Kai is in need of emergency placement due to behavioral concerns. Kai is highly reactive to strangers and other dogs, making it difficult to house and walk him safely. Medically, apparently healthy.
Kai arrived at the care center from a previous home. He is reported to hard bark when strangers approach the home. He remains tense and anxious in the presence of handlers in the care center and has been observed to lunge and hard bark toward strangers and other dogs. He may succeed the best outside of a shelter environment and should be placed in an experienced, adult-only home under the guidance of an ACC-approved rescue partner.
ASSESSMENT NOTES
Date of assessment:: 9/19/2022
Summary:: Due to reports of hard barking at people, and remaining tense and anxious around handlers, Kai is not a candidate for a handling assessment.
Summary (1):: According to Kai's previous owner, he is tolerant of other dogs.
9/20/22: Kai is not collared at this time due to handling sensitivity. While on-leash at the Care Center, Kai is introduced to a novel female dog. He sniffs her, wags a neutral tail and huffs once before walking away.
Summary (2):: 9/23: When the handler approaches, Kai is laying at the front of the kennel. The handler speaks to Kai with a soft voice and he stands with a soft body. He gently takes cheese from the handler with a soft mouth when offered, then allows the handler to easily leash him. Once out of the kennel, he walks without tension on the leash and his tail begins to wag with a low sweep. He pulls mildly to sniff when outside and checks in with the handler regularly. As pedestrians pass at a distance, Kai watches them but the handler has no issue refocusing him by speaking to him with a soft voice and/or treats. Kai relieves himself as needed. The handler is easily able to return him to his kennel.
9/22: Kai is laying near the front of the kennel with a neutral body when the handler approaches. He stands to greet the handler and is easily leashed. The handler is able to lead Kai out of the kennel without issue. Kai walks with a loose leash and a soft body. Once outside, he watches pedestrians passing at a distance. He relieves himself as needed and occasionally checks in with the handler. As the handler leads him back to the Care Center, Kai pulls hard to go to the play yard. The handler is able to run him back into the building. Once inside he returns to the kennel without issue.
9/21: When the handler approaches, Kai is standing at the front of the kennel with a neutral body. The handler offers him ham which he takes with a soft mouth. Kai is easily leashed and walks out of the kennel without issue. He pulls mildly to leave the building and relieves himself once outside. He walks with a soft body, keeping the leash loose for the majority of the walk. Kai stiffens slightly when he sees another dog, but is easily redirected by the handler when spoken to in a soft voice. His body becomes soft once he is refocused. When returning to the building, Kai pulls moderately to enter the play yard. The handler is able to refocus him using ham, and he walks alongside the handler back inside the building. Kai is returned to the kennel without issue.
Summary (3):: 9/19: Kai comes to the front when he sees a handler and begins vocalizing. He stops when offered cheese and takes it with a soft mouth. Kai is easily leashed and pulls hard out of the building. Kai immediately relieves himself and continues on the walk. He sees a stranger cleaning the sidewalk and Kai becomes reactive. The handler is able to walk him away and he continues on the walk. On the way back to the building, Kai sees another dog/handler pair and becomes reactive again. As Kai renters the building he begins hard barking at another handler. He returns to his kennel without further issue.
9/18: Kai is lying down in his kennel when approached. He jumps up and comes to the front when he sees a handler and begins to bark hard. he does not take liver treats or jerky but shows mild interest in salami but ignores chicken. The handler tosses more salami and he begins to eat them as the kennel is unlocked. Kai is easily leashed and pulls hard out of the room. He begins to hard bark and reaches around the handler to get closer to a staff member he passes in the hallway. The handler walks faster and he briefly settles once the other staff member is out of sight. Once outside, he relieves himself and continues on the walk. Kai zig zags under the handler's feet as he explores scents but then stiffens, growls, and hard barks when he sees another dog/handler pair across the street. The handler continues walking and Kai shakes off once he can no longer see the other pair. A car slows for a bystander to ask the handler a question. When Kai sees the bystander he begins hard barking at them. The handler continues to walk Kai away from the car but the bystander continues to call the handler. Due to Kai's reactivity, the handler places him behind a parked van until the car with the bystander drives away and other dogs/handler pairs pass before Kai could see them. He continues to bark and pace behind the van. Once clear, the handler immediately brings Kai back to his kennel without further issue.
9/17: Kai is laying at the back of the kennel, hard barking when the handler approaches. He takes treats from the handler and comes to the front of the kennel, barking less. He continues to take treats and toe taps/pants anxiously as the handler unlocks the kennel door. He allows handler to leash him in one easy motion and he pushes the door open with his nose, pulling hard as he exits the kennel. As he enters the hallway Kai becomes fixated on a staff member down the hall and hard barks at them. He is redirected, pulling mild-moderately to the play yard. Once in the play yard, he paces with a tense body. Kai paws at the door as he seeks an exit. He relieves himself as needed. Kai is guided back inside and walked into a larger kennel in room 9 to give him more space. He hesitates in front of the room door, but re-enters without issue
