Pond top tip 💡

With Christmas 🎄 approaching, now is a good time to be planning for next year.

Maybe, add some pond care items to your Christmas wish list! 🎁 Filtration technology has become very advanced today, so consider upgrading?

Consider that your fish 🐠 will have grown and possibly bred this year, so the existing filter system may be unable to keep up with demand. Also consider an upgrade to your ultraviolet clarifier.

What about little presents to get the pond keeper in your life? ,… water testing kits 🧪 are always needed!

Are you thinking of getting goldfish for your kids this Christmas?

Here’s why you should consider getting tropical fish instead:

🐠 You could keep a fish called a Red-tailed Black Shark like the one pictured depending on the size of your tank. It would live happily with barbs, danios, rainbow fish or tetras, etc
🐠 Many commonly available tropical fish stay small and manageable so you won’t need to buy bigger tanks as goldfish can grow very large.
🐠 With tropical fish, you can keep different species together for a mixture of colourful fish.
🐠 You can keep more small tropical fish in a tank than a couple of goldfish.
🐠 Tropical fishes need a widely available aquarium heater.

Kids now have their own Tetra Academy website to learn how to keep fish https://www.tetraacademy.co.uk/plan-your-fish-tank/

Pond top tip 💡

Now that much of our pond-keeping equipment is indoors to protect from frost damage. It is a good time to service this equipment.

Reputable manufacturers will offer replacement perishable parts such as O-rings or pump impellors.

Quartz sleeves of UV clarifiers can accumulate limescale over the years which will reduce UV penetrance. A replacement sleeve can improve the clarifier’s function significantly.

Fish can suffer from stress, just like us humans. When the cause of the stress is continuous, like harassment from other more aggressive fish, their normal immune functions are hindered which can be dangerous for them.

Common causes of fish stress in aquariums which are important to avoid are:

• Not enough hiding places for timid fish
• Incompatible tank mates with aggression from one species to another
• Overstocking your tank which can cause poor water quality and less oxygen
• Inadequate aquarium size
• Poor nutrition
• Elevated ammonia or nitrate levels (the most common source of stress for goldfish)
• Fluctuations in pH
• Water temperature fluctuations (most common cause of stress in Bettas)

The flame 🔥 tetra (Hyphessobrycon flammeus), also known as the red tetra or Rio tetra, is a colourful addition to a tank.

Due to their shoaling behaviour, they should be kept in groups of more than five fish in a tank with a minimum tank volume of 60L and preferably a minimum length of 60 cm.

The flame tetra likes water to be 22 to 28 °C, pH 5.8–7.8 and hardness dH 5 – 25.

This fish enjoys hiding amongst plants and can be kept in community aquariums due to them being generally peaceful.

Autumn pond tip

Raise the pond pump a foot above the pond bottom, diverting any waterfalls or fountains.

Aeration is not as essential in winter as colder water can hold more dissolved oxygen. Whilst the fish’s need for oxygen is less. Also, vigorous aeration of the water during freezing weather can harm the fish.

Happy Halloween!

The black ghost 👻🔪 knifefish, Apteronotus albifrons, originates from freshwater in South America. Its name derives from tribes in the Amazonian jungle, as it’s said they believe the souls of the dead inhabit these fish!

It does not have any scales and has the fastest electrical discharge in the animal kingdom which it uses to hunt small prey, navigate and communicate with its fellow knifefish!

A specialised organ in its tail contains a small group of cells that can discharge electricity at frequencies approaching 2000 times per second! They are mainly nocturnal and use electrolocation to navigate dark waters.

The black ghost knifefish temperament tends to be semi-aggressive. The best tank mates will be those that thrive in the same water conditions and fish that are medium-sized peaceful fish such as peaceful Cichlids or Catfish. They prefer their own company and become aggressive if kept with their own kind or similar species.

They have a lifespan of 10-15 years and can grow up to around 40cm in a tank. They like water with a pH of 6.0-8.0 and 24-28 degrees centigrade, as they are scaleless they are prone to infections.

Ghost 👻 shrimp (Palaemonetes sp) not only look interesting, but they are also efficient tank cleaners.

They will clear up any uneaten food as well as algae.

They are fascinating, their body is translucent so you can see the inner workings of their body as they process their food.

They are suitable for tanks with small, non-aggressive fish.

Autumn pond top tip 🍂

With the first frosts of the season likely very soon, it’s time for final preparations ready for winter.

Bring inside delicate pond hardware that can become frost-damaged easily. For example, ultraviolet clarifiers are prone to frost damage. Also, lag exposed pipework to prevent excessive chilling of the water.

Pond top tip for autumn 🍂

Feed your fish autumn pond food while water temperatures are above 10˚C then when the water temperature drops below, introduce Tetra Wheatgerm Sticks, along with their existing food.

Your fish will be far less active, so feed much less than was offered in the summer. Always remove any food uneaten after 20 minutes.

Keep offering the fish wheatgerm sticks throughout the winter, if they don’t want the food it can be removed.

Pond maintenance for this month:

🍂 If leaves are allowed to fall into the pond and are not removed this will create a huge biomass of waste that will decay in the pond.

🧪 This will give rise to more nitrate and phosphate nutrients, worsening algae growth next year. The decay of nutrients can lower the dissolved oxygen level in the water. The decaying matter provides a substrate for opportunist pathogens too.

❌ At worst leaves can block filters and pollute the pond to the extent that fish are harmed.

Some tips to manage leaves:
🍂 the pond can be netted over to catch leaf fall
🍂 use a hand net to remove leaves daily
🍂 surface skimmers are available for large ponds
🍂 pond vacuum cleaners can be used to remove leaf fall
