Today is National Pet Obesity Awareness Day — a perfect reminder of how crucial it is to keep our senior pets at a healthy weight! Did you know that 56% of dogs and 60% of cats in the U.S. were estimated to be overweight or obese, according to the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention? And just like with people, obesity in pets can lead to serious health issues, from joint pain to diabetes and even a shorter lifespan.

Here are some easy weight-loss tips for senior pets:
• Follow portion guidelines and schedule mealtimes – Check the feeding recommendations on your pet’s food packaging or consult your vet to ensure you're giving the right amount, and stick to regular mealtimes to help control their weight.

• Watch those extra calories from treats – It’s easy to go overboard with snacks, so be mindful of treat quantities.

• Consult your vet for a diet recommendation – Your vet can suggest foods tailored to your senior pet's needs.

• Try food puzzles – Make mealtime fun and engaging while helping your pet eat slower.

• Daily exercise – Regular activity is key to maintaining a healthy weight.

Happy National Walk Your Dog Week! 🐾 For our senior pups, walks are still a great way to stay active, but it's important to make a few adjustments to keep them comfortable. Shorter walks, on-leash, and sticking to smooth terrain can make a big difference. Opt for cooler times of the day to prevent heat exhaustion, and use a high-quality harness to avoid putting pressure on their throat. Don’t forget to bring water for hydration and a portable fan if needed to keep them comfortable.
