The 4th is almost here!

Please make sure you and your pets are prepared! Remember, the safest place for them on the 4th is INSIDE!

DON'T WAIT! If your pet needs help with anti-anxiety medications for the fireworks contact your vet ASAP 🎆

- Check your yard. It's easy to assume a small hole in the fence would not be enough for a pet to squeeze through but when scared and fleeing, both dogs and cats can manage to break free!

- Make sure that your pets are chipped and the microchip information you have listed is CORRECT! We offer free microchipping and scanning so that you can obtain the chip # and update your information.

- Make sure that you have correct ID Tags and Collars on! Even if that means writing your phone number on the collar.

"If you haven’t already done this, PLEASE DO IT TODAY!! The days surrounding the 4th of July are the time when Animal Control is the busiest. More pets run off due to fireworks than at any other single time of the year.

DO NOT take your pets to see fireworks. Just keep them home. Not only may they be startled and take off, there are just too many people. It’s not safe, even if they aren’t scared of the big booms. They will usually be fine at home alone, if you want to go celebrate our Nation’s birthday."

More dogs are lost over Independence Day than any other time of year. Loud and unexpected noises, excursions to new places, and seeing new people can all contribute to changes in pet behavior, which is why PCAPS sees an influx of pets lost around the Fourth of July every year.

A combination of microchipping and having a collar and tag on your pets at all times is highly recommended. When an Animal Control Officer finds a stray animal with identification, they can immediately contact the owner and take it right home, bypassing the shelter altogether. Your animals can be chipped for free at PCAPS with no appointment needed -- just bring your pet and a photo I.D. during our normal operating hours.

A few other pieces of advice for the holiday:

-Do not take pets to fireworks shows. Leave them safe at home.
-Keep exit doors, gates, and fences secure at all times.
-Make sure your pet’s collar, tags, and microchip information are up to date.
-Take an updated photo to share in case your pet goes missing.
-Keep firecrackers, sparklers, and party/picnic foods out of pets’ reach.

"For those who might consider leaving the windows cracked on a day like today, we ran another little experiment. We cooled the vehicle down to 75, cracked all four windows 2 inches, and took some more measurements. Temps were taken at 1 min, 5 min, 10 min, 15 min, and 20 min. Bottom line - don’t leave anyone or any animal in a vehicle in this weather, for any length of time!"
