Pond top tip 💡

The fish in garden ponds are easy targets for predators such as herons, mink, and in more recent times, otters!

These predators can range farther to find food in the winter and pond fish are easy targets.

Netting ponds to protect fish is important. Stake a length of wire at approximately 1 ft high around the pond to make fishing difficult for wading predators, like herons.

Do herons visit your pond?

Angelfish’s scientific name is Pterophyllum scalare, ptero is Greek for wing and phyll is Greek for leaf. The name then refers to the leaf-like large fins.

The Festive 🎄 Cichlid, Mesonauta festivus, originates from South America and, believe it or not, has been found alongside freshwater Angelfish.

They are for advanced fishkeepers as they are a timid and relatively peaceful species that should be housed in aquariums 3ft long or more.

The Festive Cichlid likes plenty of hiding places amongst robust plants and bogwood.

It grows to a maximum size of 15cm and will acclimatise to a wide range of conditions: pH: 5.5-7.5, dH: up to 18°C. It likes a temperature of 24-30°C.

Due to its size, it should not be kept with small fish like Neon Tetras.

The Rummy-nose tetra reminds us of a certain reindeer that will be visiting on Christmas Eve! 🦌

They’re also a great addition to a tropical community tank.

Hemigrammus rhodostomus grows up to 5cm on average and should be kept in groups of no less than six, preferring an 80-litre aquarium.

The water should be 24°C to 31°C, although temperatures up to 33 °C are sometimes required for breeding. Therefore, they are best kept with other species that like warmer temperatures such as smaller gourami, tetras, barbs, Australian rainbows, and various catfish, such as Ancistrus.

Rummy-nose tetra like soft, acidic water (hardness no higher than 6° dH) and a pH of 5.6 to 7.4.

No need to feel unlucky ☘️ this Friday 13th if you keep fish in your house!

🐠 In China, where fishkeeping originated, it’s believed keeping fish brings good luck to your household.

🐠 Goldfish are one of the top fish that are kept in an aquarium to bring positivity according to superstitions.

🐠 Keeping two goldfish is said to bring harmony to your relationship. Goldfish are social animals and suffer stress when kept on their own.

🐠 In fact, it's illegal to keep a goldfish on its own in Switzerland!

Do you decorate your fish tank at Christmas? ⛄️ We’d love to see your photos! 📷

It’s essential to only use decorations that are safe for the inside of your tank and purchased from a reputable aquatics retailer. Certain ornaments’ paints and materials can be toxic to fish ⚠️

Alternatively, have fun decorating the outside of your tank. Make sure mains powered lights cannot fall into the water.

Thank you to on Instagram for the photo of their tank.
