As veterinary professionals, veterinarians and veterinary technologists are required to complete a certain amount of Continuing Education hours every 2 years.

By completing these Continuing Education hours, we are often learning about new advancements in veterinary medicine or new studies that have been done on things we did know.
Sometimes it’s as simple as a refresher as there is a large amount of information surrounding our line of work.

This ultimately helps us provide the best care to your pets by taking new things we’ve learned and implementing them where we feel appropriate.

One of our technologists recently watched a webinar on ticks, the diseases they spread, how it affects your pets and why routine testing is important.

One great thing about working in veterinary medicine is that there’s always something new to learn.

“Please don’t eat the yard mushrooms friends! They made me feel very sick!”

Luna ate some mystery mushrooms in her yard the other night. 🍄 🤮

In a very short amount of time she became very drooly, shakey and started to have some diarrhea. Thankfully she vomited up the mushrooms and her mom contacted her Veterinarian as soon as she noticed something was wrong.

It can be very scary to pet parents when our pets act sick so suddenly.
Whether it’s illness or they’ve ingested a potential toxin.
The best thing you can do is contact your veterinarian!

Some signs your pet may have eaten a toxin may include one or more symptoms including but not limited to;
Vomiting
Drooling
Tremors
Seizure
Diarrhea
Lethargy
Collapse
Death

If you ever have any concerns of your pet, please contact your veterinarian asap as emergent medical intervention may be required!

Thankfully Luna is doing just fine!

Have you struggled with an itchy pet?

August is Itchy Pet Awareness Month so we wanted to talk about one of our staffs pets who struggled with chronic itchiness.

Penny came to us several years ago with severe allergies. This poor girl was so itchy she could barely enjoy life because all she wanted to do was scratch herself raw.
This left her with a very patchy hair coat and flaky, smelly, ye**ty skin.

One of our Technologists took her in as a foster and we tried a variety of things to try and help this sweet girl.

Strict food trials were done, removing meat protein to start as that is often the leading cause of most allergies in dogs.
Different anti-itch medications were tested.
Until finally after about 4 months we found a combination to reduce her itching and Increase her quality of life!

Penny was diagnosed with environmental allergies.
She ended up thriving with daily to every other day medication, medicated baths and cytopoint injections during her flare ups.
Her biggest flares were often the summer and fall seasons.

After her magical combination was found and her coat grew in nice and fluffy, her foster mom took her to the park to get some “adopt me” photos to share.
It was there she realized she couldn’t let this dog go, and ultimately foster failed in the best way!

Penny was able to have another four years of life with minimal itching compared to when she first came to us.
She was able to enjoy many snuggles with her adopted family and lots of naps in the sunshine in her final years.

Allergies can be a very frustrating condition to deal with in pets. Most allergy pets take much longer than a couple months to figure out. If food/medication trials aren’t followed strictly you have to restart the whole process over again which can be very frustrating and expensive.

With our allergy patients it takes a lot of time, patience and often life long medication to help keep them comfortable.

There has been a lot of confusion in the last few weeks in regards the CDC’s New Rules for bringing dogs into the US to be implemented on August 1 2024.

Here’s the most recent update as of July 22 2024 for dogs coming from a Rabies free/low risk county. (Canada is listed in this category!)

- CDC Dog Import form must be filled out by whoever is bringing the dog to the U.S.
- The dog must appear healthy upon arrival
- The dog must be at least 6 months of age
- The dog must have a microchip that is detectable by a universal scanner
- Rabies vaccine certificate for re-enter to Canada

This information still has the potential to change before August 1st 2024, so please make sure you check the CDC website and follow the instructions there before you plan to travel.

If your pet has been in a high risk rabies country within 6 months prior to crossing the USA border please see the CDC website for more information.

For more information on traveling from Canada (or other rabies free/low risk countries)

Help us give a huge congratulations to our newest technologist Nicol for not only passing the Veterinary Technologist program at Red River College this year but also for passing her National Exam the VTNE over the weekend! 🎉

Did you know that our RVTs must pass a National Exam after college too?

Nicol was with us as a Veterinary Assistant back in 2021 before starting the Technologist program. We’re so happy to have her back and to see her new skills shine as a technologist!

One of Nicol’s favourite things to do as a Registered Veterinary Technologist is collecting blood samples and doing bloodwork!

Today is National Pet Fire Safety Day! 🔥
Here’s 4 Quick tips!

Did you know that pets cause OVER 1000 fires a year?!

Stoves, cooktops, electrical cords and space heaters are the main accomplices in pet started fires. Keep pets out of kitchens even when you’re not cooking and make sure electrical cords are out of reach.

Window clings with pet information can be placed on multiple windows and doors in case of emergency. This alerts firefighters that there are pets in your home and need assistance in case of fire.
These can sometimes be found at your local pet shelters, fire stations or online.

The best thing you can do for your pets is include them in your family fire safety plan. Practice with your family what you would do in case of a fire when you are in the home and make sure to include your pets.

Ticks are sneaky creatures that will often hide where you won’t see them!
When you’re doing frequent tick checks make sure to check EVERY inch of your pet!

These ticks were found while shaving for a neuter but could have been easily missed during a routine tick check especially if your pet has very long thick fluffy hair

If your pet is on tick prevention, most of the time the ticks will just die and fall off on their own, however we do still recommend doing routine checks just incase any dead ticks are left behind.

29/05/2024

Screening for heartworm disease involves a small blood draw. The sample is processed in clinic and placed in a device that tells us if there has been any exposure to heartworm disease, as well as Lyme disease and two other tick borne diseases.
This is recommended to be done yearly, at the very least, every 2 years.

If we get a test that says positive for heartworm exposure, we take that sample and look at it under the microscope. This will show us microfilaria, the heartworm larvae, swimming through your pets blood cells.

Treatment for heartworm a very complex and expensive procedure. It involves several hospital stays, kennel rest for months to ensure strict rest and the protocol must be followed EXACTLY without any interruptions or delays to ensure all the heartworms are treated.
This process can take up to 6 months or longer and your pet will still be at risk of being reinfected if prevention is not followed correctly.

To avoid having to treat heartworm disease we recommend having your dogs on heartworm prevention and following the directions given by your veterinarian!

Welcome to part two of our heartworm disease talk!

Today we are going to talk about prevention.
As mentioned before in Manitoba, heartworm prevention starts on June 1 and continues every month on the first of the month until November 1.

You might be wondering why we start prevention in June when mosquitoes are already out.
The reasoning for that is because the mosquito has to bite an infected animal and then incubate for approximately 3 weeks before it can infect another animal.

The way that the heartworm prevention works is that it kills any heartworm larvae that was introduced to the dogs body a month prior.
Which is also why we do our last dose of November once mosquitoes are gone because it covers your pet from anything they were exposed to in October.

If this prevention protocol is not followed correctly, your pet is at higher risk of getting heartworm disease. If you skip your November dose, your dog can easily have mature, adult heartworm, infesting your pet’s bloodstream.

If you have outdoor cats, they also run the risk of getting infected.

27/05/2024

With Heartworm season approaching we thought it would be the best time to talk a little more about it! Over the next few days we will share different aspects of it.

Heartworm disease is spread through mosquitos. Which are already out and about!

The mosquitos spread heartworm larvae from one bite! These worms can grow and multiply within the body, its name was rightly given as they are known to be found within the heart and bloodstream.
Dogs are the favorite host to these parasites, however cats can also become infected just not commonly to the same degree.

Stay tuned to find out why we start our preventative medication in June!
