🥩 Fresh Food Friday is back to highlight the diets that include dry pet food and fresh food ingredients. There are valid reasons why a pet parent may choose not to feed a complete raw or cooked diet to their dog. However, fresh food can still be included in dry pet food diet when feeding a 100% home prepared diet is not feasible.

🙋 Ronny's two performance dogs, Quest (GSP) and Kessel (APBT), both have dry dog food in their diet for two reasons:

1️⃣ Traveling & Primitive Camping: Being away from home and without access to electricity makes it difficult to maintain a diet that is entirely raw. Therefore, dry dog food is provided to keep their digestive system acclimated to the food for in times where it needs to be increased.

2️⃣ Budget: Food costs are on the rise and the amount of fresh food that is needed to maintain ideal body weight for both dogs becomes expensive. The addition of dry food helps mitigate food costs.

👋 Part of professional growth is acknowledging where we started and what lead us to making the choices we make today. The canine nutritionist I was when I started Perfectly Rawsome in 2015 is not the same nutritionist that I am today. I am going to share these insights with you...

🐾 One of the biggest changes I have made is to encourage pet owners to feed fresh foods that they are comfortable feeding – specifically ground food versus whole pieces. I believed I was pushing a nutritional bias that would improve dog's and cat's lives but the opposite occurred.

❌ Then:
I encouraged pet owners to feed whole pieces over ground food to promote chewing.

👉 These recommendations do not consider the nuance that is required to ensure that a home prepared diet will be fed throughout time. Recommendations that illicit feelings of uncertainty results in a lack of commitment.

✔ Now:
I prioritize pet safety and the owner's comfort to ensure that the home prepared diet is sustainable.

👍 Diet recommendations that account for the nutritional requirements for the individual pet and the comfort level of the pet guardian yields a long term commitment home prepared diets.

🔎 Identifying a pet's body condition should not based on sight. Instead use the hands on body check to determine if a dog or cat needs to loose, gain, or maintain body weight.

🐶🐱 Pet Body Condition Score Guide
The best way to determine a dog or cats body condition score is to do a "hands on" check. This is when the pet parent physically touches the dog's or cat's ribcage to compare the sensation to different portions of their own hand.

👊 Underweight, Unhealthy: BCS 1-3/9
Make a fist and lightly glide your fingers over your knuckles. A dog's and cat's body condition is underweight if their entire ribcage feels similar to this.

🤚 Ideal Weight, Healthy: BCS 4-5/9
Open your hand, palm facing down. Lightly glide your fingers over your knuckles. A dog's and cat's body condition is ideal if their entire ribcage feels similar to this.

✋ Overweight, Unhealthy: BCS 6-7/9
Open your palm and lightly glide your fingers over the base of your fingers. A dog's and cat's body condition is overweight if their entire ribcage feels similar to this.

✋ Obese, Unhealthy: BCS 8-9/9
Open your palm up and lightly glide your fingers over the base of your thumb. A dog’s and cat’s body condition is obese if their entire ribcage feels similar to this.

⚠️ There are some dog breeds, particularly sighthounds, that have slightly varying results to these guidelines due to their unique physical structure.

📅 Messy Bowl Monday is back and I am looking forward to highlighting realistic photos and videos of every day home prepared diets for dogs and cats. Social media has a way of glamorizing every aspect of our lives which leads to burnout.

🎨 Visually aesthetic photos and videos of home prepared diets are an excellent learning tool to highlight individual ingredients utilized to create a balanced diet. However, its not a realistic view on how most pet parents feed their dog and cat.

🙋 Messy bowls are a part of our every day lives. I do not have a lot of time to prepare visually aesthetic bowls for my dogs and they still receive high quality nourishment to sustain optimal health.

⚠️ This batch of food contains raw poultry and beef but was home prepared in November before confirmation that H5N1 has been found in raw poultry. The photo was taken in early December to create content for social media. Today, Perfectly Rawsome encourages dog owners to cook chicken and beef in light of the current status of H5N1; and until further information on cross-species and mammal-to-mammal transmission is available.

✨ Dry Dog Food + Fresh Food Spread Sheet 2.0 Version Update Release!

👉 There are valid reasons why a pet parent may choose not to feed a complete raw or cooked diet to their dog. However, fresh food can still be included in dry pet food diet when feeding a 100% home prepared diet is not feasible. The new version of the spreadsheet simplifies the user interface from the previous version but still provides the following features:

1⃣ Offline Accessibility
Adjusting feeding amounts can be accomplished offline through Microsoft Excel. Additionally, Google Sheets offers offline editing capabilities within the settings and needs to be manually enabled to gain access to this feature.

2⃣ Whole Food Focused
The spreadsheet calculated up to 20% of fresh food additions into dry pet food. Fresh food options include muscle meat, organs, fatty acids, and antioxidants.

3⃣ Batch Calculations
A shopping list calculates the total feeding amounts to any desired number of days.

4⃣ Budget Calculations
The shopping list provides the ability to input ingredient costs to maintain a feeding budget.

5⃣ Customizable
The spreadsheet provides the option to add custom foods into the spreadsheet. Written instructions are provided with the spreadsheet purchase.

🐾 Begin National Walk Your Dog Month with a diet that provides the appropriate macronutrients to support weight loss in dogs that have a challenge of maintaining ideal body weight! Home prepared diet macronutrient recommendations for dogs that are prone to obesity include:

💧 76-67% Moisture
🥩 13-16% Protein
🥓 7-9% Fat
🍠 2-4% Carbohydrates
🌾 2-4% Fiber

👉 The common diet recommendation for weight loss is a low fat diet and calorie restriction but that has limiting factors for weight maintenance and maintaining muscle mass. When calories are restricted, the total quantity of protein is decreased and muscle loss may occur with prolonged feeding. Furthermore, the body's metabolism begins burning carbohydrates for energy while reserving body fat when dietary fat is the only macronutrient that is decreased.

👩‍🏫 The alternative is to maintain calorie intake required for ideal body weight but to provide a diet that is high in protein, low in fat and carbohydrate to manipulate the metabolism to burn stored body fat versus using dietary fat and carbohydrates for energy. Lastly, maintaining calories and higher protein levels ensures that muscle loss does not occur when body fat is burned for energy needs.

⚠️ A complete veterinary exam should be performed to rule out medical conditions that contribute to weight gain in dogs who have difficulty loosing weight on diets suitable for weight loss.

🧭 Navigating a fresh food diet when a biosecurity concern enters into the food supply is uniquely challenging and often leaves pet parents questioning the safety of the food they feed.

🚨 Thoroughly cooking all raw products that are fed to cats is highly recommended to avoid the risk of H5N1 infection because of their increased susceptibility to death.
