Sorry up front about the tangent but it needs addressed! There was a comment on a post from someone saying how rescues "make huge profits off the dogs" we take in. This is so outrageous I can't just let it go. So let me just share a snapshot of the last 10 dogs we took in:
3 needed dentals, shots, spay/nueter, and chip. $1k each (one paid by her foster to adopt)
1 needed nueter, dental, shots and chip $326 for an amazing alternate vet
1 needed major jaw surgery, nueter, shots and chip. $1k (covered by the amazing Stella's)
2 needed nueter, shots, and chip $300 each
2 needed spay, shots, and chip $325 each
1 needed no vet care
Total- $3576
Out of these 2 were adopted at $200 each as seniors. 2 were adopted out at $350 each. The rest are still waiting for their forever homes so we have taken in $1100 for these adoptions. And IF they all get adopted ($200 for each of the 5 seniors and 4 adult regular adoptions (one of the seniors was the one the foster to adopt paid the care on)) that will be a total of $2550. So that leaves what? Over a $1k that we just lose!!!
The ignorance needs to stop. Rescues drown in debt for fees they pay out of our own pockets. There are some donations that come in and thank God for that! This snapshot is very much the norm for the dogs we take in. It is EXTREMELY rare to get dogs that need very little vet care. Last year we were $3k over what we took in on donations and adoption fees just for the vet care not including food and supplies. This year will be significantly higher. If you can't afford the adoption fee then financially you're not in a place for a dog. It doesn't mean you're a bad pet parent. It's fine to just scroll on by but STOP bashing the rescues. All of us are drowning in debt, animals, and overall awful doing what the majority of the population refuses to do anything about.
