Can the Wrong Food Make Your Dog Forgetful?

Your dog’s diet affects more than their tummy—it affects their brain! 🧠✨

📊 Did you know? The U.S. has approximately 89.7 million pet dogs, and an estimated 9 to 13.5 million of them suffer from food sensitivities.

🚨 How Food Sensitivities Impact Your Dog’s Brain:
🔹 Forgetfulness & Confusion – Inflammation in the gut can interfere with neurotransmitters like serotonin and dopamine, affecting memory and learning.
🔹 Slow Response Time – Poor nutrient absorption can lead to brain fog, making training and recall less effective.
🔹 Anxiety & Nervousness – A disrupted gut microbiome can increase cortisol (the stress hormone), making dogs more reactive and less focused.

💡 Why This Matters:
The gut and brain are deeply connected through the gut-brain axis—an imbalance in the gut microbiome from food sensitivities can lead to cognitive decline, difficulty learning new commands, and increased stress levels.

🥦 The Right Nutrition = A Sharper, Happier Dog!
Addressing food sensitivities can help your pup stay focused, engaged, and eager to learn. Want to support their cognitive function with the best nutrition? Let’s talk! 🐾✨

Since March is Pet Owners Education Month, I thought this would be the perfect time to share some helpful tips to keep your dog happy and healthy.

We've already talked about the importance of what you feed your dog and how giving them a sense of purpose can make a world of difference in their well-being.

But now, let’s dive into something that’s often overlooked—your dog's health issues, particularly those that can make them feel uncomfortable or even miserable.

If your dog is dealing with itchy skin, sore paws, or tummy troubles, you’re not alone. These are actually the top reasons why dogs end up at the vet.

You might be surprised to hear that food is often at the root of these problems. Many pet owners immediately think food “allergies” when their dogs experience these symptoms, but the reality is that most dogs don’t have true allergies. Instead, they have food sensitivities or intolerances.

The difference between allergies and sensitivities is important to understand. A true food allergy is an immune system response, where the body attacks the food protein as if it were harmful, often causing symptoms. True allergies go away once the trigger has been removed.

Food sensitivities, on the other hand occur when your dog’s digestive system has trouble processing certain ingredients, leading to issues like itching, upset stomach, or gas, diarrhea, ear and a**l infections. unlike allergies, sensitivities can take several weeks after exposure to the trigger. Almost 27 million dogs suffer from food sensitivity

This week we will dive into what you can do to help relieve your dogs symptoms.

🐶💕 Is Love Enough—Dogs Need Balance! 💕🐶

We all LOVE our dogs. We cuddle them, spoil them, and tell them they’re the best thing that ever happened to us. (Because, let’s be real, they are. 🥹) But here’s the truth: love alone isn’t enough for a happy, well-adjusted dog.

Imagine if someone loved you dearly but never fed you well, never gave you fresh air, or never helped you manage stress. You’d struggle, right? Dogs are the same!

✅ Nutrition matters. Love won’t fix tummy troubles, itchy skin, or food sensitivities. A balanced, nourishing diet does!

✅ Mental stimulation is key. A dog who loves you but is bored out of their mind? That’s a recipe for chewed-up shoes. 🫣

✅ Training = Confidence. A well-trained dog isn’t just “obedient”—they’re calm, secure, and less stressed. Love alone won’t teach them how to navigate the world with confidence.

✅ Emotional well-being. Energy balancing, exercise, and routine help dogs feel safe and stable. They need structure as much as they need belly rubs!

So yes, love your dog with all your heart. But also feed them right, train them, engage them, and balance their lives—because a truly happy dog needs more than just love. 🐾💖

What’s one thing you do (besides love) to keep your pup’s life balanced? Drop it in the comments! ⬇️✨

Beyond Dog Training: The Key to a Balanced and Stress-Free Life

Dog training alone isn’t enough. A truly balanced dog needs mental, emotional, and physical fulfillment to reduce stress, anxiety, and unwanted behaviors. When one of these areas is out of sync, issues like excessive barking, reactivity, and restlessness can arise.
The Four Pillars of Life Balance for Dogs

✅ Proper Nutrition: Fueling Behavior & Emotional Stability
The right diet plays a major role in a dog’s stress levels and behavior. Food sensitivities, poor nutrition, and gut imbalances can contribute to anxiety, hyperactivity, or even aggression. A balanced diet tailored to your dog’s needs helps regulate emotions, promotes calmness, and supports overall well-being.

✅ Training with Purpose: Reducing Stress Through Engagement
Training should be more than just obedience—it should give your dog a sense of purpose. When dogs don’t have a job to do, they often become anxious or destructive. Activities like scent work, problem-solving exercises, or structured play provide mental stimulation, prevent frustration, and create calm, confident behavior.

✅ Adventure & Exploration: Relieving Anxiety Through New Experiences
Dogs thrive on adventure. A lack of variety can lead to boredom, stress, and unwanted behaviors. Taking your dog on regular outings, hikes, or exploring new environments provides excitement, builds confidence, and helps them release pent-up energy in a healthy way—leading to a more balanced, relaxed dog.

✅ Building Strong Relationships: Strengthening Trust & Emotional Security
A dog’s relationship with their owner is the foundation of their emotional well-being. Dogs that feel disconnected from their humans often experience anxiety and stress-based behaviors. Strengthening your bond through positive training, interactive play, and calm leadership creates a sense of security, reducing stress and promoting balanced behavior.
Is Your Dog Living a Balanced Life?

If your dog struggles with anxiety, stress, or behavioral challenges, the solution isn’t just more training—it’s addressing their full well-being. A holistic approach that includes nutrition, purposeful activities, adventure, and relationship-building can transform your dog’s life.

One of the things I truly love about working with puppies is watching them grow from that early stage. It's incredible to be part of shaping them into strong, well-balanced, creative, and well-behaved dogs who leave a lasting impression on everyone they meet.

The puppy stage is full of excitement, but also requires patience. It's about guiding them, step by step, through their learning process. When it all comes together, there’s nothing more rewarding than knowing you played a role in their development.

That feeling of being part of something so meaningful Not only for the puppy but for the family that stays with you forever.

Create Life Balance for Your Dog: Adventure Awaits! 🐾

Just like us, dogs thrive when they have a healthy balance of physical, mental, and emotional stimulation! Creating a well-rounded lifestyle for your pup isn’t just about fun—it has powerful benefits that can transform their behavior and well-being. 🌟

Incorporating outdoor adventures like hikes, sniff parks, and even attending kids' baseball games is a fantastic way to keep your dog mentally and physically engaged. 🌳⚾ When your dog gets out of their normal routine and experiences new environments, they gain confidence, which can help relieve stress and anxiety. Instead of resorting to destructive behaviors out of boredom, they’ll have healthier outlets for their energy and emotions. 💪🐕

Including your dog in family activities like BBQs or setting up a DIY agility course not only boosts their bond with you but also keeps their mind sharp and focused. 🏕️✨ A backyard camping trip or a game of fetch will allow them to burn off excess energy in a positive way, reducing anxious behaviors and fostering a stronger, happier relationship with you.

When dogs have the right balance of adventure, training, and downtime, it improves their overall emotional health. No more nervous barking, chewing, or excessive digging—just a calm, balanced dog who feels loved, safe, and mentally stimulated. 🌸🐕‍🦺

Give your dog the adventure and attention they need to thrive! From fun outdoor activities to cozy family moments, creating a life balance for your dog is the key to a happier, healthier pup.

Creating Purpose & Life Balance for Your Dog: A Path to Mental Stimulation and Well-being
Dogs thrive when they have a sense of purpose. Teaching your dog basic commands and controlling their behavior is important, but what if you could offer them something more? By introducing Target Training, you can give your dog more meaningful tasks that challenge them mentally, keep boredom at bay, and help improve their overall behavior. 🌟

Here's how to get started:
1. What is Target Training?
Target training involves teaching your dog to interact with a specific object (like your hand, a stick, or any other object). Once they learn the concept of touching or interacting with the target, you can apply it to a variety of tasks, creating purpose in their life.

2. Getting Started with Target Training
Step 1: Introduce the Target
Start by presenting the target to your dog and encourage them to touch it with their nose or paw. Reward them when they make contact.

Step 2: Reinforce the Behavior
Repeat the process until your dog consistently touches the target. Add a verbal cue like “Touch” to associate the action with a command.

3. Teaching Household Tasks with Target Training
Once your dog is familiar with target training, you can apply it to practical tasks: Turning Lights On/Off: Place the target on a light switch and guide your dog to touch it. Reward them when they succeed!
Closing Cabinet Doors: Attach the target to the edge of the cabinet and encourage your dog to touch it to close the door.
And More: Get creative! Teach your dog to open the fridge, fetch items, or push buttons—anything that gives them a job to do.

4. Why It Matters
Mental Stimulation: These tasks provide your dog with mental exercise, reducing boredom and destructive behaviors.

A Sense of Purpose: Giving your dog meaningful tasks helps them feel balanced, reducing anxiety and stress.

Improved Behavior: Purposeful activities can lead to better overall behavior and a more harmonious household.

By giving your dog something to do with Target Training, you’re not just teaching them new tricks—you’re enriching their life with purpose and balance. 🐾

Ready to start? Let’s create a happy, well-balanced life for your dog!

**Giving Your Dog Purpose**

As pet parents, we often focus on basic commands and daily routines like walks, but have you ever thought about giving your dog a true sense of purpose? 💡

Dogs thrive when they have tasks that challenge them and help them feel like they’re contributing. Instead of just “sit” or “stay,” try teaching them functional tasks that benefit your home, like turning on and off light switches or closing cabinet doors. These tasks give your dog a real sense of accomplishment.

Another powerful way to give your dog purpose is by teaching them to communicate with you! By introducing talk buttons, your dog can have a voice, expressing their needs, wants, and emotions. 🐾

A dog with purpose isn’t just well-behaved; they’re engaged, happy, and have a stronger bond with you. Let’s give our dogs the chance to live their best lives!

March is Pet Owner Education Month! 🐾📚

This month, my focus is on providing credible resources to help pet owners make informed decisions about their dogs' health and well-being. Let’s recap some essential insights we've covered so far:

📌 Susan Thixton & "Pet Fooled" – A great starting point for understanding what goes into your dog’s food and why it matters. The food you choose directly affects your dog's health—both now and as they age. Nutrition plays a significant role in disease prevention and overall wellness.

📌 Dog Food Advisor (DFA) – I rely on this resource to stay updated on pet food recalls. Thousands of pets have fallen ill—or worse—due to unsafe food and treats. DFA acts as a watchdog, helping pet owners make safer choices.

📌 Dr. Jean Dodds & "Nutrigenomics" – This book dives into how food influences gene expression and the development of disease. What we put into our dogs' bodies doesn’t just impact them today—it can shape their long-term health.

🚨 A Word of Caution About Online Advice 🚨
Social media can be a great place to seek guidance, but it's also full of misinformation. Thousands of groups spread harmful or misleading advice. Always vet your sources and rely on science-backed research when making decisions for your pet.

Education is power—especially when it comes to our dogs' health. Stay tuned for more insights throughout Pet Owner Education Month! 🐶💡

For the month of March which is pet own er's education month. Today I want to share with you one of my favorite books.

Canine Nutrigenomics: The New Science of Feeding Your Dog for Optimum Health by Dr. Jean Dodds, DVM, explores the science of how nutrition affects a dog’s genes, influencing overall health, disease prevention, and longevity. The book introduces the concept of nutrigenomics—how specific foods can turn genes on or off, impacting immune function, inflammation, and metabolism.

When it comes to mental health, the book highlights the profound connection between diet and brain function. Nutrigenomics plays a crucial role in neurotransmitter balance, stress resilience, and emotional stability. Key points include:

Gut-Brain Axis: A balanced gut microbiome, influenced by diet, affects mood and behavior. Inflammation and dysbiosis (gut imbalance) can lead to anxiety and reactivity.
Amino Acids & Neurotransmitters: Foods rich in amino acids like tryptophan support serotonin production, promoting calmness and reducing aggression.

Oxidative Stress & Inflammation: Antioxidant-rich diets help reduce oxidative stress, which can contribute to cognitive decline and anxiety.

Food Sensitivities & Behavior: Undiagnosed food intolerances can cause chronic inflammation, affecting mood, focus, and energy levels.

Dr. Dodds emphasizes that proper nutrition is a foundation for both physical and emotional well-being, making diet a crucial component of behavior and mental health management in dogs.

At Dogs 4 Life Training and Wellness, we align closely with Dr. Jean Dodds' research on food sensitivities and behavior—a key concept in Canine Nutrigenomics. Dr. Dodds emphasizes that undiagnosed food sensitivities lead to chronic inflammation, which can manifest as restlessness, anxiety, irritability, and difficulty focusing. These behavioral issues are often mistaken for training problems when, in reality, they stem from what the dog is eating.

This is exactly why Dogs 4 Life integrates pet food sensitivity testing into our approach. We don’t just focus on training—we address the root cause of behavioral and health challenges by identifying food triggers

As a responsible pet parent, you go the extra mile to ensure your dog gets the best nutrition possible. But even the most well-intentioned choices can be risky if a food or treat recall occurs. Contaminants, mislabeling, and harmful ingredients can make their way into pet food, posing serious health risks. Staying informed about pet food and treat recalls isn't just about peace of mind—it could save your dog’s life.

I have attached a Link below, sign up and get notified upon recalls

Why Recalls Happen

Pet food recalls occur for several reasons, including:
🔹 Contamination – Bacteria like Salmonella, Listeria, or mold toxins can make dogs sick.
🔹 Foreign Objects – Plastic, metal, or bone fragments sometimes end up in food.
🔹 Nutritional Imbalances – Excess or deficient nutrients (like vitamin D or taurine) can lead to serious health problems.
🔹 Undeclared Allergens – Ingredients not listed on the label can trigger allergic reactions.
How to Stay Updated

✔ Check recall lists – Websites like the FDA, AVMA, and pet food watchdog groups regularly post updates.
✔ Follow trusted sources – Brands you trust should have transparent recall policies.
✔ Sign up for alerts – Subscribe to pet food recall notifications to get updates in real time.
✔ Read labels carefully – If your dog has food sensitivities, knowing ingredient sources is key.
What to Do If You Have a Recalled Product

🚨 Stop feeding it immediately.
📌 Check batch numbers and expiration dates against recall notices.
🗑 Safely dispose of or return the product per recall instructions.
🐾 Monitor your dog for signs of illness (vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy) and contact your vet if needed.

By staying informed, you can protect your dog from potentially harmful foods and ensure their meals are as safe and nourishing as possible. A well-educated pet parent is a dog’s best advocate!

As a result of yesterday's post, I’m dedicating the entire month of March to Pet Parents Education Month!

Throughout this month, I’ll be sharing valuable insights from some of the top social media leaders in the pet industry.

My goal is to help dog guardians to become more informed and empowered in raising happy, healthy dog. With the right knowledge, we can make better decisions for our four legged family members by better understanding their needs.

One area that has a major impact on your dog's life is nutrition. Proper nutrition plays a huge role in your dog's overall wellness. What your dog eats affects them physically, mentally, emotionally, and even behaviorally. It influences everything from their mood to their ability to learn and train, shaping their energy levels, focus, and overall temperament. For instance, poor nutrition can lead to irritability, anxiety, or hyperactivity, while a well-balanced diet can promote a calmer, more balanced demeanor. So, nutrition is truly foundational to their health and well-being.

Feel free to contribute you favorites and invite your fellow dog lovers to join in and learn along with us! Let’s make this a month of education, growth, and community.

One of the most impactful movies that gives insight to the dog food industry. I believe this movie can be watched on both prime and Netflix.

An investigative expose of the inner workings inside the commercial pet food industry, which has went largely unchallenged until now.

**The Evolution of Pet Parents: A New Era of Responsibility and Awareness**

As pet ownership continues to evolve, so too does the role of the pet parent. Gone are the days when having a dog simply meant giving them food, shelter, and a bit of exercise. Today, being a responsible pet parent involves so much more—it's about understanding the emotional, physical, and psychological needs of your dog and becoming actively engaged in their well-being.

Being a pet parent today requires a higher level of involvement, education, and awareness. It’s not just about having a well-behaved dog to follow your commands; it's about understanding that dogs, like humans, have complex needs. The more we educate ourselves about their health, emotions, behaviors, and overall care, the more we can offer them a balanced and fulfilling life.

This shift toward deeper engagement comes with the recognition that pets are not accessories or tools for companionship alone; they are living beings with their own personalities, preferences, and needs. From providing the right nutrition to ensuring they get mental stimulation, the responsibility now falls on us to be more proactive in providing for their overall well-being. We need to ask ourselves: *What is best for our dog, not just today, but over the course of their lifetime?*

Balance is key. The role of a pet parent is about finding harmony between work, life, and the time dedicated to your dog. It's about setting up routines that support both your dog’s needs and your own, fostering a relationship of trust and respect.

Educating yourself on things like dog behavior, nutrition, and mental health isn’t just a nice-to-have—it's essential. It not only strengthens your bond with your dog but also helps you provide the most fulfilling life for them possible.

In short, the role of pet parents today is one of education, responsibility, and partnership. It’s about acknowledging that we need to be actively involved in their well-being. Because, at the end of the day, it’s not just about having a dog—it’s about being the best parent to them that we can be.

🌟 Nutritional Yeast vs. Brewer’s Yeast for Dogs 🌟

At Dogs 4 Life Training and Wellness, we know yeast-based supplements can offer powerful health benefits for your dog. But how do you choose between nutritional yeast and brewer’s yeast? Here’s what sets them apart:

✨ Nutritional Yeast: This inactive yeast is a nutrient powerhouse, rich in B vitamins, protein, and antioxidants. It’s perfect for boosting your dog’s energy, supporting skin and coat health, and enhancing their immune system. Plus, its cheesy flavor makes it a great topper for picky eaters.

🍺 Brewer’s Yeast: While also rich in B vitamins, brewer’s yeast is typically a byproduct of beer production and contains additional chromium, which can help regulate blood sugar. It’s also known for its ability to repel fleas naturally, making it a popular choice for dogs in warmer climates.

👉 When to Choose Each

Use nutritional yeast for dogs needing a nutrient boost or those with sensitive stomachs, as it’s gentler and often fortified with more B vitamins.

Opt for brewer’s yeast if your dog needs extra flea protection or support with energy and blood sugar regulation.

💡 Both options are great natural supplements, but they serve slightly different purposes. Always start with small amounts and monitor your dog’s response.

I have the pleasure of working with a wonderful family who has a 5-month-old Sheltie and American Eskimo mix. The family reached out to me after their dog was enrolled in a board-and-train program through another facility. Unfortunately, the trainer returned the dog after only a few days, saying they were unable to work with it.

This is our conversation after our first 2-hour session together. We'll be following up soon.

**🚫 Leash Training Mistake: Thinking It Starts Outside! 🚫**

Nope, nope, nope! If you think leash training begins the moment you step outside—**think again!** 🙅‍♂️🐶

👉 A leash doesn’t just mean “WALK TIME!”—it means **"Hey, we’re working together!"** And that training starts **inside your home.**

🎯 **Step 1: Drag Line Magic**
Before heading outdoors, let your pup wear a lightweight leash (aka **drag line**) around the house. This helps them get used to it **without the leash battle**—no tugging, no resistance, just natural movement.

🎯 **Step 2: Leash = Focus, Not Just Fun**
If your dog thinks the leash = immediate adventure, you’ll struggle with pulling. Instead, teach them that the leash means **listening, following, and teamwork.**

🎯 **Step 3: Short Training Sessions Indoors**
Practice simple cues like **sit, stay, come, and walking by your side** inside first. Fewer distractions = **faster learning!** 🧠

Once your pup **masters the basics indoors,** outside walks become **WAY easier and stress-free.** 🙌
