Northeast Coonhound Rescue, Inc. NECR's page is for sharing pictures, videos, information and fun facts about coonhounds - the breed we know and love! www.necoonhoundrescue.org.

Direct specific rescue/adoption requests to [email protected]. Coonhounds are abandoned in shelters because in many parts of the country they have very little value as pets. They are often kept outside in pens and sometimes do not even have names. They are often surrendered after hunting season is over, or if as young dogs they do not prove themselves to be good trackers. They can also b

ecome stray after wandering off, as well as falling victim to changes in the owners health, finances or living situation - like all shelter dogs. Because they are so 'common' in the South and relatively unknown in the North, coonhounds often never make it out of shelters and are passed over by other dog rescue groups.

Arlo has lost his home and is looking for a new Forever Family. Arlo was adopted last Summer and was doing well until the 7 yr old girl in the family apparently woke him while he was sleeping on the sofa. Arlo didn't like this and it did not end well, so Arlo is being returned to the rescue. ( Please no judgements or harsh comments). Arlo had made a lot of progress in settling into this home. He loves a routine schedule, lots of time outside, and has worked with a trainer to settle himself when he gets overstimulated aroound other dogs or on rides in the car. He has been doing really well and his trainer is available to pass on suggestions to a new adopter. Arlo is a very sweet and well-behaved dog, and like many coonhounds, he loves attention and being together with his family. Arlo's ideal home would offer dog-experienced adopters, no children, and plenty of outdoor time and exercise. He has lived with larger dogs and does fine. He has the potential to be a great coonhound companion. Arlo is about 5 yrs old and weighs about 55 lbs. If interested, please visit the Adopt section of our website:

**We are no longer accepting applications for Beauty as of 1/24**

We have puppies!!! This trio of coonhound pups were found stray (dumped) in southwest Virginia. They are healthy and were apparently well-cared for previously. They LOVE people and attention, and are good with other dogs. They are all 6 months old. Boone is a redbone mix and the largest at 28 lbs. He's confident and friendly; Beauty is a black and tan female, also friendly and wiggly; Betsey, another redbone mix, is the smallest at 22 lbs. She's more tentative but has gotten over it quickly in her foster home, likes to be petted and takes her cues from the resident dogs. They will all be ready for transport in February. If interested, please visit our website for an adoption application.

Courtesy Listing for Arlo at Quincy Animal Shelter - Please share with your hound friends:
Arlo is an 11-month-old blue tick coonhound. He came to the Quincy Animal Shelter because of the health conditions of his owners. It has been a hard transition for him.
Arlo is a young dog, still a puppy, with a lot of energy who is looking for a family who will spend time with him in exercise and fun and training. Arlo is a good dog, and a very sweet dog, but he does have a few puppy behaviors such as jumping in greeting, which will need some guidance.
Arlo gets along well with other dogs, and he has spent time with children over the age of 10 and done well with them. He seems to love anyone who gives him attention.
If you were looking to add a young active dog to your home, who has a big heart and loves everyone, please consider meeting Arlo.

LAST CALL !!! Winston says 'Hey everyone, just two days left to make those 2024 donations to NECR.' We'll be posting our newest rescues this week. They will all need vetting, transport and some boarding before coming to Massachusetts. Our adoption fees never cover all the costs of each dog's rescue. We count on donations to close the gap and cover any vetting for unexpected injuries or conditions like Heatworm. All donations are tax-deductable and NECR is an all-volunteer 501(c)(3) non-profit. THANK YOU to all of our supporters, who've made another year of rescue possible.

Welcome Home Tucker! Tucker's adopters sent this recent update on Tucker in his new home:
Tucker is the sweetest boy. 🥰 He is a foxhound that was with his family his entire life, from puppy up until age 10. At age 10, his family decided that they didn't want him any longer and dropped him at a Virginia shelter. NECR put out the word for him and I just couldn't say no. He was scooped up and placed in a wonderful foster home for a few weeks, until last week when he was transported here to MA. We picked him up on Saturday and brought him to his furever home. He has a new family now, one that will never throw him away again. He has the gentlest, sweetest soul. Christmas came early for us this year. Welcome home, Tucker! We're so glad you're here.

Our Story

Northeast Coonhound Rescue is dedicated to the welfare and rescue of coonhounds, hound mixes, and beagles through the transport of dogs from southern and midwestern states to the Northeast. We also are focused on promoting the breeds and educate potential adopters about owning Coonhounds.

Coonhounds are the all American scent hounds. Sadly many are abandoned in shelters because in many parts of the country they have very little value as pets. They are often kept outside in pens and sometimes do not even have names. They are often surrendered after hunting season is over, or if as young dogs they do not prove themselves to be good trackers. They can also become stray after wandering off, as well as falling victim to changes in the owners health, finances or living situation - like all shelter dogs. Because they are so 'common' in the South and relatively unknown in the North, coonhounds often never make it out of shelters and are passed over by other dog rescue groups. Northeast Coonhound Rescue aims to change this through adoption and education.

For those unfamiliar with the breeds, there are six recognized breeds by the AKC: American English Coonhound (Redtick), Black and Tan, Bluetick, , Redbone, Plott Hound, and Treeing Walker Coonhound. The UKC also recognizes the American Leopard Hound as part of the Coonhound family. Most coonhounds (all but Plott and American Leopard) are descendants of foxhounds. Plotts are descendant of German boar hounds and the American Leopard is from Spanish and Mexican hunting dogs.
