. Greek (who owns several different chelonians himself, and has published research papers on them). I asked for X-rays, and he humored me while saying that in 95% of the time, X-rays don’t show anything when dealing with a lame tortoise. Then he looked at her X-rays. 👀😳
Pokey had either a bone infection or bone cancer in her right shoulder, and seeing as there were no other boney abnormalities on the X-ray he concluded it was most likely an infection. Some antibiotics, some meals, and some TLC later, she’s doing well.
We adore her. She’s a bit of an aloof grump. Same, girl. Same. 😑
* Desert tortoises are a highly protected species and it is illegal to take one from the wild. Pokey was taken in by her previous owner as a hatchling before the law was passed, so she was grandfathered in and is a permitted and registered. She wears her registration sticker under one of her wheel wells. 😁
