This past week Zuko and I had a scary reminder of why we work so hard at good apartment building etiquette. Zuko came within inches of being attacked by a dog that was "just playing!!"( per the owner 🙄) and he only reason we avoided a trip to the ER is because we were practicing safe elevator behavior.
Apartment buildings come rife with safety hazards and scary situations for dogs, especially dogs that are already nervous or reactive. By teaching your dog some simple safety behaviors you can avoid or mitigate potentially dangerous situations.
-- Keep your dog close to you, on a short leash (not a flexi-leash!!)
-- Wait for doors to open completely and you can see what's on the other side before allowing your dog to go through
-- Stay back from elevators as they open
-- Keep your dog's focus on you
-- Teach a strong "wait" cue
-- Pay attention to your surroundings

Did you know you can teach your dog #agility from your own home?? For this week's #NewTrickTuesday we're starting out with jumping! I love doing this with Zuko because he's a natural jumper, but almost any dog can have fun with this! Jumping is not only fun, but a good little workout for your pup that helps them build muscles and burn off excess energy. It is incredibly easy to teach with stuff you likely have lying around your house.
For safety, be sure to keep the pole low to the ground to start and gradually build up height as your dog builds strength. Also, the pole should never be heavy or weighed down - you want your dog to be able to knock it over if they bump into it.
Can your dog jump? What other tricks would you like to learn how to do? Let us know in the comments below! #dogtraining #dogagility #tricktraining #forcefreetraining
For those of us who live in apartment buildings, getting our dogs out the door can be a harrowing experience. Aggressive dogs, bikes, children, wheelchairs, delivery people, and more are always lurking around the corner or behind the stairwell door. Fortunately there are simple ways to keep you and your pup safe. Asking for your dog's complete and total attention while you navigate the public areas of your building is a great way to ensure everyone's safety and comfort.
What do you do in the hallways and stairwells of your building? Let us know in the comments. If you're an urbanite and want to learn more about teaching good apartment doggy manners, Wondrous Tails Dog Training can help! DM us with any questions, and don't forget to like and follow!

Had the opportunity to teach wonderful little Penny a "focus" cue! Giving attention to their human handlers is one of the most important skills for a dog to know. If you consistently reward dogs for paying attention to you, they're much more likely to pay attention to you when distracted, unsure, or afraid.
What cue do you use to get your dog to look at you? Let us know in the comments!
