🩺 Dr. Facison earned her DVM from Lincoln Memorial University College of Veterinary Medicine after graduating from TUSKEGEE UNIVERSITY

We’re happy to share this collaboration each year as we continue to honor the first Black veterinary graduates from each college. Which of these graduates inspires you the most?

This Black History Month, take a minute to reflect on Black history in veterinary medicine. The First But Not the Last project was built in conjunction with BlackDvm Network to compile a list of the first Black graduates, both men and women, from each veterinary school.

✨ We are excited to announce our 2024 series dedicated to honoring Black History and sharing the incredible contributions of the CARE community.

Our aim is to highlight the important role played by African Americans in shaping our country's history, both past and present. The American Black History Month series, which is in partnership with the BlackDvm Network, will feature conversations that center around African Americans working within the human and animal well-being framework. We will also be discussing significant historical black figures and events that have shaped our nation.

Our program is in support of the Dr. Jodie G. Blackwell Scholarship fund, and donations made in the month of February will go towards it. We believe that the first step to honoring Black History is knowing Black History, and we invite you to join us on this journey of learning and discovery.

Only 2.2% of veterinarians in the United States are Black.

Black veterinary graduates average $188k in debt (some up to $300k), which is more than our non-Black counterparts.

The Dr. Jodie G. Blackwell Scholarship Fund was founded in 2021
by CARE and BlackDvm Network. Our 2021 calendar, along with Maddie's Fund, Tito's Handmade Vodka, and other individual donors, raised $162k to donate to a Black veterinary student at TUSKEGEE UNIVERSITY CVM.

The 2024 calendar serves the same purpose - to raise funds and support a Black veterinary student.

Each month of the calendar tells a story of triumph and victory as Black veterinarians, hospital administrators, and students share their path in vet med.
