A busy day today! This morning I worked with 8-month old Banjo. He was in my puppy classes and did extraordinarily well. Unfortunately a few weeks ago his behaviour changed and he became snappy which is most unlike him as he’s intrinsically a lovely sweet natured dog. I suggested the vet because it did sound possibly pain related. Poor little dog has a genetic condition which caused quite extreme pain in one of his back legs. He had successful surgery but he had to be crated for some weeks. The owners have been diligent and so kind to this pup and his recovery has been great and complete. No sooner is he out and about again and he got stung by a wasp THREE TIMES! So he has become tricky to handle in certain situations and is on steroids which probably doesn’t help. Today I went to do an SOS training session with him and he did so well, dear little soul. We introduced him to a carrot 🥕 which I think will be something he really enjoys. We did a tug game with him (always letting him win for now) and he showed me how very clever he is with his food toy! We discussed his resource guarding (what to do and what not to do), how to deal with people who go up to him and frighten him without realising it and lots of strategies to help him feel safe and secure. His owners are extremely good with him but the memories of the pain he has suffered in such a short life to date will take a long time to dissipate, if ever. There is ALWAYS a reason for a change in a dog’s behaviour and I’m pretty sure we got to the root of the problems today.

Siri the Wonderdog!
Good morning everybody. Tomorrow I shall be having an operation so won’t be doing any training until next week when I have 5 classes. Things will return to normal very quickly I hope. In the meantime I am ALWAYS available on the phone, by Whatsapp, Messenger and text (except when I’m under the knife 🤣) for any issues or help you may need (and it’s free of course!) So please do not hesitate to contact me if you need to. I’m looking forward to kicking off with a couple of new clients in a week or so. Life goes on….video just to show Siri on lead with our grandson yesterday 😊 #leadpullingtips #dogtrainingoutandabout #dogsinthenewforest #recall #goldenretriever #dogtrainingthreeleggedcross

The training today is our dogs (and our friend’s spaniel whom we’re looking after for a couple of weeks).
Here’s a couple of videos of this morning’s fun which always includes training. Every walk, every day includes “training”, but for the dogs it’s all play, as training for us MUST be play for the dogs. Why else would the dogs want to do what we ask them to do? The five finger rule: What’s in it for me?
Loose lead walking - if he doesn’t look at you when you’re stationary then he definitely won’t look at you when you’re both moving! If he’s looking at you when he’s on the lead he physically cannot pull at the same time. “Connection” (aka eye contact) is the absolute central issue in dog training which is why I always teach my owners to praise and reward with treats.
So here in these videos you’ll see all 3 dogs on the whistle recall and in another video the less experienced spaniel following the more experienced gundog in “hunting” mode. The retriever is quite simply a distraction whom they ignore! There’s a bit of loose lead walking and the visiting spaniel loving a muddy puddle!
A lovely walk in the sunshine - unlike poor Paris… ☔️ 🌧️ 💦

Peppa the rescue Springer
This is an interesting example of how a particular breed of dog displays her natural instincts through generations of breeding. If you turn on the sound you will hear my commentary which explains this hunting behaviour with Peppa the Springer Spaniel.
When looking for a puppy to join your family it’s important to do your research and look into the various breeds and the behaviour they’re likely to display according to what they were bred for. I see quite a bit of this in my work - some good 👍 some not so good 😢

This time last year we were sharing our world with these little beauties. Thank you Siri, my golden girl ❤️
This is 13-week old Evie, the Staffordshire Bull Terrier. She’s a confident lively little dog and is just starting to learn about the wonders and excitement of the outside world. Our session today was our first training session out in the park. There were a few dogs and people around (unfortunately quite a few out of control dogs and off lead) and she coped very well, returning to Mark and Khris and learning that pulling on the lead wasn’t going to get her anywhere quickly. We sat for a while on a bench and she was very good, just watching everything and taking in her surroundings without becoming excited. Her owners are really enjoying their pup (with the occasional and inevitable blip!). The next session will be in the town centre to expand her range of experiences - she is confident in everything she does so is ready to be exposed to various distractions such as traffic and the business of the town centre. She’s a credit to her owners.
