☠️ What’s wrong with your dog? ⬇️ 😩 Are you worried about your dog’s grass-eating habits? Well you can stop now, because research has shown that our clever pooches do this because the grass they eat has a beneficial effect on them. 🌾 To understand more about this, it’s necessary to watch your dog’s behaviour when eating the grass as this will give you a clue as to why they’re doing it. In general, dogs eat grass in three different ways: 1️⃣ Your dog will slowly and calmly nibble at new grass shoots, sniffing until they find the piece they really want. They will not eat much, usually. They do this when they want extra nutrients and your dog’s instincts and powerful sense of smell enables them to find exactly what they need. 2️⃣ Your dog will gobble up the grass, any grass if it can be easily picked, trying to get volume into their stomachs. You will see very soon that your dog begins to retch and will vomit the grass along with a foamy liquid. This is a sign that your dog is trying to remove something from their stomach, and they are perhaps feeling a bit sicky. It is common behaviour in dogs and not a cause for concern unless your dog is doing this excessively. 3️⃣ Your dog will behave the same way as in (2) above, except this time they do not vomit afterwards. This is because your dog feels that it needs more fibre and the grass provides this and improves the transit of waste through the dog’s digestive system. 🐶 So, in short, unless your dog eats an excessive amount of grass, or vomits regularly, seems out of sorts or off their food, there is no cause for concern when your dog eats grass. They know what they’re doing and it’s best to leave them be. There are, however, many ways to help them cope: ✅ Invest in a pheromone diffuser. These plug into an electric socket and diffuse a ‘pet appeasing hormone’ which is similar to that released by mother dogs or cats to calm her pups or kittens. These diffusers will help comfort your pet and make them feel safe. They do take a while to build up levels of hormone in the environment so if you haven’t got one, you need to get to the shops! And it’s worth noting that they are species specific so if you’ve got dogs & cats that get freaked out then you’ll need a specific diffuser for each. ✅ Walk your dog early, ensuring that they exercise enough to wear them out before darkness falls. Make sure they have time to poop before dark as there’s nothing worse than a dog needing to ‘go’ but being too terrified to step out of the door. ✅ Close windows & doors, and draw blinds & curtains at twilight to keep out the sights & sounds of the festivities. ✅ Be prepared to spend time with your pet if they want that. A dog will feel safer sitting calmly in a room with you than following you around as you do chores etc. ✅ Invest in a ‘stress vest’. This is a tight-fitting garment for dogs that works in the same way as swaddling a baby and will help to comfort your pet. They take time for your pup to get used to, so buy in plenty of time. ✅ Make sure your pet has somewhere where they feel safe or somewhere they can hide. This is particularly important for cats but applies to dogs too. If your pet sleeps in a crate, then cover it with a blanket & add a couple of their favourite Pet Hates toys 😉 so that they feel comforted, or pop their bed under a table so that they feel more secure. ✅ Muffle the noise.
