🌩️ Pond Top Tip: Stormy Weather Alert!

Thunderstorms aren’t just noisy — they can affect your pond’s health too.
Here’s why it’s important to check your pond when storms are brewing:

⚠️ Low air pressure during storms can reduce oxygen levels (hypoxia)
🌡️ Warm water holds less oxygen — just when your fish and filter bacteria need more
🔌 Power cuts stop pumps and filters, risking serious harm to your fish

Tip: 👉 Keep a battery-operated air pump or backup power source on hand to protect your pond during unpredictable weather.

Stay storm-smart and keep your fish safe! 💧🐟

Pond top tip 💡

Apart from looking unsightly, overgrowth of algae can cause numerous water quality problems. Algal cells and strands of blanket w**d can clog filters too.

Down at a chemical level, algae cause oxygen and pH levels to be unstable which is stressful for fish.

We need to remove overgrowths of algae and make sure we regularly test our pond’s pH and hardness levels and ensure the pond is maximally aerated during the summer months.

As it’s Friendship Day we’re delving into fish compatibility in tanks.

If you want to build a peaceful freshwater community aquarium, then there are some general guidelines.

🐠 Water Values: Find out the hardness of the tap water in your area. It will be easier to look after fish that thrive in your water conditions. The aquatic life you choose will also need to be able to live in the same temperature and pH range.

🐠 Size: Consider the size the fish will grow to as adults. Most fish are opportunistic when it comes to food, and even relatively peaceful fish may eat other fish if they fit in their mouths.

🐠 Quantity: Boisterous fish like tiger barbs and even certain species of tetras and danios are often better behaved when in large schools. Schooling fish become stressed when kept alone or in a shoal that’s too small. Always buy schooling fish in groups of 6 or more but be careful not to overstock your tank.

🐠 Behaviour: Some fish are prone to nipping other fish’s tails, eating plants, substrate digging and shifting. Some fish that may pair up in the tank can shift from peaceful to highly territorial when breeding. Do you want these pushy parents in your tank?

Do your research, make a stocking plan and discuss this with your local quality aquatics retailer when stocking your tank.

How do you manage the aggression of fish such as Tiger barbs, Barbus tetrazona?

Shoaling fish stay together for safety in numbers. The greater the number of your school, the less aggressive they will be. However this is not a reason to overstock a tank.

🌈 They are a colourful addition to a community tank but should only be kept with other fast-moving fish such as Tetras, Danios and Platys.

🌿 They enjoy a heavily planted aquarium with a temperature of 23-27 ℃ and pH 6-7.

😋 You can keep their colour vivid with a fish food such as Tetra Pro Colour containing a colour concentrate which brings out the red and orange colouring.

Algae growth, toxins, unstable pH and KH values - there are various things that can disturb the peace in your garden pond.

🧪 Make sure to check the seven most important water values weekly with the Tetra Pond Test 7in1.

💧 It gives you the certainty that the water quality is just right for your fish and other pond occupants…or enables you to take countermeasures long before poor
water values can harm your pond fish.

✋ Stop guessing, start testing – with Tetra Pond Test 7in1.

Did you know that fish can not only hear you, but they can also produce sounds for a variety of reasons? 😲

These include signals to predators or competitors, to attract males or as a fright response. There are 4 main ways that fish produce sounds:

🐟 Drumming by using sonic muscles that are located on or near their swim bladder. Interestingly the drumming muscles of the plainfin midshipman are the fastest vertebrate muscles, they can work at about 200Hz at 25˚C. The humming noise made is so loud it really annoys people who live near the coasts where these fish are found.

🐟 Stridulation by striking or rubbing together skeletal components.

🐟 Hydrodynamics by quickly changing speed and direction while swimming.

🐟 Many fish pass air which makes a squeaking sound. When gasping air the weather loach takes it through the intestinal tract and then exhales through the spout-hole (this process explains the squeak sound loaches make when you take them out of water).

Pond top tip 💡

At this time of year, fountains, waterfalls, air pumps, venturis, and any other aeration device must be running maximally, 24/7.

💧 Warm water can hold less dissolved oxygen but fish and filter bacteria demand more.

⚠️ Do NOT rely on so-called oxygenating w**d as this will only supply oxygen in the day.

👉 We would love to see how your pond is looking.
