When we get a dog, what most of us expect is a happy, playful puppy that brings joy and laughter to a family. But this awesome story didn’t start with rainbows and unicorns. Although the beginning was tough and arduous, it had a happy, heart-warming ending, which lead to a revolution in the dog food industry in Indonesia.
This is the story of Bianca and her puppy Balu. The day Bianca opened her home and her heart to Balu, her life changed forever. The little Great Dane pup was supposed to be happy, playful and active, and grow into a strong, tall, majestic Great Dane. Unfortunately, this wasn’t the case with Balu. By the time he was 4 months old, all kinds of problems started to appear. Problems Bianca didn’t think she would have to face. Balu had severe allergies and skin problems that lead to open wounds and scabs all over his whole body. He also had hip dysplasia where his hips didn’t sit in the socket properly. Each movement seemed to hurt him; he couldn’t play, run or jump, and he was scared all the time. At this point, Bianca realised that she had a pup with serious disabilities.
Often, people decide to give away handicapped puppies; this wasn’t the case with Bianca. She supported Balu every step of the way. After a year of trying to find out what was wrong with him, and getting no clear answers from the vets in Bali, she sent his blood work to the UK for an allergy test. When the results finally came, Bianca was surprised to find out that Balu was allergic to common ingredient found in almost every kibble. That included rice, corn, soy, oats, peas, potatoes. Usually, on the bottom of an allergy test, you will find a vet recommended diet. In Balu’s case, his recommend diet suggestion was: ‘none’.
Desperate and having almost no other option, Bianca took to Google and searched for dog food alternatives. This is when she first came across raw dog food. If you were to look up ‘raw food’ on Google six years ago, the results would be totally different from now. Bianca’s search resulted in finding horrifying articles such as ‘Dog dies from salmonella poisoning’ or ‘Dog dies after consuming raw food’. Making the situation even more frustrating. There was such limited information on the subject of raw food that Bianca thought that her only option would be to just try it.
