𝗥𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗵 𝗟𝗶𝗳𝗲 𝟭𝟬𝟭: 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗽𝘀
From the drovers of the cattle drive era to today's rodeo athletes, cowboys have long been wearing chaps. These leather leg coverings, often adorned with fringe and patterns, have become an icon of cowboy culture.
𝗦𝗼 𝘄𝗵𝘆 𝗗𝗢 𝗰𝗼𝘄𝗯𝗼𝘆𝘀 𝘄𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗽𝘀?
𝗣𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻—from thorny brush, weather, and other environmental hazards.
𝗚𝗿𝗶𝗽—When a horse gets broncy, leather tends to grip better than jeans.
𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗱𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘀𝘁𝘆𝗹𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗽𝘀?
𝗔𝗿𝗺𝗶𝘁𝗮𝘀 are the oldest style of chaps worn in the United States. This style originated on the haciendas of Spanish colonial ranches and is a closed, three-quarter-length design. They are secured by a strap around the waist.
𝗖𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸𝘀 are thought to have been developed on ranches in California. This style is much shorter than armitas and is secured on the upper thigh. In terms of coverage, they occupy a middle ground between batwing and shotgun chaps—they fit close to the leg without being tight or restrictive.
𝗦𝗵𝗼𝘁𝗴𝘂𝗻 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗽𝘀 offer the most protection from brush, thorny plants, rain and snow. This style started with Texas cowboys, and the popularity of this style peaked in the 1870s. They do not have a flap like the batwing chaps, but they do flare enough near the bottom to fit over boots.
𝗕𝗮𝘁𝘄𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗽𝘀 are one of the most distinctive styles. They are more open, and over more airflow than other styles. The name comes from the flap design that makes the wearer look like they have “wings” on their legs.
𝗪𝗼𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗲𝘀 (pictured here) are a style that is little worn today but has been immortalized in the paintings of Frederic Re*****on. This style originated in the northern latitudes of the country where warmth was needed in winter. This style of chap is usually made with a fleece or cut from hair-on cow or buffalo hide, then lined with canvas for added moisture resistance. This style appeared in the 1880s and was popularized in early Western movies.
𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗱𝗼 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗽𝘀 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗳𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗲?
These days, fringe is largely decorative, but its origin is functional: fringe funnels raindrops off the rider's leg instead of letting the water collect on the leather.
𝗜𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗱 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗱 𝗖𝗛𝗮𝗽𝘀 𝗼𝗿 𝗦𝗛𝗮𝗽𝘀?
Short for "chaparejos" (shap-ar-EH-hos), the most accepted pronunciation of the word in ranching circles is "shaps."

Feeding Fridays
Did you know that water is considered a nutrient?
Water is the most important nutrient for horses. The average adult horse drinks between 10 and 12 gallons each day. This article contains information on the importance of water to horses.
Water Needs for Horses
Clean, fresh, palatable water should be available to the horse at all times.
A mature, idle horse (500 kg) will require between 10 and 12 gallons of water per day, depending on environmental and/or physiological conditions.
Factors that change water consumption include: pregnancy, lactation, work, profuse sweating, and environmental temperature.
Pregnant mares require about 10 percent more water than nonpregnant mares. Lactating mares require 50 to 70 percent additional water to replace the water used in milk production. The water requirement for horses subjected to hard work will double due to water lost through sweat and respiration. Increases in ambient temperature will also cause the horse’s water requirement to double.
Before and during prolonged exercise, horses should be encouraged to consume as much water as possible to prevent dehydration. Following exercise, horses should be cooled down before drinking or have free access to water. Water consumed in large amounts by a hot horse after exercise can lead to colic, laminitis, or founder.
Automatic horse water bowls are useful because they provide a constant supply of water and decrease labor costs. Frequent cleaning of water buckets prevents horses from ingesting anything that may have fallen into them, such as f***s. Cleaning also prevents algae or bacteria buildup on the walls of the bucket. Water temperature should range between 45° to 65ºF (7° to 18ºC), because horses will be reluctant to drink water that is too hot or too cold. In the winter, outside water should be checked regularly to make sure that it is not frozen. If horses are housed in box stalls, small water heaters may be used to prevent water from freezing.

Congratulations to Chloe O’Neal & Spurs N Scotti “Moon Pie”. They placed Second Overall in the Ranch Horse Versatility All Around, at the 2024 Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo.
This was a special ride for duo. As it was their first show back, after multiple set backs last year. We weren’t sure Moon Pie would be ridden again, let alone return to the show pen. But this special mare wasn’t ready to give up, and she showed us… she belongs there!

Equine Emergancy Supply Kit - Part 1 🐴 While waiting for the vet to arrive - Do you have essential supplies readily available and know how to administer them?
Meet Ruby Jean, and learn about the Miniature Hereford Breed🐮 “The Miniature Hereford has been developed over the last 30 years by selective breeding of stock that was originally imported to the US from England in the early 19th Century. The Miniature Hereford breeding program was started by the Largent family in 1974, whose ranch is located in the Davis Mountains of Texas. Rust Largent initially concentrated on breeding the most efficient cattle suited to the local conditions of his ranch. After working on size reduction for several years with efficiency in mind, a bull called Laser was used at the ranch that enabled a reduction in frame size to be achieved at an increased rate. Since Laser there has been a succession of small animals. The herd has been systematically culled and improved continuously to produce the base herd. The first Miniature Herefords were sold on the open market in 1991. All Miniature Herefords are able to be registered with the American Hereford Society, once they are checked free of the dwarfism gene. The only difference between a Hereford and a Miniature Hereford is the height, the Miniature has the same body profile in terms of proportion to a full sized Hereford. A Miniature Hereford averages around 107cm (42 inches) in height and weighs around 450kgs (1000 lbs). Apart from that the Miniature Hereford is the same in characteristics as its larger counterpart.” - The Cattle Site Benefits of Miniature Herefords: - Easy to handle - Effective food conversion - Mature up to 20% earlier - Very docile - Quality beef - Retain the great traits of the Hereford - Are commonly used as pets - Good for children for 4H or FFA animals #RubyJeanMiniHereford #MiniatureHereford #MiniCow #Cattle #OPHorses #ONealPerformanceHorses
