hey farm friends, its been a while since we posted. All is well on the farm and we are still doing all the farm things. Our business model has had to change though over the past few months, with the rise in the cost of... well everything, but mostly gas, deliveries are sporadic and only happening when we already have to go places, (being a stay at home, home school family that doesn't happen very frequently). We still have eggs, we still have chickens and turkeys, so if you would like to remain on our random delivery schedule let us know but if the inconsistencies are inconvenient we fully understand that too!

Here are some photos of our recent apple harvests, there are still more on the tree! This tree has been on our property longer than we have, when it's time to make apples it doesn't mess around! Go big or go home!

Hay farm friends, If you are tracking this years strain of bird flu you will notice there are confirmed cases in roy and yelm. (Towns very close to us here in rainier)
We are doing everything in our power to protect our flocks. At this time we are asking anyone who visits our farm please sanitize their shoes. (I have a bottle of spray by the door) We will not be having helpers (besides ours family that lives here) when it comes to feeding/chore time. We will be following all of the states guidelines to prevent exposure to our flock as much as is possible.
We will keep everyone updated about our farm if we have anything to update but right now we are sticking with the motto "cautious not anxious"

Hay farm friends!

In case I missed telling anyone in person egg deliveries for November are going to be few and far between. We have to have enough eggs to make it worth the drive and the ladies just aren't keeping up with that for even our every other week schedule. We will most likely be doing one delivery the week of Thanksgiving. We will keep you all posted :) thank you for being understanding during this natural time of rest for our Lady birds

Hey farm friends! Happy fall!! With the start of fall the ladies lay less and less naturally. For October we will be going back to our fall delivery schedule of every other week. That means no deliveries next week but there will be the week after. We hope you are all enjoying fall!!

13/09/2021

Hey farm friends! This weeks deliveries will be on Tuesday not Monday :) thank you!

Hey farm friends, with the predicted heat wave we expect a massive decline in egg production. We will keep everyone posted how this will impact egg deliveries. We hope everyone stays cool and safe over the hot weekend!

Hay farm friends I learned something new today: did you know egg yolks can be white? I didn't until today. We have gotten all different shades of yellow to orange and I find it fascinating because all our birds are fed the same thing. This article doesn't really mention the genetic reasons that can also come in to play (different breeds will often have different colored yolks even when given the same diet)

https://www.myrecipes.com/general/ingredients/why-is-my-egg-yolk-white #:~:text=Coming%20across%20a%20white%20yolk%20is%20perfectly%20natural%2C,plant%20make%20their%20way%20into%20the%20egg%20yolks

We're talking ghostly pale.

Let's talk about egg color! Specifically "blue" eggs. Our blue eggs come from "easter Eggers". But what is an Easter egger? Well, they are any chicken breed with a blue egg gene. For our chickens that means they are mostly Araucanas. Their blue egg genetics can be traces back to South America. Over the last few year we have played with the genetics of our flock to get the colors known as "blue" "mint" "light olive" "dark olive" and "olive with speckles" . Ok so we talked about blue but what are those other colors? They are different cross breeds with the Araucanas. For example when you cross an Araucana and a black French copper marans (the darkest brown layers we have) you get a dark dark almost brown green known as olive. But if you breed an Araucana to a barred rock (our lightest brown layers) you get a color called mint. Now this is all a simplified version as with all genetics there are multiple possible outcomes, (anyone remember punnett squares from biology) all this to say; we have really enjoyed playing with the colors and combinations. These photos are of our eggs today. They are in different lighting and different settings to try and convey color as accurately as I can. That being said the difference is more striking in person, and most obvious when the eggs are wet.

In order we have true blue, mint, light olive, dark olive, and olive with speckles.

There is also a very light brown egg pictured to try and show the difference .
