How Hidden Barn Dog Grub came to be...

In 2007, too many pets and pet owners in the US became the sad victims of a pet food crisis that exposed many manufacturers of commercial dog food for their use of contaminated and substandard ingredients. I investigated different brands, different levels of acceptable “bad” ingredients that were allowable and came to the conclusion that there were so few dog food companies that were untouched by the crisis. I also found it especially disturbing that dog food companies who were making "premium” dog food and prescription food were just a guilty as the grocery store and big box store varieties.

After the let down by the big dog food makers, my eyes were opened to the "not safe for human consumption" list of ingredients in almost all commercial kibble and canned food. I decided to start making a well-balanced, nutritional and preservative-free dog food that was fit for a human. I did a lot of research and spoke to our vet while we were developing the Hidden Barn Dog Grub recipes. My vet shared with me that most vets receive very little training in nutrition and are wooed by the big dog food companies in the form of scholarships, etc, so that the dog food manufacturers can secure product placement in the practices and offices of veterinarians. I’m not saying that I know more than a vet, but I am saying that sometimes common sense and good whole and wholesome food is better than chemically extruded food found to contain poisons like drugs used in the euthanizing of pets and worse.
