Summer is here, and that means the heat is too.
As chinchilla owners, we know just how dangerous this can be for our pets, so we wanted to share some important tips on our website.
Chinchillas need to be kept in consistently low temperatures, not just for their comfort, but for their survival. While some pet owners claim their pets do "just fine" in warmer situations, mere survival in inappropriate conditions doesn't mean it's right—it means they've been lucky, and those pets are struggling in silence.
In their natural habitat, the Andes Mountains, Chinchillas sleep in caves and rock crevices during the day to escape the heat then come out at dusk till dawn when it's cooler. The ideal temperature range for domestic chinchillas is between 65-70 degrees Fahrenheit. Once you exceed 75 degrees, chinchillas begin to feel uncomfortable. At 80 degrees, there is a higher risk of heat exhaustion and stroke. When this occurs, death isn't the worst scenario; animals who suffer from heat stroke may no longer be able to walk, eat, drink, or maintain themselves properly.
When we live in areas that are not normally suitable for chinchillas, we have a responsibility to provide consistent air conditioning to maintain suitable temperatures.

The purple really was just from his topical ointment, Blu Kote. It's commonly used by breeders and rescues to disinfect wounds until a vet can be found and other medical steps can be taken. Grumpy chewed himself so badly that he had several abscesses that needed to be surgically drained. His infections kept getting worse because he kept chewing the itchy scabs... and so Chinchilla emergency cones were born! 🫶🥹

I have the most beautiful job sometimes. Luffa / Loofah isn't the most profitable item but it's one that brings me so much peace making. I love dying it. I really should consider doing some tie-dye hobbies for fun 🥹 Anyway, I'm working on restocking some of my loofah on the website. 🫶

I just wanted to show a little of the process behind the scenes. I'm working on a batch of unbleached heirloom loofah, that's naturally dyed and flavored using hibiscus flowers.
I chose NOT to rinse this batch so the fine hibiscus pulp would stick to the fibers.
My Loofah is made in small batches, usually 300 pieces and under, and usually I only do this in the summer months but I wanted to make it because it's Odin's FAVORITE.
It'll be added to the website when it's all dry and ready, along with a micro restock of fleece goods.

I keep my cages pretty simple and you should too.
I've had HUGE elaborate cages in the past, but they had too many fall hazards and we're a real PITA to maintain. I spot clean regularly and do a full clean every week. I deep clean my cages in the Spring / Summer ( take them outside to hose down ).
Now, I stick to Ferret or Critter Nation cages. 3 or less can live in a single unit. 4 or more get a double unit. Personally I feel it's harder to maintain cleanliness with 4 or more in a single unit. A single unit is 25" deep, 25" tall, and 36" wide. Any cage that follows that closely would be suitable. This allows for ample floor space for bedding and hopping. It also allows some height for ledges while also keeping the fall risk low. Tall cages are NOT a chinchillas friend - They're not climbers they're hoppers.
I use metal pans from bass equipment . com instead of the plastic pans. Covers just don't make sense when I have so many chins. We use Kiln Dried Pine Shavings for bedding instead, which is what rescues & breeders use.
My metal ledges were from Chinnie Boutique and have since been discontinued. Pandamonium Pets makes metal ledges though! I like metal ledges for cleaning ease, but Kiln Dried Pine ledges are great too. NO PLASTICS.

DIY for Chinchilla owners 💕
Chinchillas should be called chewchillas because they chew so much, and they must! Your pets teeth are ever-growing and not providing roughage like a quality pellet, hay, and chew sources can lead to the misalignment and overgrowth of their teeth! This is called malocclusion, which is often a genetic predisposition, but can be influenced by poor care too. Once diagnosed, Chinchillas often do not recover.
So please, provide a quality diet and lots of chews. You can even make your own permitting you have a healthy source of wood, like Apple, Grape Vine, or Kiwi that has never been treated with pesticides.
There are many more options too, but we can't list them all here. Please be cautious, because there are many types of wood that can be fatal for your pet too.
Apple wood is the most common and popular wood for Chinchillas. Avoid citrus wood, and hardwoods too.
Why do you have to clean the wood well?
Chinchillas are INDOOR pets who are captive bred as domestic animals. They're so far removed from their wild cousins that their bacterial gut flora is not equipped to handle contaminated wood from outside. Insects and wildlife can leave behind urine, poop, eggs, and parasites our pets bodies are not able to defend against. You definitely don't want your pet chinchilla to have internal worms or be infested with mites, and you wouldn't want them to consume pollution that settles on the wood.
so, we clean it just like we would clean any food we bring in from our gardens we would put in our mouths as a precaution. 🙂

I've had some of these chins for over a decade and half the time they don't even startle to a new sound.

What type of hay does a Chinchilla eat?
The most common hay is Timothy hay. Timothy hay comes in 3 cuts. It should be green.
- First cut, which is very coarse stemmed and has a lot of heads. This cut is full of fiber!
- �Second cut,� Which is a mix of softer and firm, leafy hay ( most popular & common )
- Third cut, is very soft and leafy and best for picky eaters.
There is also Alfalfa Hay which is sweeter and rich in nutrients. It's best for young / growing animals, or for malnourished animals. It can be offered occasionally to adults as a treat, but should not be their staple hay. It is bright green and fresh smelling.
Orchard Grass is a high fiber, leafy hay. Sometimes a mix of Timothy, Garrison, and Alfalfa. It's a good alternative to Timothy. Green and bright in color.
Oat Hay is a hard, stem filled hay that is tough and yellow/pale in color. It comes with Oat heads, so should be fed sparingly.
Blue Grass Hay is another leafy hay option.
Botanical Hay is generally Timothy hay with herbs mixed in.
