Meet beautiful the 6month old 🧡 We’ve been working together since she was 8wks old and is coming along really nicely with her training. Yesterday we worked lots on leaving temptations on the floor after her unfortunate 💩 eating incident, and will continue to work with her and her lovely human as she heads into adolescence 🫶🏻

Gorgeous Robbie the x is working hard on excessive barking and over-excitement when he has guests in his home.
He’s a mix of two breeds who are usually pretty vocal, but we’re helping him dilute his barking down, reinforcing what we’d rather he do instead, whilst making sure all his needs are being met🫶🏻

👉🏻During our late evening walk, a man approached and asked if he could greet Banjo.
I responded that it was up to Banjo to decide. Banjo made it clear by staying close to me that he wasn’t interested in interacting with the man.
The man was disappointed (being a Lurcher enthusiast), and we moved on.

It got me thinking that I was feeling a little disappointed in Banjo too! But why?

I think a part of it, is that Byron was so outgoing and loved meeting new people, but the main reason was that I was (without really realising), placing some very unrealistic expectations onto Banjo!.

Expecting Banjo to be social with everyone, like Byron was, is unrealistic and unfair. Dogs, like humans, have preferences and boundaries. It’s perfectly normal for a dog not to want to greet every person. Reasons could be anything from feeling uneasy, feeling unsafe in the environment, past negative experiences, genetics, or simply being more introverted and content with keeping to themselves – and that’s completely OK.

While we can work on boosting their confidence in social situations with training, it’s important to respect their pace and preferences, and to let go of these unfair expectations we can sometimes place onto our dogs! 🐶

💡 Did you know?

👉🏻Under the Road Traffic Act 1988 it is a criminal offence for a dog to be on a ‘designated road’ without being held on a lead.

👉🏻You may have seen “well-behaved” dogs walking at the side of roads without a lead, or even crossing busy roads while walking at the side of their owners. To the bystander, it might appear as if the situation is under control. The onlooker might even be impressed and wish they could train their dog to walk on a roadside lead-free, in the same way.

👉🏻But in the eyes of the law, that’s an offence, and could land you with a criminal record and a big fine.

👉🏻It only takes a momentary lapse in concentration from the dog or human for something awful to happen- it’s not worth it at all!

👉🏻It’s hard enough to walk a “reactive” or anxious dog on the street without the fear of an off-lead dog approaching and setting back your training etc.

👉🏻Many of my clients, my friends and I myself have had experiences of being approached by off-lead dogs while ours are on-lead on the pavements and I wonder if people don’t care, or just genuinely don’t know about the ramifications it can have for the on-lead dog? 🤔

✨ Advocating for your dog! ✨

Here is my handsome client (rescue) showing us how to advocate for our dogs with big feelings 👏🏻

Niko is learning that people are safe and that not every dog wants to say hello to him (which he is smashing by the way!)

But this is a fantastic way to advocate for your dog when out in public.
A lot of the time it can feel socially akward to ask a strange person to give your dog and you space, but something like this vest can communicate the message nice and clearly. It can alert other people to your dog’s dislike of being crowded, making it easier to act appropriately and if necessary modify their actions around you both.

Meet Danny the 😃We have been working together on reactive behaviour when seeing children on lead on his walks. It doesn’t happen all the time but the unpredictability felt difficult to manage. Handsome man, Jumby the is driven to have his down almost constantly when outside the house.
This is fine to an extent, but it meant he had no engagement with his mum whatsoever and therefore absolutely 0 recall.
We’ve been working on small achievable steps to help build in engagement with his mum and he’s doing so well! Proud of you Jumby!😍

As most of you know, since Byron died, Banjo’s tolerance to being alone in the house has plummeted. Thanks to the Furbo we realised he started howling at around the 90min mark. Previously he was very content being “alone” with Byron for 4hours plus so this was absolutely heartbreaking to see and it’s just one of the ways his grief is manifesting itself. He just didn’t ever learn to be alone away from Byron for longer than 90mins or so. We have got to work to help build his confidence here and he’s doing absolutely amazing so far. We can now leave him for around 4 hours without any distress which is perfect. - After we found out his threshold was about 90mins we decided to work on this most days with him. - Firstly we pledged to not leave him alone for longer than 90mins as this is where he would become stressed and howl! -We have been doing (every other day) absences where we ping pong between easy durations, very quick ones and slightly harder longer ones just past the 90min mark, ie 91mins. - We recorded what durations we had managed on a spreadsheet so we could track our progress. - We were able to build this pretty fast and I’m so proud of him ❤️ . . . .

☀️ If we’re too hot, we can become irritable and grumpy and the same goes for our dogs. A chin rest is such a lovely and versatile thing to teach your dog, I’m mainly building this up with Banjo in preparation for his vaccinations as part of his cooperative care, but it can also lower arousal and be useful in grooming too. ✨ Stage one of teaching “drop it” with a toy and food lure. I’ll do a video on stage 2; fading the lure and phase 3; fading the hand signal too ✌🏻 I find some dogs go into their “food brain” with this and won’t go back to playing, so it’s tricky to get enough reps in, so i’ll also do a video on how to train this without a food lure too. There are sooo many reasons why a dog might stall on lead. We want to work out the WHY first. - A vet check is a good place to start, to ensure there is no pain present, making it uncomfortable to walk. - With rescues and puppies it can often be due to feeling unsafe and being scared of loud traffic noises and seeing cars, lots of people, children etc. Here we’d want to gently build confidence. - Recently I’ve seen a lot of dogs who have learnt to stop because their guardian will then reach for the food/treat pouch in a bid to get them moving again. The dog has learnt STOP- HUMAN REACHES FOR FOOD - I EAT IT - STOP AGAIN. Here we’d want to really analyse at which point we are reaching for treats! Dogs are super observant and so making sure we reach for treats and then delivering the food only when the dog is moving and in forward movement is key to changing this behaviour chain! Anyway, just a few things to think about for this conundrum. There is always a reason, and it’s not because they are being stubborn! Hope it helps! ✨Just a reminder that things with wheels can be scary for your puppy or older dog too!✨ -Wheely suitcases -Wheely bins -Scooters -Bikes -Traffic -Pushchairs -Rollerskates -Skateboards -Anything with wheels! I find them a really common trigger for many dogs, so make sure to pair seeing them with good things! Treats, toy-play and praise. This will help your dog feel good about them. ✨ Banjo really enjoys lots of high energy activities on his walks, things like playing frisbee, playing tuggy, running like a lunatic, etc, especially at the start when he’s all fizzy and in big wide open spaces. This is all well and good but we always make sure we balance this out with LOADS of sniffing and environmental exploration, ideally in nature. He’s actually amazing at regulating this himself. If Banjo only did these big adrenaline fulled activities, he would probably be physically tired, but mentally WIRED! By encouraging him to sniff and explore the environment with his nose, he gets a happy balance and is truly ready to rest when we get home. If I wanted to give him some good exercise before I was leaving him for a period of time (for example) I wouldn’t do any high energy activities but I’d encourage him to find his toy with his nose or just take him out for a stroll doing lots of cued “find its”. Remember sniffing is golden and 15/20mins can equal about an hour of walking in terms of the energy it expends! This display of body language is very apt for me at the moment as I’m focusing on consensual teeth brushing & nail clipping with my dogs. The bared teeth, wide eyes and lip licks are all in a bid to communicate that they are uncomfortable with this procedure. If we continue to ignore these signs, the dog can learn that it’s hopeless and resort to biting to get their point across instead. Ideally you’d want to take time training your dog using desensitisation and counter conditioning to help create positive associations, where the dog is opting in or out! If your dog is baring their teeth like this, give them space and let them know you’re listening to them! . . .

I got to see Alfie the #labradoodle pupper the other day and we focused on getting him comfortable with his crate, with the aim of slowly building up to being left for short stints. Before the session he wouldn’t even go near it! By the end of the session, he didn’t want to come out 😂 The power of positive associations and chicken 🐔!
