Brisco studying runs yesterday.

We ended the day with a second, a couple of thirds, a couple of fourths, and two NQs (cattle).

To be honest, his first duck run (third) and both sheep runs (second and third) I think should have scored higher. ASCA scoring is really weird, and I went into this knowing that. He’s such a nice dog, I thought it would work.

We were looking to earn a Best Started Aussie buckle but unless I can suss out what the judges are looking for and have a miracle day, that won’t happen.

Beyond started, the judging (IMO) seems far more logical. My friend Cathy Sumeracki is doing exceptionally well, beating all the Aussies with her border collie.

If we stay out of the running in Started, we’ll move up tomorrow to Open.

Brisco is being a champ. The cows flummoxed him and his run was hopeless, but the second was a vast improvement. Hopefully he’ll improve more today.

He ran 6 times yesterday and was just as good on his last run as his first. Love this guy! He’s such a good boy! ❤️❤️

Brisco’s first ASCA (Australian Shepherd Club of America) Stockdog trial.

On ducks, I think he’d be hard to beat. His run was smooth and went pretty flawlessly.

Cows was a disaster. The cows want to run and he struggled to gain control. We spent the whole time trying to gain control of the cattle. We did finally gain control with enough time left to repen them, which Brisco did a lovely job at the end. He tried his heart out.

Sheep went exceptionally well. There were also some good runs on sheep so I don’t know how we landed, we made a pretty obvious mistake, but he did really well with really light sheep.

Disappointed in our neighbor’s failure to go on morning walks the past few days, Matilda went to her house and stared in her window, and barked, demanding she come out and entertain her (Mickey, the neighbor’s dog, is thrilled just to have Matilda). Unsure at this time if she was able to get my neighbor to hike in sub-zero temperatures.

Spent the last morning of 2024 out with friends and dogs and sheep in the beautiful Sonoita grasslands ❤️❤️

Our run lasted 30 seconds. Working at distance is hard for young dogs, and when I asked Brisco to flank and the sheep skittered instead of moving off him in an orderly fashion like he expected, Brisco made the puppy decision to blast off in pursuit of the criminal sheep. There was no visible grip that I could see, but that behavior does not get rewarded. So I called our run. This will likely fix itself with maturity.

Matilda likes to go for walks with the neighbors. She isn’t allowed down by the sheep because of a long criminal history involving them. So, she sits at the top of the driveway and stakes out the neighbors, and when she sees them she goes past the sheep and goes with them on their morning walk. When they return after their walk she either comes directly home or hangs out at their house in the event something better is happening there. If it’s not, she returns home.

The battle rages on 🔥🦦

Luna has moved into my gold program for sports dogs. This was the maniac cattle dog with human and dog reactivity stemming largely from over arousal (bat sh*ttery). She’s come a long way and now we’re moving forward, putting her crazy to work! ❤️❤️

To make Tagg’s house arrest less boring, she gets to come downstairs and be tethered to the table where I sit. She still has complaints!
