Just an FYI, rescues don’t want your animal. As shocking as it may seem to some, you are not doing us a favour by trying to rehome your unvetted, untrained animal to us, while also complaining about the surrender fee. Until rescues start putting their foot down, the entitlement will continue and people will keep thinking it’s acceptable to fail their animal, easily get rid of them and then get another. Im done with the excuses and the idea that the person’s feelings come first while the animal suffers. We are not the easy way out.

Yes sometimes rehoming IS in the animal’s best interest and I’m not faulting those people. Sadly there are too many who think animals are disposable when they realize they may require a little work or inconvenience. Rescues are there for people and animals that actually need it. It ruins things for those who genuinely need help. There are so many animals losing their lives because of this mindset and it needs to end.

It’s not easy to take in someone’s animal that they did nothing for, then have to provide them with the often thousands of dollars in vetting/training they actually should have received in their care. People are many times rude, entitled and somehow feel WE are the ones responsible for the animal they took in. They take advantage of our love for animals. We get at least 12 rehoming requests for each adoption application. Too many times it’s completely workable, if people only cared to try.

The expectations people have with rescues is crazy. We work so incredibly hard for each animal we take in. A reminder that I am not paid and we are not funded, besides the donations we manage to scrape by on. Many rescues are the same. We make incredible sacrifices to help the animals others fail.

If you can’t provide your animal with the proper care it will need for its entire life. If you’re not willing or able to provide them with vetting and time/cost into training them. If you cant deal with them being living things that p*e, p**p, have behavioural or health issues and require actual work to care for. If becoming pregnant/having a child means the animal goes. DO NOT GET ONE!

An animal is a privilege, not a right!

***BRUCE UPDATE***
A little word we received from Bruce's family June 4th. ❤️
"Morning! Yesterday was Bruce's gottcha 1 year anniversary, so I thought I would forward you an update. He still demands affection and love regularly. He is enjoying our family adventures more and being very respectful while doing so. He's still a little afraid of the dark, but he trusts us to tell him he's safe.
He definitely deserves it! I know everyone says this about their dog, but he's a special dog. There is just something about him. Thank you for all the work you do. The dogs you care for and their owners a lucky to have crossed paths with you."

Bruce really is a special boy and the goodest boy! Can't believe it's been a year! 🥲 Love you always Bruce.

On that note, there has been a lot of backlash about rescues harping about adopt don't shop, and that rescues have TOO MANY OBSTACLES and that we are TOO DEMANDING and have too many restrictions. We do the EXACT same thing that REPUTABLE breeders do.
REGISTERED REPUTABLE BREEDERS take responsibility for the dogs they put out into the world. They also offer health checks and guarantees.

Bob, selling you a puppy out of the back of his truck behind Walmart doesn't care what happens to that dog, he will not take responsibility for this dog once it has left his hands, he doesn't care if you live in an apartment, buy a husky who howls all day because you work 12 hour days, and suddenly you have to re-home your husky because you didn't realize the responsibilities of having a dog, and that your situation was not reasonable for that particular type of dog. We don't want to re-home a dog, who's been through enough re-homing, just to have them re-homed again.

You want a particular breed of puppy? Go to a reputable breeder.

OliDog Rescue

I've been working with rescues for over 25 years. I am not a dog trainer, I am a dog rescuer and rehabilitator.

The last dog to join our pack was delivered by the humane society, with a dog house and at no charge. They were unable to find a rescue who would take this dog and he was now on the kill list, this is when realized there was a strong need for people with the experience to give these dogs a second chance.

A lot of dogs are euthanized because they don't have a place to even have a chance to rehab, especially the larger breeds.

In the last year we've taken on two dogs booked for euthanasia, we are now at full capacity with 6 rescues. Our property is 6 acres, and with a simple building, fencing, and some support, we could do so much more.
