HAPPY 2nd BIRTHDAY ATTICUS!

Time flies when you are having fun and the last year has been so much fun with the little guy! We went through being a teenager and survived and he’s matured into such a sweet, loving dog. We a lucky to have him and he’s fitted in perfectly.

He always tries his hardest with everything he does and over the last year we were old enough to enter lots of other sports like tricks, dancing and agility! He’s picked up a few titles and has already achieved more than I could hope for this year and always does it with the best attitude.

We are still learning lots as we go, but he makes me look like I know what I am doing 😝 thanks for making me look good little guy 🥰

Hard to believe that little guy turns 2 in a few days! He’s also not so little anymore and while he is actually a bit shorter than Rufus when standing, his neck is so long that he makes Rufus look short when sitting.

This little guy got himself a novice tricks pass, a jumping pass and his JD title today! We also got to watch Updog, a cool frisbee sport. We didn’t take part this time because of time pressures and the wind being so strong but look forward to it next time. 🥏

It was a very early start (5.30am!) and a very long day for him but he handled it with so much patience. There was of course, lots of nuggets and snacks along the way!

This little guy outdid himself this weekend at the NSW Agility State Titles!

Quallies in novice jumping, novice snooker and novice pairs 🤩 and making it into the finals for novice jumping! Today he ran clear in the finals and also walked away with 2nd place! So good for such a baby dog.

After having a few distracting moments in the last couple of trials, we’ve gone back to work on some foundational behaviour, attended some workshops and learnt to run faster 😂 this weekend he didn’t run to the steward table or around obstacles once! He had a few sneaky looks but he kept on course!

Looking forward to learning lots more together 🥰

One goodest girl and two goodest boys went on a road trip this weekend and did some tricks!

We had crazy strong cold winds, a nice sunny day, the loveliest judges and most supportive competitors 🥰

Rufus got the last pass he needed for his advance tricks title (we made it buddy! 🥹) and Atti picked up a couple more novice passes 🙌

And congratulations to our talented friend for getting your starters title!

Little guy got his Scentwork Interiors element title today!

That’s 11 interiors passes across all the levels 🤩

I also judged some amazing advanced teams and we got to be demo dog for .magni.sportsdogs excellent containers. It was a lovely day and we celebrated with a swim and frisbee. Yes in the middle of winter, but it was what he really wanted to do 😅

Little guy got his Excellent Scentwork title over the weekend!

At just under 2 years old (22 months exactly actually!), I am so impressed with him and his work ethic. His determination and ability to focus when it’s time and switch off when he’s waiting is unbelievable.

We waited almost an hour in line for the last search we needed. Not ideal but he sat with me so patiently at each staging area and then when it was time he worked his little butt off in a challenging search. Rufus would have been over it by then!

He’s an honest boy, tries his very best and communicates beautifully. You can actually watch the highlights of his Scentwork journey on my profile. All the way from when we started introducing odour!

We had our very first excellent search with .magni.sportsdogs and it was just fitting that we ended our last excellent search with her. Together with her and so many of our lovely friends ( .ess .pup ), they have all helped me train and set hides for this little guy. Thank you!

Looking forward to tackling the rest of masters together!

Thank you to for letting us have this all around goodest boy.

The boys did good today! Masters interiors passes for both of them at the trial

And with that Rufus the goodest boy earned his interiors element title 🙌

And Atti and his amazing newly adopted handler .magni.sportsdogs were superstars! Coming in 4th 🤩thank you for running him, he said he had the best time!

Both dogs missed a hide in masters exteriors but I’m so happy with how they worked! Atti worked with a new handler and didn’t p*e in the search area 👊 Rufus and I were able to put our scent camp learnings into practise and I was able to think clearly and help him find the hides way more efficiently 👊 can’t wait to keep trying all the different skills!

We did it buddy 🥹 Today Rufus got the final pass needed for his JD title. Easy for some but was quite the journey for us.

From starting out as two team mates who knew nothing to now being able to work together to run a clear course. He taught me how to handle better, choose better lines for him and how to train better. We’ve had a lot of help along the way and I’ll forever be grateful for the patience and kindness that instructors have given us.

We’ve been chasing this last pass for a while with lots of close ones in between. But recent ring stress forced us to reevaluate and try some new things. And today he ran beautifully, no refusals and most importantly, no sniffing the ground. Just a happy boy doing the course and really running 😍 No video because I have discovered recently that anytime I ask anyone to film something for me, it all goes pear shaped. So I didn’t want to jinx it 🤣

We had the last of our trials in QLD yesterday - Tricks and Scentwork! Not to be outdone by his brother, the little guy passed his first novice tricks with 1st place and excellent exteriors with 2nd place. He worked beautifully in a distracting environment and really was the bestest boy especially after a whole week of literally staying indoors because of the rain and work.

And Rufus got another advance tricks and masters exteriors pass ❤️ thank you to the Labrador Retriever Club for such a lovely and well organised trial!

It’s been a great week up in QLD and we were glad to make some new friends and see lots of familiar faces. We are sorry we brought the rain with us! It unfortunately rained all week so we spent the majority of our time indoors. We head back to Sydney today and I am sure we’ll also be bringing the rain home with us. ☔️

Australia’s first ultimate trial/s in QLD and what an AMAZING experience it was!

Big areas, lots of different spaces, 3-10 hides, combined elements, tight search times and it was so much fun! We had to make quick decisions, climb stadium steps together, make a plan, manage our time, cover every nook and cranny together and most importantly trust each other. It was the best experience ever! Swipe for photos of our search areas - WE GOT TO SEARCH A POOL!

Trial #1 - 9 mins. 7 hides. 3 vehicles, 2 exteriors and 2 interiors

Trial #2 - 8 mins. 7 hides. 20 containers, 2 interiors and 1 exterior

I am honestly still in disbelief that we managed to pass both but so proud of our teamwork and Rufus’s searching tonight. He really blew me away! He not typically a fast dog but he was focused and so determined tonight 🤩 he finished with a reasonable amount of time to spare but his handler decided to use the spare time to double check some things instead of calling finish 😝

It was an honour for us to do this with .magni.sportsdogs and 15 other top level teams. Thank you to the Scentwork committee in QLD for making this happen. The future of this sport is looking so exciting!

Our very first obedience quallie 🥹 This boy did so good today!

Not the easiest or the most natural sport for us to do but we’ve been chipping away at it on and off for years and had a few failed attempts. Today everything finally came together and we got our first pass! Many of the points lost were from the human end of the leash (clearly the human needs extra work), and we were 1 of only 3 teams to qualify.

Thank you to our friends and .magni.sportsdogs helping us run through the exercises. We really appreciate your support!

And thank you also to .malik.comedian for helping us to chip away at the exercises and giving us the confidence to enter again.

We also entered Rally Excellent today but apparently, we used all our efforts and brain power on obedience. We were just over it by the time it was our turn in the rally ring so we decided to withdraw 😅 it’s ok it’ll be our day other day ❤️

We had a big sniffy weekend!

Yesterday we braved the rains at the Hills Dog Club trial and trialed in some of the worst weather we’ve ever had to work in. While I am certain that 90% of Sydney was home in bed and staying warm, we stood in the pouring rain and trialled 😂

They boys did good! Getting passes in excellent exteriors vehicles (Atti) and masters exteriors (Rufus). .the.jackrussellx also handled Atti in his very first masters interiors and although they didn’t quallies, they got the judges award for working together so well as a team even though they don’t usually work together. The judge was so supportive and had really lovely things to say about both of them ❤️

Today Rufus and I entered the very first NW3 trial in NSW. And what an honour it was to be there! 6 searches, short search times, all unknown number of hides and you have to get it all right to get the title. You also don’t know at the end of each search if you have passed or not. No one is allowed to talk about it until the end of the day so you sit the whole day in suspense wondering if you found everything or not 😅

We missed a hide due to Rufus not committing and had a false alert so we didn’t get our title today but we had the best time! Not knowing stressed a few people but I actually found it quite fun. Rufus did an amazing job and we worked so well as a team that I walked away from each search happy with the decisions that we made. I can’t wait to do it again. 🤩

5 years ago we entered our very first dog sport trial with ACSW (2nd photo). It was new, scary and nerve wrecking but everyone at the trial was so kind and supportive. We passed our NW1 that day and it felt like the BEST achievement ever.

A couple of months later we attempted our NW2 but we were not ready so we missed out. The NW trials are an all or nothing game. You need to pass all 5 searches on the day to title. If you miss even one, it’s all over. You can still continue, you just can’t title that day.

Then along came COVID and a bunch of other things that clashed which meant we kept missing out on NW2 trials. Today was finally the day we got to have our second go! 5 years later, but we made it ❤️

Happy Easter 🐣!

We tried this new cafe where the food is fancy but takes way too long. The portions are small and they force you to take a photo before you get to eat! Outrageous!

They were also so understaffed! The same person made our food, served it and took our photo! 🤣

Easter Show Sports Wrap Up 🐰!

The boys did good this week! The Easter show is not the easiest environment but it’s such an honour to be there to showcase the sports we love so much. I hope it inspires people to do more with their dogs!

This year we entered 2 sports, Scentwork and tricks! Rufus walked away with 2 more advance trick passes and a excellent exteriors pass. And Atti got his very first excellent exteriors pass.

We’ll be back tomorrow (Saturday) and Tuesday evening to do a dancing demonstration! Come check us out at the dog arena from 6pm.

The benefits of trick training? Cute photos of course!

We’ve had a handful of new people who have discovered us over the last couple of days so we’d like to introduce ourselves and say hi 👋! Please feel free to tell us about yourself too!

Rufus is the English Springer Spaniel and he’s 9. He’s a show line springer which means he’s taller, has more coat and is less intense than some of the springers who you may see working in the fields or airports. He loves his food and a good sniff. Could not care less about people unless you have something delicious on offer. 🎂🧀🍔🍗

Atticus is the Border Collie who is 15 months. His colour is called Blue Merle and he is often mistaken for an Australian Shepard because of that. He loves attention and can often be found making eyes at strangers to entice them to come and pet him.

And I’m Sharon! The hooman behind this account :)

We live in Sydney, Australia and together, we have fun training for dog sports - Scentwork, tricks, dancing, agility and rally obedience!

One of the reasons we love training tricks is so we can take fun and cute photos. As you can see from the photos the tricks we use the most are putting your paws on something and holding something. Doing this in lots of different places helps to improve your their confidence too!

Rufus is an old pro at this and often he is the one finding things on our walk to perch on for photos 😝

The boys did some awesome sniffy work at Grafton this weekend!

Rufus got his last Masters 🚗 pass for his Vehicle Element title! ❤️ that’s 11 passes across novice, advance, excellent and masters. No luck for us in the other elements but he did some super sniffing work and he still walked away a superstar in my eyes 🤩

And little Atticus! Passed all 4 advance elements with 1st place in interiors and exteriors AND earned his Advance Title! It’s come around quick and I didn’t realise until I counted all the passes we had last week 😱 but I am most happy with him working through a p*e spot in vehicles which was right next to the hide. I tried to get him to search everything else but that spot, leaving it as a last resort but he insisted we headed that way and I’m really glad I trusted him. PEE-TSD is a real thing! And if you have ever had a dog p*e in the ring, you’ll know what I mean. 😅

A big thank you to the Grafton Dog Club for such a fun purple themed trial (everyone wore purple and all the prizes were purple!) and for the welcoming environment you provided all the competitors ❤️ it’s far from home but we love visiting.

The boys did super this weekend at the Tamworth scent trial!

We all did well as a team and I’m super happy with how all the searches went. While Rufus missed 2 of the 4 searches he did, I couldn’t fault him for any of the work he did. They were just unfortunate searches 🤷‍♀️ but the other two he did (Masters 🚗 & 📦) were super and I couldn’t have asked for more ❤️

And little Atti out did himself! This little boy who a few weeks ago didn’t pass his first advance interiors due to inexperience came back this weekend passing advance vehicles (1st place), advance exteriors (3rd place), advance interiors and novice containers. I admit I was a little worried with how much dog p*e there was around and he’s now at this age where he LOVES dog p*e. But when it was time to work he was ready and focused 👀

A big thank you to .sportdog and .pup for being our trial buddies this weekend and for the ongoing training and support we get from them and our other friends. ❤️

Before and after the alert call at the vehicle trial. I love his face in the second photo 🤪

Every time we play the sniffy game together, I am always reminded of how far we’ve come and how much we have learnt together.

For those that don’t know about scent work, Qtips are infused with particular essential oils and hidden in the environment or on cars or inside containers. Your dog needs to use their nose to locate the odour. In the beginning, you start out by locating 1 hide in a small space within a set time. Then as you progress, your dog needs to locate multiple odours and the location of the odours become more complex. On top of that, there also distractions in the form of hidden food and toys. Your dog needs to learn to work though all of that! Then at Masters level, you don’t get told how many hides there are and you have to work with your dog to clear the area and learn how to trust your dog when they tell you that there is nothing there and then being brave enough to tell the judge huh are finished searching.

It sounds simple enough on paper, but when you are in it, it can be complex, stressful and just a little intense😝

Little guy got his Novice Scentwork Title today! His first one 🤩

When I first started scentwork with him the plan was just to take our time and do what he was ready for. But he said he was a border collie and ‘taking our time’ is not a part of his vocabulary. Each time I presented him with a new challenge he happily gave it his all. ❤️ I continue to be impressed with his eagerness and enthusiasm and I can’t wait to see what our Scentwork future holds!
