A few tears, as I officially say goodbye to my baby. Raised this pup on my own, with the help of Toby, Spencer, Rusty, Cooper, Chester, and a very special, patient, loving hubby. Hey Friends, Writer Rebecca here! Happy New Year! Hope everyone is doing well. It’s been a little over a month since dbf retirement day, and my journey has been amazing. I have a few new pieces that were released in various places in January, and have more coming out in the next few months. Including an anthology featuring a poem about Cooper. 💛 So that’s me. For you guys, I wanted to pass on that I recommend in RB, for puppy training, and in Culver City for puppy training, and everything else. 🦮 I’m not checking this space regularly, so if you have a need, please do not DM me here. 5/1/2011 - 10/22/2022🌈 We said Goodbye to Tucker today. His body was failing him. It’s hard to describe what a special dog Tucker was. He was the most communicative expressive soul, unique from the moment we made eye contact when he was 8 weeks old. He was himself from day 1, and made sure you knew what he wanted. King of the side-eye when he was feeling sassy. A breeze to train, understood me and everything I was thinking completely. Tucker made so many friends; humans and dogs, and impacted so many peoples lives. He was a natural neutral with my client dogs, perfect teacher with puppies, things that I can take 0 credit for.. it was just his nature. He loved meeting friends for lunch and being surrounded by people, always scanning for a new friend to make eye contact with and ask for attention (or food. hopefully food). I’m unbelievably grateful for how many adventures and trips we got to share over his 11 years. From beaches, deserts, mountains, road trips, camping, hotels, airbnbs, national parks, even Disneyland. No amount of time with him would ever have been enough.

Tip Tuesday: Walking your Reactive Dog.

Dogs are continuously reacting and responding to things in their environment. The term “reactivity” is often associated with dogs reacting in a way that we humans may find extreme, such as barking, growling, or lunging.

If this is your dog? Here are a few tips to help you on your walks.

👟 Wear comfortable shoes closed-toed shoes (make sure they are tied).

🦮 Make sure your dog's walking equipment is appropriately sized to prevent them from slipping out.

⏰ Avoid peek walking hours. Try to choose times of the day where they can avoid running into the thing that causes them to react.

✋ Keep your distance. If you do not need to be close to the thing that your dog reacts to then more distance is better. For example, if your dog growls at people, if you see a person approaching, cross the street, or go another direction.

🚗 Find barriers to put between you. For example, if your dog barks at other dogs, when you see a dog approaching walk behind a car, so there is a visual barrier for your dog. When the other dog passes continue with your walk.

👃Take lots of sniff breaks, they can help de-stress after some excitement and are really rewarding for most dogs.

🥩 Bring your high-value rewards with you on your walks, reinforce your dog for walking nicely on a leash, and any other good behavior. Having high-value treats can help you keep your dog focused on you rather than the thing they may react to.

🐕 Teach your dog to wear a muzzle. A muzzle can be a great tool to prevent bites from occurring incase your walk has some unplanned events. Depending on the severity of your dog's reactivity it may help you feel more comfortable taking your dog out in public as well.

The tips above are just that, tips. If your dog is reactive, please seek help from a professional science-based, positive reinforcement-based trainer for ways to help modify your dogs behavior. Give us a call, we are here to help!
