…And they’re off! ✈️ 🐾

Wishing our northern veterinary team (postponed from the fall due to wildfires) a safe journey as they visit multiple communities throughout Nunavut and NWT during their remote clinic visits. First up is Gjoa Haven, NU followed by Taloyoak, NU. Our team, comprised of VWB/VSF staff and volunteer veterinarians and veterinary technicians, is looking forward to making return trips to both communities where they will connect with local residents and animals, and maybe even get to see the northern lights! ❄️💫

We rely on Aeroplan points to fly our vets and volunteers into places like remote areas of northern Canada, where the nearest vets are often a plane ride away. If you can spare any points, they will go a long way in helping our vet teams get to where they're needed most!

Arctic Wolf – Canis lupus arctos

No other wolf in the world can offer the same coloring as the Arctic Wolf. It is very unique due to the location where it is found. While some species of wolves do have some white coloring, this one is almost completely white. They do offer some aspects of yellow, gray, and black in places though.

The overall size of them will depend on where they happen to live in their region. Some of them only weight about 75 pounds. Others though can weigh up to 125. Some of them are about 3 feet in length when they are fully grown. Others are twice that long though at about 6 feet.

Due to the extreme cold where the Arctic Wolf lives, they have two thick layers of fur. The outer layer actually gets thicker as the winter months come along. They first layer helps to form a waterproof barrier for the skin. As a result their body temperature can stay warm enough even when it is bitter cold.

These wolves also have smaller ears than other species. That is part of them staying warm as well. They also help them to regular their overall body temperature. Since the ground is permanently frozen they have padded paws that are designed to offer them a good grip when they walk.

The Arctic wolf or polar wolf has a morphology particularly adapted to extreme cold. In the polar regions where it lives (North America), its thick white fur allows it to be camouflaged and to keep its heat. It is lined with an undercoat of woolly hair made waterproof by naturally secreted sebum.

The Arctic wolf is shorter on legs than the gray wolf. Its muzzle is smaller and rounder, and its ears shorter and rounded. These attributes help it limit its exposure to polar winds.

Snow Adaption...

Amur tigers live in a harsh environment, where extremely cold temperatures and deep snow are common. Their body is well-adapted to the cold climate. Take their large size, for instance. A big animal conserves heat better than a small one, so it's no surprise that Amur tigers are larger than other tiger subspecies, which live in warmer areas.

Besides being big, Amur tigers have other "built-in" ways to conquer the cold. They have a layer of fat (on their flanks and belly) that helps protect them from the elements. Their coats help, too: their fur is thick and long (especially during the cold winter months). And like most tigers, Amur tigers have a ruff of fur around their neck. This "scarf" is more developed in Amur tigers than in any other subspecies. Finally, these cats have built-in "snow boots" -- extra fur on the paws to protect them from the cold snow.

Like all tigers, their coat is golden-orange with dark stripes. They also have some patches of white on their belly, chest, throat, and muzzle. Compared with other kinds of tigers, Amur tigers have more white in their coat and fewer stripes.

Thanks for reading, see you on the next upload 👍
